TOMIE DEPAOLA: HIS ART & HIS STORIES. (DE PAOLA), Elleman, Barbara. Preface by Trina Schart Hyman.
22 Elleman, Barbara. Preface by Trina Schart Hyman. TOMIE DEPAOLA: HIS ART & HIS STORIES. (DE PAOLA)
New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1999 0399231293 / 9780399231292 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Tomie dePaola
218 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Tomie dePaola is among the best known, best loved artist-authors creating books for children today. His art and his stories, filled with imagination, humor, elegance, and curiosity, emanate from a love of life reflected in everything he does. Barbara Elleman, a critic in her own right, explores Tomie dePaola as artist and storyteller. The result is this fascinating, highly readable account which looks first at dePaola's life, complete with family photographs, and then at the extraordinary scope of his work - autobiographical picture books, folktales, Christmas themes, religious stories, collections, and more. She explores patterns and motifs that thread through his illustrations from the beginning; discusses major influences on his art; gives a rare glimpse at his fine art and his 'non-book' designs; provides an intriguing step-by-step account of the development of a picture book, 'Big Anthony, His Story', from the original draft of the manuscript to finished art. Ms. Elleman's thoughtful narrative brings a fresh appreciation of this unique artist-author. Tomie dePaola's followers and those discovering him for the first time will find this remarkable volume filled with over 200 illustrations a feast for the eye to be looked at again and again." A few very tiny edge bumps. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR., Engen, Rodney K.
24 Engen, Rodney K. WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR.
New York St. Martin's Press 1975 85670170X First American Edition Soft Cover Very Good Walter Crane.
105 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour reproductions. "Walter Crane, artist of Kensington, was a man of many talents, but possibly best known for his original and charmingly executed designs which made him the leading illustrator of children's books of the Aesthetic Movement period. In the face of the commercial vulgarity and ugliness of Victorian industrialised society, he created a delicate and escapist fairy world which, with its emphasis on spontaneity and mobility of line, and its clever use of background and colour, popularised a completely new style of tasteful book designs, and brought them within the reach of everyone. The influence of Crane's work and his highly novel theories of design make him an important figure in nineteenth century art history. (The author) discusses Crane's style and ideas in a study delightfully arranged after Crane's own rules and book design. He includes nearly 100 illustrations, ranging from nursery rhymes and fairytales to tailpieces and borders, mostly full page as Crane designed them, and 16 in the full colour he helped to pioneer. The extensive annotated catalogue is an invaluable aid for both student and specialist." Previous owner's bookplate on half title page. Interior - previous owner's bookplate on half-title page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor corner wear, small area of delamination at bottom front corner.

25 Evans, Hilary and Evans, Mary. THE LIFE AND ART OF GEORGE CRUIKSHANK 1792-1878.
New York S.G. Phillips 1978 0875992277 / 9780875992273 Hard Cover Very Good Good George Cruikshank
192 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions. "When George Cruikshank died, (over) a hundred years ago, he was admired as an artist, respected as a reformer, loved as a man. But he had lived so long and created so much that few could discern any unity underlying the diverse creations of his seventy-year working life - creations ranging from a thumbnail caricature of Napoleon III ('it never reigns but it bores!') to the four-metres-wide 'Worship of Bacchus' which now hangs, dusty and neglected, in the storerooms of the Tate Gallery. For some he was the artist who showed us Oliver Twist asking for mroe; for some the whimsical delineator of elves and fairies; for others the fanatical reformer who drew 'The Bottle' to convert us all from the Demon Drink. Everything he created was a spontaneous response to the world he saw. It might be something trivial, as when he went on a day-trip to Boulogne - the only time he left English soil! - and memorialized the event in a masterly sketch of seasick travellers (which perhaps explains why the adventure was never repeated). Or it might be on a deeper level, as when he symbolises in 'The Drunkard's Children' all the horrors of modern industrial society. It is his ability to see the world both as it is and as it might be which is the greatness of Cruikshank, both as a man and as an artist, and this book sets out to reveal the continual development of his art as a reflection of his continual development as a man. It therefore takes the form of a running commentary on pictures which are themselves a running commentary on the artist's outward and inward life. From more than two hundred pictures, one of the widest selections of his work ever brought together, Cruickshank emerges, not just as one of the world's greatest illustrators, but as a visionary artist whose work, at first glance so light and casual, reveals a profound sympathy and understanding of human life." Minor bump at top bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, some light rubbing on rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wear, moderate edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, light fading to spine and flap-fold color, 2" puckered triangular closed tear and small puncture with associated rub line on rear panel, 1" tear at bottom of front flap fold, minor rubbing and soiling on rear panel.

28 Hamilton, James. ARTHUR RACKHAM: A LIFE WITH ILLUSTRATIONS.
London Pavilion 1990 1851455310 / 9781851455317 2nd Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Arthur Rackham.
199 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H). Beautifully illustrated with b&w photographs and b&w and colour reproductions of Arthur Rackham's work. "Arthur Rackham's magical illustrations for such works as 'Rip Van Winkle', 'Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens', 'Alice in Wonderland', 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'The Wind in the Willows' have attained the classic status of the writings themselves - indeed, in some cases, they have become synonymous with them, making his versions among the most highly collected of all illustrated books. Rackham himself, however, has remained a shadowy figure, half-glimpsed and as elusive as the fairies and gnomes that inhabit his pictures. Here - with the full cooperation of Rackham's family and using previously unpublished documentary and pictorial evidence from British, European and American sources - James Hamilton provides a revealing examination of the artist and his work. In a detailed biographical survey he focusses on the various phases of Rackham's artistic development, and considers his family background and influences, his travels and his professional progress in the decade before the First World War from minor illustrator to celebrated artist. He reveals Rackham's considerable talents as a landscape and portrait painter, and traces his responses both to his successes and mid-career setbacks, and his subsequent rediscovery and return to cult status in America. (He) also discusses Rackham's artistic methods and his skill in creating work that was technically suited to contemporary printing processes, and reviews his fluctuating financial successes in the context of the business of book illustration. Detailed appendices include a chronology of Rackham's life, discussions of his technique and how he was able to make freelance illustration pay, and a complete bibliography of books illustrated by him." Fading to color at top/bottom edge of spine, two tiny corner bumps. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, moderate fading to color on spine and on hinge areas, light browning to top edge of flaps.

