Oxford Oxford University Press 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
809 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This is an enumerative bibliography classified under some 500 headings. It embraces all aspects of University and College life and institutions and comprises more than 10,000 entries. The compilers are both members of the staff of the Bodleian and they have systematically explored its vast resources as well as taking account of other likely repositories of Oxford material. In addition to books, the Bibliography includes articles from a large number of periodicals and records a mass of eighteenth and nineteenth century ephemeral literature which reflects University policy and politics, and which is probably unknown and unavailable outside the Bodleian." 22 Crane, Walter. OF THE DECORATIVE ILLUSTRATION OF BOOKS OLD AND NEW.
London Bracken 1984 0946495416 / 9780946495412 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
243 pp, 8vo (8" H). B&w illustrations. "Originally published in 1896, this survey of book illustration is both a comprehensive guide to many facets of early work in the field and important evidence of Victorian taste and the influences which shaped it. Walter Crane, as a leading designer and illustrator, was exceptionally well placed to survey the subject - indeed, some of the finest pieces among over 100 drawings reproduced here are those by Crane himself. Crane begins by describing the artist's role in producing manuscripts and early printed books up to the end of the sixteenth century, giving an account of Italian, French and (particularly) German work. He then moves to the beginning of 'modern illustration', which he dates from the work of Blake, and takes in most of the major Victorian exponents of the art, with examples from such men as Rossetti, Selwyn Image, Arthur Hughes, Laurence Housman, Howard Pyle and Will H. Bradley. The result is a book which has delighted the collector for many years, and is now in increasing demand among art historians and typographers." Faint erased pencil mark on front free endpaper, light browning in margins of pages and to edges of text block, light wrinkling at fore-edge of pages 32 to 44 with two very small tears on fore-edge of pages 37 to 40 that are archivally taped. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

23 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge.

"Harry Davis draws from more than 10,000 pieces produced by Tasha Tudor, and here includes 150 of her finest paintings and drawings, including holiday cards, illustrations from her classic children's books, fashion designs she made for Pierre Deux, and samples from her personal sketchbooks. Tasha Tudor is the illustrator, author, or subject of more than ninety books, including 'The Secret Garden', one of the bestselling children's books of all time. She has left an indelible print on the traditions and celebrations of devoted fans all over the world. (She) has lived her art for three-quarters of a century, raising her own food, spinning and weaving her family's clothes, and leaving the fruits of her hobbies to the world as paramount collections - her gardens are famous, and her collection of 1830s clothing is the world's best. This is the definitve look at how Tasha Tudor's life has created her art, how her art has shaped her life, and why it is essential to view them together to best appreciate her gracious legacy. Davis provides detailed biographical information, everything from the origin of Tasha's name to how she raised four children on her own, in order to illustrate the amazing connection between her life and work. Would you care to hear me talk of them? Well, I ask nothing better, for there is no volume there which is not a dear personal friend, and what can a man talk of more pleasantly than that? TOMIE DEPAOLA: HIS ART & HIS STORIES. (DE PAOLA), Elleman, Barbara. Preface by Trina Schart Hyman.
29 Elleman, Barbara. Preface by Trina Schart Hyman. TOMIE DEPAOLA: HIS ART & HIS STORIES. (DE PAOLA)
New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1999 0399231293 / 9780399231292 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Tomie dePaola
218 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Tomie dePaola is among the best known, best loved artist-authors creating books for children today. His art and his stories, filled with imagination, humor, elegance, and curiosity, emanate from a love of life reflected in everything he does. Barbara Elleman, a critic in her own right, explores Tomie dePaola as artist and storyteller. The result is this fascinating, highly readable account which looks first at dePaola's life, complete with family photographs, and then at the extraordinary scope of his work - autobiographical picture books, folktales, Christmas themes, religious stories, collections, and more. She explores patterns and motifs that thread through his illustrations from the beginning; discusses major influences on his art; gives a rare glimpse at his fine art and his 'non-book' designs; provides an intriguing step-by-step account of the development of a picture book, 'Big Anthony, His Story', from the original draft of the manuscript to finished art. Ms. Elleman's thoughtful narrative brings a fresh appreciation of this unique artist-author. Tomie dePaola's followers and those discovering him for the first time will find this remarkable volume filled with over 200 illustrations a feast for the eye to be looked at again and again." A few very tiny edge bumps. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR., Engen, Rodney K.
30 Engen, Rodney K. WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR.
New York St. Martin's Press 1975 85670170X First American Edition Soft Cover Very Good Walter Crane.
105 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour reproductions. "Walter Crane, artist of Kensington, was a man of many talents, but possibly best known for his original and charmingly executed designs which made him the leading illustrator of children's books of the Aesthetic Movement period. In the face of the commercial vulgarity and ugliness of Victorian industrialised society, he created a delicate and escapist fairy world which, with its emphasis on spontaneity and mobility of line, and its clever use of background and colour, popularised a completely new style of tasteful book designs, and brought them within the reach of everyone. The influence of Crane's work and his highly novel theories of design make him an important figure in nineteenth century art history. (The author) discusses Crane's style and ideas in a study delightfully arranged after Crane's own rules and book design. He includes nearly 100 illustrations, ranging from nursery rhymes and fairytales to tailpieces and borders, mostly full page as Crane designed them, and 16 in the full colour he helped to pioneer. The extensive annotated catalogue is an invaluable aid for both student and specialist." Previous owner's bookplate on half title page. Interior - previous owner's bookplate on half-title page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor corner wear, small area of delamination at bottom front corner.

