She was his only daughter and he doted on her. She married the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, at 19, with an enormous dowry. At first, life at Highclere was a dizzying mix of sumptuous banquets for 500 and even the occasional royal visitor. Almina oversaw 80 members of staff - many of whom came from families who had worked at Highclere for generations. But when the First World War broke out, life at Highclere, both upstairs and downstairs, changed forever. History intervened and Almina and the staff of Highclere were thrown into one of the most turbulent times of the last century. Almina was forced to draw on her deepest reserves of courage in order to ensure her family, the staff and the castle survived. This is the remarkable story of a lost time. But Highclere remains and in this book, Lady Carnarvon weaves Almina's journey and those of her family into the heritage and history of one of England's most exquisite Victorian stately homes." 194 Crane, Walter. OF THE DECORATIVE ILLUSTRATION OF BOOKS OLD AND NEW.
London Bracken 1984 0946495416 / 9780946495412 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
243 pp, 8vo (8" H). B&w illustrations. "Originally published in 1896, this survey of book illustration is both a comprehensive guide to many facets of early work in the field and important evidence of Victorian taste and the influences which shaped it. Walter Crane, as a leading designer and illustrator, was exceptionally well placed to survey the subject - indeed, some of the finest pieces among over 100 drawings reproduced here are those by Crane himself. Crane begins by describing the artist's role in producing manuscripts and early printed books up to the end of the sixteenth century, giving an account of Italian, French and (particularly) German work. He then moves to the beginning of 'modern illustration', which he dates from the work of Blake, and takes in most of the major Victorian exponents of the art, with examples from such men as Rossetti, Selwyn Image, Arthur Hughes, Laurence Housman, Howard Pyle and Will H. Bradley. The result is a book which has delighted the collector for many years, and is now in increasing demand among art historians and typographers." Faint erased pencil mark on front free endpaper, light browning in margins of pages and to edges of text block, light wrinkling at fore-edge of pages 32 to 44 with two very small tears on fore-edge of pages 37 to 40 that are archivally taped. A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES., Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan.
195 Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan. A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES.
Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Soft Cover Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Interior - crease at bottom corner of page leaf 89/90, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.

197 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

"Once again our detective is the charming and erudite Kate Fansler, professor of English Literature at an American university, aided by the New York assistant district attorney, Reed Amheart, who she has recently married. In an emergency she agrees to take on a senior seminar on 'Antigone' at her old school, the Theban. The central situation of the play, Antigone's determination to give token burial to her brother, in defiance of King Creon's edict, provides a challenge to which the girls at the Theban respond eagerly - a heroine defying to the death the tyranny of the State. And Kate soon finds herself deeply involved in today's confrontations and crises. But the crunch comes when a pupil's mother - a heart patient, and neurotic - is found dead in the school in the middle of the night. How did she get there? And why? And how did she die? Was she frightened to death by the guard dogs that patrol the building at night? Or was she brought to the school already a corpse? Reed offers himself as guinea pig to test the reactions of the terrifying Dobermans. And Kate skilfully probes the girls' reactions by judging their passionate responses to the Greek drama." Small very light stain at top edge of free front endpaper, a few tiny foxing marks on fore-edge and top edge of text block, tiny bump at bottom of spine.
