182 Newman, Peter. Revised by R.J. Wilkinson-Latham. DISCOVERING MILITARIA: AN INTRODUCTION TO COLLECTING.
Shire, Aylesbury, 1972, revised edition.
63 pp, 6 15/16" H, soft cover. B&w photographs, drawings. "The collection and study of militaria - that is, of items connected with the armed forces of Great Britain and other countries - is a rapidly growing interest. This burgeoning enthusiasm owes much to the decine of the old-style warfare, replaced by the strategic technology of modern armies. Much of the individuality of regiments and armies of the past has been obliterated, and so it is that many people want to preserve in their own homes some of the variety, some of the colour, and some of the glory of past battles. (This book) is a useful guide to the main fields of militaria available to the collector - medals and awards, uniforms, swords and daggers, firearms and b a y o n e t s - concentrating on the British and German specimens most often come across, but also covering American, Russian and French examples. There is also advice for the inexperienced collector on distinguishing between genuine pieces and t he g ro wi ng n um ber of reproductions which inevitably crop up in a booming field, as well as hints on the likely cost of items, on preserving them, and on the most effective methods of storage and display." Interior - very light browning to pa ges , o the rwi se cle an and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - two small soft corner creases, light rubbing, heavy fading to spine and rear hinge area color, minor edge wear, wrinkle on spine, soft crease on rear cover. Very Good -

160 pp, 12 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, drawings/diagrams. "Through Dan Patterson's remarkable photography, we get to see, close up, the cramped, cold, exposed turrets that so many young men fought and died in. (The author) examines the role each aircraft played in the war, and veterans describe in spirited detail what it was like to fly and fight in the war's most renowned aircraft. For the first time in print, 'Gunner' reveals not just the turrets of such famous aircraft as the Lancaster and the B-17, but also the rarely seen gun positions of aircraft such as the German Me 410, the Italian S.M. 79 and the Russian Il-2 Shturmovik. MEN-OF-WAR. LIFE IN NELSON'S NAVY., Patrick O'Brian.
198 Patrick O'Brian. MEN-OF-WAR. LIFE IN NELSON'S NAVY.
New York W.W. Norton 1995 0393038580 / 9780393038583 First American Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
95 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "This richly illustrated book offers a concise overview of the historical background to Patrick O'Brian's acclaimed Aubrey/Maturin series, a straightforward exploration of what daily life in Nelson's navy was really like for everyone from the captain to the rawest recruit. What did they eat? What songs did they sing? What was the schedule of the watches? What was the division of prize money to offices and crew? How did these men end up at sea in the first place? These questions and many more are answered in O'Brian's elegant narrative, which includes wonderful anecdotal material on the battles and commanders that established Britain's naval supremacy. Line drawings and charts help us to understand the construction and rigging of the great ships, the types and disposition of the guns, and how they were operated in battle. Contemporary drawings and cartoons illustrate aspects of naval life from the press gang to the scullery. Finally, a generous selection of full-color paintings renders the majesty and the excitement of fleet actions in the age of fighting sail. Any Aubrey/Maturin reader determined to learn the locations of the orlop and the mizenmast, the etiquette of epaulettes, or the range of a 32-pounder will delight in this invaluable reference companion to O'Brian's majestic series."

200 Perkins, J. David. THE CANADIAN SUBMARINE SERVICE IN REVIEW.

208 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, diagrams. "The Canadian Navy acquired its first submarines on the day the First World War was declared. As well, Canadian officers served in all theatres of war aboard British submarines, continuing into the Second World War. During WWII and the following Cold War Canada owned no submarines, but 'rented' submarine services from Britain and the US with which to train its large, modern anti-submarine fleet. Finally, during the 1960s the decision was made to acquire submarines for the RCN, and Canada now has a very dedicated submarine service of its own. Perkins, himself a submariner, ably chronicles that evolution in these pages." Dust jacket has very minor rubbing, small shallow indentation on spine.
