Each of the three sections of the book explores the theme of 'working the light' - surely the most critical and cha ll en gi ng a sp ect of landscape photography - with Joe Cornish writing about Wild Places, Charlie Waite discussing Inhabited Landscapes and David Ward concentrating on Inner Landscaps. Unpaginated, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Opaque printed mylar dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "This bookwork, produced by Oakville Galleries, represents the third and final version of a photographic work begun two years ago at the Domaine de Kerguehennec in Brittany, France, where it took the form of a work in situ: a 'fonds photographic' that was placed in the drawers of the castle's library to become a permanent installation. The work represents a monument to a fictional woman photographer who lived in the castle sometime in the late 19th century, and who wandered the park - especially the area around the lake - obsessively taking pictures of the landscape. Her mental health slowly deterioriated and eventually she killed herself. Her decline is illustrated in the photographs placed in the drawers in porfolio folders or boxes - ." Kingston McGill - Queen's University Press 1985 0773505938 / 9780773505933 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good- A.A. Chesterfield, photographer.
113 pp, oblong (9 1/4" H x 11" D). B&w photographs. "(P)resents the most significant images from a previously unresearched collection of early twentieth-century photographs. The photographer, A.A. Chesterfield, spent most of his working life as a professional photographer, a field in which he achiev-ed a national reputation. But between 1901 & 1904 he was employed as a fur trader with the Hudson's Bay Company, and his most significant camera work comes from this period. The only white man at the company's northernmost posts (Great Whale River and Fort George), he lived and worked with the Cree and Inuit. The photographs he took during this period are remarkable in their combination of technical skill, visual appeal, and documentary and historical significance. (He) recorded the effects of post life upon the Cree and Inuit, and showed how the white agents of the church and fur trade made use of native implements, clothing, and transportation. Recognizing the threat to native ways of life posed by the white man's advancing civilization, he photographed the native people's dress, their everyday activities, the details that define a culture. The text provides a detailed framework in which to understand the photographs. James describes Chesterfield's life, the region, the people he photo-graphed, the role of the Hudson's Bay Company, the documentary significance of the activities depict-ed in the photographs, and the relationship between these and other extant photos of that region and era." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

33 Kirkland, Wallace. Inscribed. RECOLLECTIONS OF A LIFE PHOTOGRAPHER.
Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1954.
272 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. INSCRIBED ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER "TO ELIZABETH 'LIZ', FROM WALLACE KIRKLAND 'KIRK', KEEP FOLLOWING THE GINGERBREAD - THE HELL WITH THE PENNIES". B&w photographs. "Wallace Kirkland has been a photographer for 'Life Magazine' since it began. One of the editors of that magazine is said to have remarked upon hearing of the book, 'I always said you were the world's worst photographer, and the world's best writer'. This book consists of the stories behind Kirkland's photographic assignments - some of the ones which became famous: The Fox Hunt, The Birth of the Dragonfly, and Jamaican Boyhood: A Memory, and Man of Letters: Arthur Birnstengle, who wrote his congressman for a wife with extra ordinary results, and some of the ones which were never run, such as the Portrait of Gandhi when he got Gandhi's autograph on the tail end of a goat. The range of writing in this book is as wide as the Missouri. Mr. Kirkland goes from some exceptionally beautiful nature writing in the chapter on Turtles to moving remembrances of things and people in Jamaican Boyhood; to rowdy vignettes in the Life of a Wandering Photographer. Through all his adventures we see A Hero of our Time, a Don Quixote with a camera who is doing the work which he likes best." Dust jacket has several tears, small chips, edge wear/creases, light edge browning, two small watermarks on inside of spine, light rubbing. VG-/Fair

THE WOMAN IN FASHION., Moore, Doris Langley.
40 Moore, Doris Langley. THE WOMAN IN FASHION.
London B. T. Batsford 1949 First Edition Hard Cover Good- Fair Felix Fonteyn, photographer.
184 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs, colour fronispiece shows Vanessa Redgrave in pink tafetta dress. "(The author) possesses what is probably the finest private collection of English clothing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and she is also well known as an authority on the history and psychology of dress. (This book) makes use both of her collection and her expert knowledge, and in a particularly delightful way. The dresses have been photographed by Felix Fonteyn, as they were at the time when they were first made: that is, they are shown on living models and in appropriate settings. Set off by such interesting and distinguished women as Vivien Leigh, Ruth Draper, Margot Fonteyn, Moira Shearer, Beatrice Lillie, Googie Withers, Mai Zetterling, and many others well known on the stage, the films, and in similar spheres, the costumes (of c.1800 to 1926) 'come alive' in a way previously unknown either through old fashion plates or in the ordinary histories of costume. (Moore's) text is no less vivid and revealing than her illustrations. She enjoys the great advantage of writing as a woman, with a more than theoretical experience of feminine dress; and she shows herself to be an author of quite exceptional insight, sympathy, and expertise." Light browning to endpapers - small stain on rear pastedown, soft bump to top corner of pages, small bump at top corner of boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, scattered small areas of color fading on front board and on edges of boards, very small liquid stain on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very small stain on inside of each panel, moderate edge wear/wrinkling with some small tears and tiny chips, light fading and moderate wear/wrinkling on spine, light soiling and light liquid mark on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.
