A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES., Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan.
21 Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan. A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES.
Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Soft Cover Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Interior - crease at bottom corner of page leaf 89/90, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.

THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE., Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.)
26 Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.) THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1993 0802074618 / 9780802074614 First Paperback Edition. Soft Cover Very Good+
275 pp, 8vo (9" H). "Anne Shirley is the best known of a memorable group of heroines created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a group that includes Emily Byrd Starr, Valancy Stirling, and Pat Gardiner. These characters are at the centre of Epperly's book, the first full-length critical study of all L.M. Montgomery's fiction. Epperly contends that Montgomery was a master of the romance genre, and through her use of literary allusions, repetitions, irony, and comic inversions she deftly manipulated the normal conventions of romance novels. By studying the fictional biographies of the heroines and their pursuit of romance, Epperly question the ways romance shapes what we consider valuable in our imaginings and experience. A book written for L.M. Montgomery fans and scholars." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, clean and bright.

Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1979 0773503218 / 9780773503212 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
246 pp, 9 3/8" H. Dark blue boards with lighter blue and white lettering on spine and front board - no dust jacket (as issued). Map. "(T)he first full account of a major social and political movement of the interwar years in Canada: the campaign for 'Maritime Rights' which erupted in the Atlantic provinces after World War I. (T)races the history of the movement from its origins in the decline in relative status and influence of the Maritimes that accompanied the rise of the West and the growing dominance of the Central Canadian metropolises. Maritimers saw their political influence reduced, the underpinnings of their economy - especially in the critical areas of tariffs, freight rates, and subsidies - whittled away, and Canada defined in terms that seemed to exclude them. Adopting a strategy characteristic of the progressive movements of the period, they attempted through organization and agitation to restore their position. Farmers, fishermen, manufacturers, and organized labour articulated their demands, through the provincial press, boards of trade, union locals, educational conferences, and mass delegations to Ottawa. Although their efforts were largely defeated by the conflicting interests of stronger regions, and by the King government's adroitness in defusing protest through a policy of study and delay, the author believes that the aroused Maritimers had succeeded in establishing their difficulties in the public's mind as a national problem." Light edge wear, tear at top of last index page archivally taped, light wrinkling on page leaf 123/124.

177 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w drawings by Gerard Williams, plus b&w photographs, maps. "(B)orn on April 30, 1906, (Ernest Hartling) grew up in his grandparents' house, overlooking Spanish Ship Bay, Nova Scotia. Entranced by the sight of the billowing white sails of Grandfather's schooner, he embarked on a lifelong fascination with ships and the sea. As a small boy, when he was allowed to steer his father's ship, he knew he was born to be a sailor. In this book, (he) takes us on a voyage through a life crammed with adventure, colour, and excitement: his eyewitness account of the Great Halifax Explosion; crossing the Atlantic at the age of twelve as an ordinary seaman; striking out alone at fourteen in pursuit of his dream of a seafaring life; but that is just the beginning. He sailed the high seas on numerous ships to countless ports and, while still very young, became master of a ship. In Halifax, during the Second World War, Ernest took on the dangerous job of harbour pilot, guiding convoys safely out to sea. Relishing the challenge, he remained a pilot for twenty-nine years. Illuminating every page is the character of Ernest Hartling, who retired after more than fifty years at sea, only to return to it as master of the 'Bluenose II' - the crowning achievement of his life." 39 Horwood, Harold. Foreword by Farley Mowat. DANCING ON THE SHORE: A CELEBRATION OF LIFE AT ANNAPOLIS BASIN.
Toronto Douglas Gibson / McClelland and Stewart 1987 0771042027 / 9780771042027 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good G. Brender a Brandis.
219 pp, 8 3/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "As (Horwood) describes the land around his home the beauty of his prose is breathtaking, whether he is writing about finches, stars, vegetables, seaweed, beech trees, ponds, garter snakes, or squirrels hiding cookies all over the house. No city-dweller will be able to read this book without a sigh of envy at the life the author and his family have created in 'one of the truly magical places on the earth'. But (it) is much more than just a book about nature described by an expert. For Harold Horwood's detailed observations lead on to a more philosophical plane. The discovery of earthworms knotted to preserve moisture causes him to speculate on DNA and how worms 'remember'. A description of blue herons fencing in a courtship battle, where their razor-sharp bills inflict no damage, leads to the subject of war. These and similar themes are provocative, challenging, and so powerfully written that (his) message has already reduced some audiences to tears." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light rubbing, light wrinkling - mianly at top/bottom of spine a flap-folds.