31 Evans, Hilary and Evans, Mary. THE LIFE AND ART OF GEORGE CRUIKSHANK 1792-1878.
New York S.G. Phillips 1978 0875992277 / 9780875992273 Hard Cover Very Good Good George Cruikshank
192 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions. "When George Cruikshank died, (over) a hundred years ago, he was admired as an artist, respected as a reformer, loved as a man. But he had lived so long and created so much that few could discern any unity underlying the diverse creations of his seventy-year working life - creations ranging from a thumbnail caricature of Napoleon III ('it never reigns but it bores!') to the four-metres-wide 'Worship of Bacchus' which now hangs, dusty and neglected, in the storerooms of the Tate Gallery. For some he was the artist who showed us Oliver Twist asking for mroe; for some the whimsical delineator of elves and fairies; for others the fanatical reformer who drew 'The Bottle' to convert us all from the Demon Drink. Everything he created was a spontaneous response to the world he saw. It might be something trivial, as when he went on a day-trip to Boulogne - the only time he left English soil! - and memorialized the event in a masterly sketch of seasick travellers (which perhaps explains why the adventure was never repeated). Or it might be on a deeper level, as when he symbolises in 'The Drunkard's Children' all the horrors of modern industrial society. It is his ability to see the world both as it is and as it might be which is the greatness of Cruikshank, both as a man and as an artist, and this book sets out to reveal the continual development of his art as a reflection of his continual development as a man. It therefore takes the form of a running commentary on pictures which are themselves a running commentary on the artist's outward and inward life. From more than two hundred pictures, one of the widest selections of his work ever brought together, Cruickshank emerges, not just as one of the world's greatest illustrators, but as a visionary artist whose work, at first glance so light and casual, reveals a profound sympathy and understanding of human life." Minor bump at top bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, some light rubbing on rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wear, moderate edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, light fading to spine and flap-fold color, 2" puckered triangular closed tear and small puncture with associated rub line on rear panel, 1" tear at bottom of front flap fold, minor rubbing and soiling on rear panel.

WHO'S WHO IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS: A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR CHARACTERS OF CHILDHOOD., Fisher, Margery.
34 Fisher, Margery. WHO'S WHO IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS: A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR CHARACTERS OF CHILDHOOD.
New York Holt, Rinehart and Winston 1975 0030150914 / 9780030150913 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Various.
399 pp, 10" H. Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout with b&w drawings and colour plates. "Who does not have vivid memories of characters from the books of childhood? Alice in Wonderland, Brer Rabbit, Dr Dolittle, Paddington Bear, the Railway Children, Winnie the Pooh, Tom Sawyer - the list is endless. Many names are so familiar - favourites from generation to generation - that they need no repeating; others are half forgotten; some may be almost unknown. This book is for everyone who wishes to recapture those memories and to find fresh inspiration for reading. It is a personal collection of characters from the world of children's fiction, by an author widely known and respected for her extensive knowledge on the subject. Entries include not only human characters but humanized or personalized animals, toys and vehicles, fairy and folk tale characters. The distinctive qualities of each are evoked in the writing - their appearance, mannerisms, speech, details of background, their role within the story - so that the reader recaptures or is introduced to the essential personality of the character concerned. From Margery Fisher's pertinent critical comments one is given an indication of the quality and status of the book in question. Approximately 400 illustrations accompany the text, showing not only the well-known representations of the characters, but title pages, authors' photographs, and scenes from film treatments. This is an invaluable treasury in which to look up characters from children's books, trace where they appeared, find their authors and first publication dates. It will inspire enthusiasm to read books not previously known and can be read by anyone for pure enjoyment." Minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's name and date on half-title page. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, tiny dent on spine.

40 Goulart, Ron. AN INFORMAL HISTORY OF THE PULP MAGAZINE.
New York Ace 1973 Mass Market Paperback Good Reference Copy
192 pp, 7" H. B&w illustrations. "Spanning the years between the dime novels of the 19th century and today's paperbacks, pulp magazines provided millions with their first and only taste of 'literature'. The noble, resourceful heroes of those gripping tales of fiction, along with their monstrous, evil antagonists, were depicted on cheap paper, and housed in lurid covers that shocked all but the near-blind. There was 'The Shadow', scourge of the underworld, 'Doc Savage', superhuman adventurer, and 'The Phantom Detective', sleuth extraordinaire, a well as the breathtaking exploits of World War I sky fighters, mad scientists, 'Tarzan' and a host of now-immortal writers. The printed word has indeed become alive in that most vigorous and thrilling of literary eras." "Special! Original illustrations."