WILLIAM HEATH ROBINSON., Hamilton, James.
29 Hamilton, James. WILLIAM HEATH ROBINSON.
London Pavilion 1992 1851457194 / 9781851457199 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine William Heath Robinson.
151 pp, 12 1/8" H. B&w and colour reproductions, photographs. "In this first fully illustrated monograph of William Heath Robinson's life and work, James Hamilton makes a refreshingly new exploration of the personality of this convivial family man and deeply serious artist. Through fascinating new insights, he traces the influences on his art, the development of his uniquely individual humorous style, and the unexpected path that his career followed: the switch from landscapes to book illustration, and early success as illustrator of Poe, Cervantes and Hans Andersen; the creation of his engaging character Uncle Lubin, his cartoons for magazines, and the First World War anti-German satires which earned him an enthusiastic following. Only after he had submitted his illustrations for a 'Complete Works of Shakespeare' in 1922, promptly cancelled, did Heath Robinson turn away from literary illustration. Then came the immensely popular books on golf and railways and motoring, murals and decorations for a liner, gadgets for the Ideal Home Exhibition of 1934, and a wealth of inspired magazine and commercial work. Hamilton rounds off his account of Heath Robinson's life and career with detailed appendices, including a chronology of his life, an important discussion of his sources, comprehensive bibliographies, and lists of his exhibitions, advertising work and ephemera. Published here for the first time are examples of the recently discovered Shakespeare illustrations." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

208 pp, 11" H. "J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) renowned author of 'The Hobbit', 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Silmarillion', was an artist in pictures as well as in words. Though he often remarked that he had no talent for drawing, his art has charmed his readers and has been exhibited to large and appreciative audiences the world over. In fact, his talent was far more than he admitted, and his sense of design was natural and keen. (This book) explores Tolkien's art at length, from his childhood paintings and drawings to his final sketches. At its heart are his illustrations for his books, especially his tales of Middle-earth. Also examined are the pictures Tolkien made for his children, his expressive calligraphy, his love of decoration, and his contributions to the typography and design of his books. With 200 reproductions, many in full colour, this lavishly-produced book offers a perfect opportunity for anyone wishing to discover a largely unexplored aspect of J.R.R. Tolkien's character." JEAN AND LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF: THE LEGACY OF BABAR., Hildebrand, Ann Meinzen. (Jean de Brunhoff, Laurent de Brunhoff.)
32 Hildebrand, Ann Meinzen. (Jean de Brunhoff, Laurent de Brunhoff.) JEAN AND LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF: THE LEGACY OF BABAR.
New York Twayne 1991 0805782672 / 9780805782677 1st Printing Hard Cover Fine Fine
175 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "In her unique study of the Babar milieu, Ann Meinzen Hildebrand looks at the de Brunhoffs' complete works, analyzing the thematic development of the stories and commenting on the essential role of the illustrations. Acknowledging the differences between the work of father and son, Hildebrand attributes the series' continuing popularity to the way in which both artists have created an elephant cosmos that is a mirror of a real and ideal life. She shows how de Brunhoff 'pere et fils' have eschewed simple 'animal fantasy' for fascinating characters who respond to everyday situations, both tragic and frivolous, thoughtfully and act on the principles of perseverance, patience, hope, and courage. Hildebrand's comprehensive study establishes the genius of the de Brunhoffs and explains how one kindly, nondidactic elephant in a derby hat has become such a socializing force for young readers.'

34 Hunt, Peter, editor. Associate editors: Dennis Butts, Ethel Heins, Margaret Kinnell, Tony Watkins. With Gillian Avery, Anne Scott MacLeod, Julia Briggs, Zena Sutherland, Peter Hollindale, Michael Stone, Roderick McGillis & Beth Gilderdale. CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1995 0192123203 / 9780192123206 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good
378 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and color photographs and reproductions. "(T)races the history of children's books in Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand from the very first printed books through to the present day. (This book) takes 'children's literature' to mean books designed for children as well as books for childhood, and so embraces everything from religious tracts to multi-media comics, from the 'classic' to the unashamedly popular. Written by leading experts, this survey shows that children's literature reflects how childhood has been defined, controlled, and appreciated at different times. It reveals how adults have explored questions of power, entertainment, sexuality, and equality through their writing for children, and demonstrates how the borders between what is adult and what children's fiction are routinely blurred. A series of chronological chapters charts the 'history' which begins in the sixteenth century with grammars and ABCs. We move from books of instruction through to fables and fantasies in the eighteenth century, from reward books and romance to school stories in the nineteenth, and on to comics, colour picture-books, and science fiction in (the twentieth century). Throughout the text, books, authors, illustrators, publishers, and children readers are discussed within their wider social, political, and economic environment. Richly illustrated in black and white and colour, and with a section on further reading, a full index, and a chronology which places books for children in their literary and political context, this is a fascinating study which will delight all readers, young and old." Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling; tiny dent on front hinge; slight fading to color on front panel, spine, top edge and flap-folds.
