TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS., Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma.
183 Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma. TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS.
New Directions, New York, 1986, first edition.
123 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0811210103 "Relatively unknown in the West, (this book) is a fascinating, though often baffling, archaic collection of 186 'questions' about the origins of life and the meaning of a wide vari ety of happenings startling and mundane, earthly and celestial. Because the poem has no single narrative thread, the most informed speculation posits group authorship by a number of roving Taoist scholars, each contributing riddles about t h e h i s t o r y and legends of his own province as well as ironically posed inquiries into the nature of the universe. The enigmatic and sometimes Sphinxlike conundrums may have been originally intended for debate - to give the popular and promi ne nt di al ec ti ci an s of over 2,300 years ago a tool for honing their convoluted responses. But however the poem took on its present shape and content, it remains the single most comprehensive catalogue of ancient Chinese mythology and pre-Imp eri al l ege nd in exi ste nce . This translation....combines sound scholarship with an artful grace to produce the 186 questions in couplets that both tease and enchant. In addition to a historical introduction that clearly explains what is known and no t know n a bou t th e po em, Field provides extensive notes to help the English-speaking reader understand the basic Chinese myths alluded to in the questions." The poem is presented in Chinese 'li-shi' script opposite the English text. P revio us o wn er's chop (st amp p n hal f-ti tle page, tiny bump to top edge of both boards. Dust jacket is price clipped, minor rubbing. Very Good/Very Good

Garden City, New York Doubleday 1964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket

"(T)he reader is guided by Ruth Frieman's clear and penetrating explanations into the rich complexities of meaning, imagery, and characterization of 'Macbeth' - and gains a deeper understanding of the greatest playwright in English Literature. Macbeth as obedient husband, fearful and indecisive conspirator, calculating murderer, and finally as the haunted man who faces death with courage - all sides of this complex protagonist are revealed as the author traces Macbeth's steady movement towards his inexorable destiny in one of Shakespeare's most powerful tragedies. Featuring a helpful, introductory historical background on the Elizabethan theatre and Shakespeare's life, the 'Macbeth' TutorText will be an invaluable aid to high school English students and to all who seek a deeper comprehension of the famous Bard. (Includes a) line-by-line discussion of the text. (Miss Frieman's) lucid analysis bridges the gap between the obscure words and archaic idioms of the 16th century and the language of the 20th century, and she accompanies the text with discussions of the nature of tragedy and the tragic hero, Shakespeare's use of prose and poetry, the relationship between rhythm, rhyme, and meter, the effects of metaphor, and the use of dramatic and stage devices." ELIZABETH POSTUMA SIMCOE 1762-1850: A BIOGRAPHY. (POSTHUMA.), Fryer, Mary Beacock.
200 Fryer, Mary Beacock. ELIZABETH POSTUMA SIMCOE 1762-1850: A BIOGRAPHY. (POSTHUMA.)
Dundurn Press, Toronto, 1989.
276 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 1550020641 B&w and colour plates, maps. "Elizabeth Poshuma Simcoe was a remarkable woman. Raised in a wealthy and genteel English family, as a young wife, she accompanied her husband, the career soldier John Graves Simcoe, on his posting as the first lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada - then a sparsely populated backwoods outpost of the empire. She embraced with enthusiasm this chance for adventure and her diaries and her plentiful sketches reflect thi s joy of discovery in this 'new land'. The Simcoes returned to England in 1796 to await further imperial postings. John Graves Simcoe died in 1806 and his widow lived on to 1850 as a wealthy English countrywoman. While her popular Canadi a n d i a r i e s remain a valuable source for this intriguing biography, other materials exist that have rarely been looked at over the decades. Of considerable interest are the hundreds of letters Elizabeth's best friend, Mary Anne Bruges, sent to C a na da , an d hu ndreds of Elizabeth's own letters have survived, as well as those of her daughters and sons. From these neglected sources emerges the story of an energetic, involved woman. Her life divides into two phases. As the wife of Joh n G ra ves Si mc oe, E liz abeth is a sensible lady of the Age of Reason, pursuing the picturesque with sketch book and water colours. Following Simcoe's death, her long life as a widow finds meaning in fostering the well-being of her church. " I nter ior - m inor br owni ng in m argins of pages, very faint cigarette odor, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light browning to edges of textblock and covers, small soft corner crease on front cove r. V ery G ood
