206 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs. "Charles Pickard joined the Royal Air Force before the outbreak of World War II, and at the beginning of hostilities was posted to No.99 Bomber Squadron and was later to command the Czech 311 Squadron. He took part in the Bruneval raid, and came to the forefront of public attention when he starred as 'F for Freddie' in 'Target for Tonight', a film made to illustrate the operational role of the bomber. His secret missions began when he was posted to RAF Tempsford, the jumping off ground for the SOE operations from where, as a Lysander pilot, his sorties took him deep into enemy territory at night to drop secret agents and supplies. Time after time he demonstrated his extraordinary ability for night flying but, ironically, was killed while taking a prominent part in the famous daylight raid on the prison at Amiens." 352 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "This important study of the cause and effects of Napoleon's removal from power tracks the significant events in his illustrious career through to his downfall and, while doing so, charts the clandestine diplomatic intrigues linking Britain, Austria, Russia and Prussia in the quest for the Emperor's demise. Using substantial new research, (the author) questions many of the established views in Napoleonic literature to date. By disclosing hitherto secret terrorist organizations, uncovering the attempts to assassinate Napoleon, highlighting unbridled political duplicity, and demonstrating a host of previously misinterpreted signals and actions, he instigates a fresh assessment of the fall of Napoleon, new reasons to consider how much it was self-inflicted and how much it became inevitable given the combined forces - 'friend' and well as 'foe' - ranged against him. However great his military campaigns, how often he was victorious on the battle-field, Napoleon was destined to be deposed by political connivance and personal betrayal." PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT., Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray.
186 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray. PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT.
Brockhampton, London, 1999.
415 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860199127 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The catalyst for the formation of British airborne forces came with the spectacular display of the capabilities of airborne assault by the German forces in the blitzkrieg against the west in 1940. Impressed by the daring and courage of the fallschirmjager, Churchill sought to create a similar arm for the British Army. Initially airborne operations were carried out by volunteers from all regiments and corps. While Britain was on the defensive, the newly formed parachute units took part in two airborne raids, carrying the war to the enemy in Italy and France. Of these, the most famous is the raid on Bruneval in 1942, duri ng which German rad ar technology was captured. By the time the Allies were ready to invade 'Fortress Europe' in 1944, The Parachute Regiment, which had been formed in 1942, comprised a large number of well equipped and highly trained battali o n s . Those of the 6th Air borne Division were given the task of holding the vital left flank of the Normandy invasion beaches to block German reinforcements and ensure swift Allied breakout over the strategically vital bridges. The Regiment's m os t fa mo u s hour was again an e xcellent example of the nature of the warfare it had been conceived to conduct: the ill-fated combined airborne/ground assault in Holland in September 1944 depended entirely on a surprise airborne assault to open a c or rid or in t o Germany along which the British Second Army was to pour into the heart of Hitler's Reich. Although the plan failed, it firmly established The Parachute Regiment as an elite force: tough, well-trained and capable of undertaking haza rdo us o per ati on s deep in enemy territ ory. This tradition is no less true now, fifty years on, with the post-war period having seen many further stirring examples of the Regiment's skill and valour throughout the world: from Suez and the jungl es o f Mal aya to t he mountains of the Radfan , the Falkland Islands and duties in Northern Ireland." KNIGHTS OF THE AIR: CANADIAN ACES OF WORLD WAR I. GREAT STORIES OF CANADA SERIES NO. 18., Harris, John Norman. Illustrated by William Wheeler.
187 Harris, John Norman. Illustrated by William Wheeler. KNIGHTS OF THE AIR: CANADIAN ACES OF WORLD WAR I. GREAT STORIES OF CANADA SERIES NO. 18.
