21 Horwood, Harold. Foreword by Farley Mowat. DANCING ON THE SHORE: A CELEBRATION OF LIFE AT ANNAPOLIS BASIN.
Toronto Douglas Gibson / McClelland and Stewart 1987 0771042027 / 9780771042027 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good G. Brender a Brandis.
219 pp, 8 3/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "As (Horwood) describes the land around his home the beauty of his prose is breathtaking, whether he is writing about finches, stars, vegetables, seaweed, beech trees, ponds, garter snakes, or squirrels hiding cookies all over the house. No city-dweller will be able to read this book without a sigh of envy at the life the author and his family have created in 'one of the truly magical places on the earth'. But (it) is much more than just a book about nature described by an expert. For Harold Horwood's detailed observations lead on to a more philosophical plane. The discovery of earthworms knotted to preserve moisture causes him to speculate on DNA and how worms 'remember'. A description of blue herons fencing in a courtship battle, where their razor-sharp bills inflict no damage, leads to the subject of war. These and similar themes are provocative, challenging, and so powerfully written that (his) message has already reduced some audiences to tears." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light rubbing, light wrinkling - mianly at top/bottom of spine a flap-folds.

THE AQUATIC EXPLORERS: A HISTORY OF THE FISHERIES RESEARCH BOARD OF CANADA., Johnstone, Kenneth.
22 Johnstone, Kenneth. THE AQUATIC EXPLORERS: A HISTORY OF THE FISHERIES RESEARCH BOARD OF CANADA.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1977 0802022707 / 9780802022707 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
342 pp, 10 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1898 a group of scientists, working without pay, often under hazardous conditions with only the most primitive equipment, began a systematic study of the fishes of Canada's inland and marine waters. The team operated under the aegis of a board of management which was later to evolve into the Fisheries Research Board, a scientific organization that has placed Candada among the world's leaders in fishery knowledge. This history of the Fisheries Research Board examines the aims and achievements of its research, its attempts to deal with the often conflicting demands of pure and applied science, and its confrontations with a frequently uncomprehending and dissatisfied government. The people who shaped and sustained the organization figure prominently in the account. In-depth taped interviews with senior members and employees, as well as the Annual Reports and other publications of the Department of Fisheries, have enabled (the author) to produce a rich history of a remarkable scientific organization." Very light wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners.

"Recounts a journey that began three-quarters of a century ago in a small village inn nestled in the Laurentian Hills of Quebec. One day, the journey will end at the village cemetery, just one kilometre from the inn. The traveller is the author. The trip is not long, but is rich in rural and natural experiences along the way. Gerard Kenney takes us along the route that led him to build a lone log cabin on the small and inaccessible Lake of the Old Uncles. No roads reach the pond, only a footpath. The hours spent in the quietude of the forest cabin have resulted in the author's personal philosophy, which was inspired by his hero, Henry David Thoreau. (He) shares with his readers the evolution of his philosophy through his personal experiences with the people and the wilderness flora and fauna he has encountered on his life's journey." SIXTEEN YEARS IN THE INDIAN COUNTRY: THE JOURNAL OF DANIEL WILLIAMS HARMON, 1800-1816., Lamb, W. Kaye, editor. (Daniel Williams Harmon.)
29 Lamb, W. Kaye, editor. (Daniel Williams Harmon.) SIXTEEN YEARS IN THE INDIAN COUNTRY: THE JOURNAL OF DANIEL WILLIAMS HARMON, 1800-1816.
Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1957 Hard Cover Good+ Good- Maps by C.C.J. Bond.
277 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers, frontispiece, maps. "The Journal of Daniel Williams Harmon is one of the great basic documents of the fur trade and of Canadian exploration. In early corrupt versions it was printed several times but of recent years has become increasingly difficult to obtain. Here for the first time is the authentic text meticulously edited by a foremost authority on Canadiana. The journal begins on April 29, 1800, when Harmon shortly after his twenty-first birthday, 'under an engagement to the North West Coy.' left Lachine for the West in one of thirty canoes, all heavily laden with supplies and bound for the Company's central rendezvous and depot at Grand Portage on Lake Superior It ends on August 18, 1819, at Fort William with the entry: 'I have at length arrived at head quarters. In coming from New Caledonia to this place, which is a distance of at least three thousand miles, nothing uncommon has occurred. A few days hence, I shall leave this place to proceed to Canada. As I have already described the country between this, and Montreal, I shall here conclude my Journal.' Between these two entries are the observations of a man with a sharp and sympathetic eye and a gift for succinct description. His journal is a lively, often exciting, always informative, record of life in the wilderness." Previous owner's name, small fore-edge stain - migrates into first few pages, very light dust soiling on top of text block, light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light bumping to corners, tiny bump to top edge of front board. 30 Macleish, William H. OIL AND WATER: THE STRUGGLE FOR GEORGES BANK.
Boston Atlantic Monthly Press 1985 0871130076 / 9780871130075 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
304 pp, 8 1/2" H. "Georges Bank, 20,000 square miles of turbulent shoal water off Nantucket, is one of the richest fishing grounds in the world, its depths populated by cod, haddock, flatfish, and scallops. Until recently it was a gathering place for immense fishing trawlers of all nations. Then the Bank also became a bone of contention for explorers in oil, pitting the great multinational companies against one another, to say nothing of federal and state governments, jostling for their share of offshore oil revenues. Georges has long been the subject of dispute between the United States and Canada, and in the fall of 1984 the International Court of Justice in the Hague awarded a large portion of the Bank to Canada. Oil-lease sales were scheduled - and cancelled. Fishermen protested to their political representatives, who protested to their governments. Over the storm-lashed and fecund waters of Georges Bank, William MacLeish has travelled many times - by trawler, by helicopter, by scientific research vessel, by airplane, and by scallop boat. His pages bring us the scientists, the fishing people, politicians, lawyers, and oilmen connected with Georges Bank." Book is slightly cocked, has minor soiling on top of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - bump at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few small light scuff marks, light soiling/rubbing on rear panel.

