Unpaginated, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Opaque printed mylar dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "This bookwork, produced by Oakville Galleries, represents the third and final version of a photographic work begun two years ago at the Domaine de Kerguehennec in Brittany, France, where it took the form of a work in situ: a 'fonds photographic' that was placed in the drawers of the castle's library to become a permanent installation. The work represents a monument to a fictional woman photographer who lived in the castle sometime in the late 19th century, and who wandered the park - especially the area around the lake - obsessively taking pictures of the landscape. Her mental health slowly deterioriated and eventually she killed herself. Her decline is illustrated in the photographs placed in the drawers in porfolio folders or boxes - ." New York D. Appleton 1885 Hard Cover Very Good- No Jacket
576 pp, 598 pp, 8vo (8" H), olive green cloth with gold lettering and banding on spines, gold crest on front boards. These two volumes form the second part of 'The Greville Memoirs' which began with the reigns of George IV and William IV, but are complete in themselves, being numbered Vol. I and Vol. II. "(T)he present publication embraces a period of fourteen years, extending from the accession of Her Majesty Queen Victoria in 1837 to the coup d'etat of Napoleon III in 1851. The occurrences which took place after the close of 1851, the subsequent establishment of the Imperial power in France, the formation of the Cabinet of Lord Aberdeen, followed in 1853 by the Crimean War, mark an important epoch in the history of this country and Europe. I have therefore thought that this date is the appropriate conclusion of this portion of the work. Mr. Greville continued his Journal for nine years more, until the close of 1860, though in his later years he was less conversant with public affairs than he had been in the more active period of his life." From the Preface. Vol. I has a small bump to bottom corner of approx. first 50 pages, small finger print on verso of front free endpaper, small bump to bottom corner of rear board, small light stain at top fore-edge of textblock - scattered tiny faint foxing marks on lower fore-edge, small line scuff on front board. THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS., Guillet, Edwin C.
192 Guillet, Edwin C. THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1968 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
246 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps, drawings. "From portage trails snaking their way through the wilderness to superhighways carrying the raw materials and produce of an industrial nation, Canada's roads have had a romantic but long-neglected history. The problems which Canada has faced in seeking to connect two oceans by road would have been formidable even in a land more densely populated. Early builders found their way blocked by forest and swamp, rivers, rocks, vast areas of grassland, mountains, and muskeg. Their gradual success is recounted from the woodland trail cleared by Champlain in Acadia on through the early construction by corvee in New France; the Temiscouta Trail between the Atlantic Provinces and the Canadas; the infamous corduroy roads and bridges which jolted passengers unmercifully and lamed their horses; the plank roads, Canada's first contribution to road-building science; the cart tracks cut into the virgin prairies by Metis buffalo hunters; the Cariboo Road, build through sheer canyons and over mountain passes to the gold fields fo the Upper Fraser; and the vehicles which travelled these routes - the wonderul assortment of sleighs, caleches, buckboards, Red River carts, wagons, and stage-coaches of the nineteenth century. Then came the automobile, and with it an unprecedented personal mobility. Today Canada's roads are one of her principal resources. The Trans-Canada Highway, a dream for most of a century, has forged a new tie of asphalt and concrete, unifying the country." Dust jacket has very light edge wear, tiny dent on front hinge.

London Oxford University Press 1966 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Neville Dear.
154 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H). B&w illustrations by Neville Dear, dust jacket design by Gareth Floyd. Translation of "Shrimp le Corsaire", first published in 1954. "This is an epic tale of buccaneer adventure on the high seas; it is the story of Viscount Saint-Elme, known as the 'Malamok', who had once owned a fine fleet of privateers and used them in the service of his king, Louis XIV of France. But one of his officers proved treacherous, causing the Malamok's eldest son to be unjustly dishonoured and imprisoned. Thenceforward, misfortune dogged the Malamok who had withdrawn from the king's service and become a pirate. All of his ships but one were destroyed, and the old buccaneer knew only one aim: that of vengeance so that the family name might be cleared. Accompanied by the boy Shrimp, his young protege, the Malamok set sail on his last remaining ship, the 'Remailleuse', on a voyage of piracy and battle, seeking to destroy his enemy." The following June he left the beaches of Dunkirk in a paddle steamer with his battered but defiant comrades in arms. His story of everything that happened in between in the countryside of France is told with humour a nd humanity. The book first appeared a few months after Dunkirk, and was an instant bestseller. 176 pp, 12 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(B)egins with the earliest pieces of Western artillery that were little more than iron tubes firing stone shot. Over the next few centuries the guns became more mobile and more powerful, influencing the course of the battles in which they were involved. Muzzle loaders reached their apogee in the Napoleonic wars and the American Civil War during the nineteenth century. By the outbreak of World War I in 1914, breech-loaded guns were the standard, and weapons of such large calibres were being constructed that they needed to be mounted on rail wagons to give them any form of mobility. Artillery played a significant role in shaping how that conflict was fought, and it was to play an equally signifi-cant role in World War II. Only now, in the twenty-first century, is the supremacy of artillery on the battlefield being challenged by air-dropped precision-guided weapons, but the arm is fighting back with sophisticated new munitions becoming available which will ensure that artillery has a part to play on the modern battlefield for the forseeable future." Toronto Robin Brass 1999 1896941095 / 9781896941097 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
198 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. "The formal duel, with its elaborate ritual and code of conduct, was once considered the 'honourable' way for self-styled gentlemen to settle disputes involving character and integrity. The law made no special provisions for duelling - the winner in a fatal contest was a murderer. But the prevailling sentiment that a duel was 'fair', and the fact that upper-crust combatants in the thinly populated 19th-century Canada were well-connected with the judiciary, meant that duellists usually escaped with little or no punishment. What is surprising is that so many came from the ranks of those whose job it was to uphold the law - lawyers, judges and politicians, including at least two future Fathers of Confederation and several chief justices. Hugh Halliday not only describes some of the most interesting duels that took place in Canada but looks at duelling in light of our human tendency to ritualize conflicts with codes of acceptable and unacceptable practice. He also examines the steps that often led to a duel, including the public 'posting' of allegations, or insults, that was frequently a part of the process." Appendix: The Irish Duelling Code. "Beginning with a general description of a typical wartime bomber airfield, (this book) goes on to relate in their own words the personal stories of several crews and their missions. The locales vary, as do the targets, the results and the nationalities of the raconteurs, but the overall image is one of an Empire of bold young men treading where Goring boasted no enemy would succeed in treading. All the courage, drama, tragedy and, indeed, humour of war is contained in this compelling documentary which will appeal both to modern historians and enthusiasts as well as to those who remember the dark but strangely exhilarating days which it recalls."