Macmillan, Toronto, 1960, reprint.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, B&w and black, white & green illustrations. "High above the mud and slaughter of the trenches, the little wood-and-fabric airplanes looped, rolled, banked, in mortal duel. So me of the soldiers who stared at them in the skies of France and Flanders in 1915 were Canadians. They had not dreamt that they would ever leave the ground. Yet within three years Canadians had proved themselves masters of this new form of f i g h t i n g and a dozen Canadians ranked among the top aces of the world. This book is about those Canadian masters of the aerial dogfight. Barker of Manitoba is here - incredibly daring hero of the French and Italian fronts who, with both legs a nd o ne a rm s hattered by enemy bullets, shot down four attackers and drove off the rest before he crashed behind his own lines: crowning exploit of a flying career in which he had destroyed 50 enemy aircraft. Collishaw of Vancouver is here, wi th his sc ore of 60 . Only half-a-dozen aces of all nations surpassed him - and only Bishop among the Canadians with his tally of 72. For Billy Bishop was most famous of all. In his first six weeks of flying he scored 17 victories and won the DSO and the MC. Fo ur w eeks later he added the VC. Many other aces are here - McKeever, MacLaren, Claxton, McCall, Quigley, Carter, Burden, Milne, Bell-Irving. Flying without parachutes in machines which burnt like torches when they caug ht f ire, thes e air men t ook f right ful risks. Below them, men lived in muddy trenches under shell-fire; they depended on the work of the airmen above and the airmen did not let them down. This is their story." Written for the younger reader. "Packed with authentic atmosphere, the retreat and the desperate lifting of the weary soldiers is seen in its tragic entirety, often through first-hand reco llections of the men who were there. The story of Dunkirk is a dramatic epic of courage and confusion, resulting in a successful and often heroic evacuation....(Harris) describes in vivid detail how the evacuation developed, on a day-by-d a y b a s i s , and destroys more than one of the myths that have come to be associated with Dunkirk. However, the spirit, humour and drama that epitomised what came to be known as the 'spirit of Dunkirk' was, and is, undeniable. Illustrated wit h ma n y co nt em po ra r y photographs, this book provides a complete historical account of the lifting of the British expeditionary force in the first week of June 1940...." 190 Hennell, George. Edited by Michael Glover. A GENTLEMAN VOLUNTEER: THE LETTERS OF GEORGE HENNELL FROM THE PENINSULAR WAR, 1812-1813.
Heinemann, London, (1979), first edition.
181 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w reproductions, maps, battle plans. "George Hennell, born about 1785 the son of a Coventry ribbon manufacturer and tradesman, joined Wellington's army in the Peninsula as a Volunteer, was commissioned in the field in the Forty-third Light Infantry, and served through the campaigns of 1812-13. Of his letters home twenty-six (all but two of them unpublished) survive, and these have been edited by the historian Michael Glover with a ge neral introduction, summaries of the events in the campaign covered by the letters, notes and appendices. The discovery of the letters represents a considerable find. Hennell is particularly good at conveying the detail of everyday life i n t h e f i e ld and camp and from his vivid pen the reader can gain a first-hand impression of what it was like to be a young officer on active service more than a century and a half ago. He is exceptional as a reporter because he not only rec ou nt s e ve nt s a s th ey happen but tries to analyse his own reactions to the dangers and horrors through which he is passing. He sometimes illustrated his letters with diagrams and fluent sketches, several of which are reproduced in this book . Hen ne ll' s s tor y beg in s d ramatically in the thick of the action when as a raw recruit armed only with a letter of introduction to General Picton he joins the British camp just two days before the bloody storming of the citadel of Badajoz. It end s w ith the vict or ious ar my d escending the Pyrenees to invade the soil of France shortly before the fall of Napoleon." Upon his heel was the white spot - symbol of speed; but upon his chest was the mark of the wheat ear - a sign of misfortune. And these two signs seemed to govern his life. Swift he was, swift as the wind, but time after time disaster almost overtook him. THE HISTORY OF BRITISH BUS SERVICES. 2nd REVISED EDITION., Hibbs, John.
192 Hibbs, John. THE HISTORY OF BRITISH BUS SERVICES. 2nd REVISED EDITION.

306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0715389629 B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "The bus industry is going through a period of rapid change, and this is best understood against the background of events, for decisions taken a s long ago as 1916 still influence its structure, and the way busmen think about their function. There are many strands to the story, the longest taking us back to the appearance of the hackney carriage and the stage coach in the seventee n t h c e n t u r y. There are the combine companies of the inter-war years, and their battle with the four main line railways for control of their services; there are the 'pirates', old and new; and there are the municipal transport fleets, stemm in g us u al ly f ro m tr amway operations. We have to go to nineteenth century France for the origin of the name 'omnibus' itself. Professor Hibbs discusses the effect of technical advances on the provision of public services, and writes of tick et sy ste ms , t ime tab les , fle et names and liveries, and some of the odder regulations that govern operations and the travelling public. There is an objective discussion of methods of licensing and control, and of the economic and political ba ckg rou nd o f t he b us o pera tors . But this is the story of the men and women as well as motor vehicles; of shrewd pioneers, international financiers, trade unionists and well-known politicians. Not least it is the story of the crews on the b uses , fo r who m th e ind ustry is n ot ju st a li ving, but a way of life as well....(this new edition includes a chapter that brings) the story from 1968 to 1988." University of Wisconsin Press, Madison, 1969.