Unpaginated, oblong (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D). 113 colour photographs, plus three maps. "Beside the Columbia Icefield, in Banff National Park, lies a narrow valley. One end of the valley is a barren arctic waste, newly formed by the retreat of the ice ages. Gradually, it grades into an alpine meadow and then into a northern coniferous forest. The valley and the glaciers around it gell the story of how the landscapes of Canada were formed, from the great ice ages to this summer's flowers. Partway down the valley there is a cave mouth, the sole entrance to an enormous complex of vaults and passage-ways under the valley and glacier. In the cold darkness of the Castleguard caves water has been forming and enlarging passages for hundreds of thousands of years. Glistening white stalactites, among the purest in the world, have been growing for millennia. Come celebrate Castleguard with the adventurers who have explored and photographed the austere beauty of this land shaped by water, cold and time." THE GREAT FUR LAND OR SKETCHES FROM LIFE IN THE HUDSON'S BAY TERRITORY., Robinson, H.M.
39 Robinson, H.M. THE GREAT FUR LAND OR SKETCHES FROM LIFE IN THE HUDSON'S BAY TERRITORY.
Toronto Coles 1975 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Fine Very Good- Charles Gasche.
348 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w illustrations. A facsimile of the edition published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1879. "In approximately 1870, one H.M. Robinson, writer and traveller, journeyed by dog sled to the Hudson's Bay Territory. The account of his months there is fascinating not only for its first-hand look at life in northern Canada, but also for this cultured man's view of it. The book includes excursions by dog sled and canoe, as well as hunting expeditions. It documents life in a Hudson's Bay Company fort, in a fur-hunters' camp, and in an Indian settlement. There are absorbing accounts of voyageurs, the Blackfeet Indians, 'nomadic' hunters, and medicine men, as well as breath-taking descriptions of the landscape. Since little knowledge of the North was generally available, Mr. Robinson's commentary helped to shape the attitudes of early Canadians, thus eventually influencing government policy. Through this book, modern readers can achieve a more complete idea of what it was like to be alive in the North in the 1870's. But more than that, we are able to trace the roots of the nation's successes and failures in dealing with people and the natural resources of the vast expanse once known as the Hudson's Bay Territory." Dust jacket has light wdge wear/wrinkling, two taped (inside) edge tears - one with creases, minor rubbing and soiling.
