COCHRANE: BRITANNIA'S SEA WOLF., Thomas, Donald.
21 Thomas, Donald. COCHRANE: BRITANNIA'S SEA WOLF.
Cassell, London, 2002, reprint.
383 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 030435659X "The life of Thomas, Lord Cochrane was more extraordinary than that of Nelson, and more than outshines his fictional counterparts, Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey. He made his name battling Napoleo n's Navy in a series of outstanding and heroic actions, often fighting his ship against seemingly overwhelming odds. His life on land was equally dramatic. As a campaigner against corruption in the Admiralty he won himself many enemies, and w a s l a ter framed in a Stock Exchange fraud. Following his imprisonment he returned to the sea and, in a series of dramatic actions again famous for their disregard of the most daunting risks, helped liberate Brazil and Chile from colonial rule . I n t hi s fascinating biography, Donald Thomas tells the astounding story of one of the most daring and successful real-life heroes the naval world has ever seen." Interior - minor browning tin page margins, otherwise clean and tight with no pr ev iou s ow ner sh ip marks. Exterior - minor browning to edges of text block, one tiny corner crease, soft crease on front cover. Very Good+

THE BATTLE OF THE NILE., Warner, Oliver.
23 Warner, Oliver. THE BATTLE OF THE NILE.
London B.T. Batsford 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Very Good-
184 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "(Oliver Warner's) approach to The Nile is the same as it was in (his) earlier work (on Tragalgar). The scene is set, the circumstances under which the battle was fought are made clear; the commanders are introduced and the reader comes to know them as human beings no less than as naval captains; the action itself is graphically described, largely through the eye-witness accounts of participants; and the battle's aftermath is followed through in a way which relates the particular action to the war as a whole. The vividness of Mr. Warner's narrative is heightened by the number and variety of his illustrations. Here, from their faces, we can see what manner of men were Nelson, Napoleon, Troubridge, Brueys, de Saumarez or Ball; we can follow the English line as it unhesitatingly sailed into action against the anchored French; and we are present when 'L'Orient' blew up. (This book) is, in short, a most spirited and expert account of one of the classic naval actions of history." Previous owner's small stamp on front end papers, small bookstore label on front papstedown, light to moderate edge wear, several small areas of color loss on rear board, two small corner bumps, light wrinkling at bottom of spine soft crease down spine, light fading to color on top of text block. Dust jacket has been clipped on both flaps, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of flap-folds and spine, browning on spine and some edges.

THE GLORIOUS FIRST OF JUNE. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES., Warner, Oliver.
24 Warner, Oliver. THE GLORIOUS FIRST OF JUNE. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
New York Macmillan 1961 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
184 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "The Glorious First of June, 1794, the first full-scale naval battle in the war with Revolutionary France, is remembered with honour, even though, strategically, it was not successful. Lord Howe defeated Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse, took six ships of the line, and sank 'Le Vengeur', without losing a single British ship, but a precious convoy, the cause of the action, reached France in safety. Although French sacrifice had not been in vain, Howe had shown that, in general combat, the British navy was incomparable. (This) is the only extensive account of the fight, and of Lord Howe's methods as an admiral, to have been written during the past century. In an Epilogue, Mr. Warner considers the subject of Sovereign's honours and awards to the Royal Navy, which in a particular sense derived from royal recognition of Howe's victory. Mr. Warner at one time served as Secretary to the Admiralty Committee on awards in time of war, and his account is authoritative." Previous owner's small stamp on each of the front endpapers, very light edge wear, small bump at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