596 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w tables, graphs, maps, photographs. "(D)escribes a contemporary ecological disaster and the search to explain it. Its extensive analysis offers, on the one hand, an unusual landmark in p opulation biology and, on the other, perhaps the requiem of a species. Once the prized favorite of medieval falconers, the cosmopolitan peregrine falcon was, until quite recently, a remarkably successful example of avian evolution. By the earl y 1 9 60's, however, peregrine populations were catastrophically declining on two continents. Other raptors were mysteriously and rapidly decreasing too. In an effort to establish the cause or causes of these unprecedented events, an internationa l c on fe rence of scientists, naturalists, and conservationists was convened at the University of Wisconsin in 1965. (This book) summarizes the proceedings of this conference and the enormous pool of unpublished population data that these investig at or s b rou ght together. (It) examines a wide variety of adverse factors - diseases, parasites, and human harassment - and reaches the conclusion that the concentration of chlorinated hydrocarbons by bird- and fish-eating raptors is the only hyp oth esi s th at c an adequately explain the simultaneous populations failures of so many species on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. A concluding chapter in the book briefly describes the research gaps that ecologists promptly closed after the con clus ion of th e con ference: insecticides were found in high levels in surviving peregrines in Alaska and the Canadian Arctic. A dramatic change in eggshell thickness was found to have overtaken various species of raptors in Britain, California, a nd Ma ssac husett s in 1 947. And chlorinated hydrocarbon residue levels in eggs were shown to be inversely correlated with eggshell thickness. The increasing production of persisting insecticides now appers to be a threat to the world's biota on a much wide r scale than t he one described in this book. The arguments and the data here presented will be of great interest to scientists, conservationists, naturalists, and laymen concerned with the pollution of our environment and with the su btle de layed effects that mod ern chemicals have on our wildlife resources." "(T)he personal experience of a young British infantryman during a remarkable year of European history, the year 1918. The outcome of the First World War and the f uture shape of Europe depended on the eighteen-year-old youngsters who were suddenly rushed into battle following the German Army breakthrough in the spring of that year. They were inexperienced, and had not finished their training. They ma t u r e d q uickly on the battlefield in France. From March to July they stubbornly defended precarious positions. In August they were Britain's prime assault troops in a 95 day non-stop attack culminating in the end of the four year war in Novem be r 19 18 .. . .( This book follows) the down-to-earth experiences of the ordinary soldier, plucked from teenage life in Britain and thrust into the front line of an international conflict. 443 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The establishment of the United Nations system at the conclusion of the Second World War was followed by a period of disillusion in the late 40s about the prospects of world order. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 there came a regrouping of forces and revised calculations of what was possible. The first volume of 'The Shaping of Peace' described Canadian attitudes and policies towards international institutions as the Second World War ended. This volume is concerned with the developments in the decade after the war, with the changing Canadian concepts as they were shaped by events and challenges. Although principal attention is paid to the organs of the United Nations, other themes such as the establishment of NATO, the progress of the new Commonwealth, and the changing concepts of the North American relationship are analysed as essential elements in the Canadian search for equilibrium." 224 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1575001470 B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "The Western Front in World War I was the scene of devastating trench warfare and astonishing human loss: nearly 750,000 soldiers perished in the battles fought in France and Belgium from 1914 to 1918. (This book) traces the path those soldiers took, and presents the political, military, and human dilemmas of a bitter and bloody war. (It) takes us through the major and most costly battles of the Western Front, many of which garnered dubious gains at best, and all of which were won only with great human sacrifice. The first battle of Ypres was not only a scene of heavy Allied losses, but was dubbed by the Germ ans the 'Massacre of the Innocents'; Verdun was a scene of astonishing casualties, where the professed goal of the German commander was to bleed the French forces to death; the fighting in the trenches of the Somme - a battle of attrition tha t l a s t e d six months - proved a turning point for the morale of the British Army and 'the muddy grave of the German field Army, and of the confidence in the infallibility of German leadership'; while the long wearing slog toward Passchendaele w as pa ve d wi th inept leadership and mutinies in the French forces before dreadful conditions simply ground the battle to a halt. Portraying the Western Front in stark and moving terms, Holmes draws not only from current scholarship, but also fr om l ett ers w rit ten by the soldiers and the stories of the survivors themselves." 328 pp, 8vo, (9" H). B&w photographs, maps. "W. Stull Holt was 20 years old when he sailed for France in late March 1917 to join the American Ambulance Field Service. His patriotism, idealism, and desire for adventure had motivated him to volunteer just weeks before the U.S. declared war against Germany in April 1917. Holt ardently supported the war effort, and when his six-month contract with the AAFS was completed, he enlisted in the American Air Service where he won his pilot's wings, then applied for observer training. Holt was assigned as an observer-bombardier-gunner with the famed 20th Aero Squadron of the American 1st Daylight Bombardment Group, which dropped more bombs than any other American squadron at the front in World War I. He served near Verdun during the French summer offensive of 1917 where he was gassed; he later was awarded the French 'Croix de Guerre'." Very minor edge wear on covers.
