CIRCUS TOYS., Tearle, Peggy.
22 Tearle, Peggy. CIRCUS TOYS.
Leicester Dryad. 1952 Soft Cover Good
60 pp + large folded sheet of patterns laid in, 8 7/16" H. B&w photographs, drawings. "A hand-made toy has a particular appeal; if it is not perfect, it will probably have personality - and expert workmanship will make it outstanding, provided always that the design is good. Very few tools are required for toymaking, and the technique is not difficult to pick up. Moreover, the work gets increasingly interesting as experience is gained. The circus theme gives plenty of scope for imagination; trappings and trimmings can be varied endlessly, and the patterns adapted to make new costumes. With slight alterations to the facial expressions, entirely new characters can be introduced. These figures and animals are good as a group, and have therefore been made to scale. As the animals range from five to sixteen inches in height, full directions for enlarging or reducing the patterns have been included." Introduction. Contents: Materials; Ringmaster; Toby Dog; Clown; Seal; Polar Bear; Cossack; Brown Bear; Shetland Pony; Chimpanzee; Horse; Ballerina; Cowboy. Interior - moderate bump to bottom corner of text block, small bump at top corner, large diagonal crease on page 15/16, pocket at rear is torn in several place s but has been archivally taped, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - moderate bump at bottom corner, small light bump at top corner, heavy crease down center of rear cover, very light edge wear, small scuff and small light soiling mark on rear cover. Patterns in pocket are complete but have fold creases and there are a few small tears at fold joints.

THE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO PAINTING WATERCOLORS., Williams, Rosemary.
24 Williams, Rosemary. THE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO PAINTING WATERCOLORS.
London Bison 1993 1858410061 / 9781858410067 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
80 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "(An) invaluable manual designed to entice beginners and enthusiasts of all levels of ability to paint for their own pleasure. Just like reading and writing, drawing and painting can be taught. This clearly written and richly illustrated book takes the reader step by step through a series of exercises, explaining both theory and technique in an informative and accessible way. The medium of watercolor has fascinated artists for many years, and reached a peak with British landscapists such as Turner and Constable. This book discusses both the English method, which uses no white but allows the paper to show through the layers of wash, and the radical and dramatic effects that can be achieved by using gouache and mixed media. Specially commissioned artwork in both color and black and white complements the text in explaining how to choose and prepare materials; how to draw and lay a wash; how to manipulate color; and how to use and apply a wide range of techniques. Over 90 glorious full-color illustrations include both historical examples and a fascinating selection from the work of contemporary artists, providing a superb guide to a universlly appealing subject." Slight waviness to fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two very tiny staple holes at top of front panel, slight fading to spine colour.
