FIGHT OR PAY: SOLDIERS' FAMILIES IN THE GREAT WAR., Morton, Desmond.
181 Morton, Desmond. FIGHT OR PAY: SOLDIERS' FAMILIES IN THE GREAT WAR.
UBC Press, Vancouver, 2004, first edition.
326 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0774811080 B&w plates. "Aware that the recruiting effort might fail if men were forced to choose between their families and the front, the Canadian government and its wealthy backers introduced the Canadian Patriotic Fund, known in its day at 'the Patriotic'. Charged with support of soldiers' loved ones, the Patriotic and its volunteers set out to transform them into a middle-class model of frugality and self-denial. At the same time, the Militia Department took on the task of determining which dependants a soldier could or should support. Suddenly, the state and private philanthropists were managing family decisions that had never been their business before. 'Fight or Pay' brings to light the lives of thousands of valiant women whose sacrifices have been overlooked. It is an incisive, humane look at the beginning of a social welfare system that Canadians have come to think of as intrinsic to citizenship. This is a compelling addition to the landscape of Canadian history." Minor wrinkle at top of spine; Christmas notation, place, date and signature in pencil on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good+

THE ART OF CLAIRTONE: THE MAKING OF A DESIGN ICON 1958-1971., Munk, Nina and Gotlieb, Rachel. Foreword by Samantha Sannella.
183 Munk, Nina and Gotlieb, Rachel. Foreword by Samantha Sannella. THE ART OF CLAIRTONE: THE MAKING OF A DESIGN ICON 1958-1971.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart / Design Exchange 2008 0771065078 / 9780771065071 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
171 pp, oblong (9" H x 10 1/4" D). "For a decade, in the 1960s, Clairtone Sound Corporation captured the spirit of the times: sophisticated, cosmopolitan, liberated. From its modern oiled-walnut and teak stereos to its minimalist logos and promotional materials, Clairtone produced a powerful and enduring body of design work. Founded in 1958 by two young Canadians, Peter Munk and David Gilmour, Clairtone quickly became known for its iconic designs and masterful advertising campaigns. Its acclaimed Project G stereo, with its space-age styling, epitomized the Swinging Sixties. Famously, Hugh Hefner owned a Project G. So did Frank Sinatra. Oscar Peterson affirmed that his music sounded as good on a G as it did live. In 1967, suggesting how deeply Clairtone's G series had come to be identified with popular culture, the G2 appeared in 'The Graduate' with Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. With 250 illustrations, including previously unpublished drawings, rare film stills, confidential memoradums, and original photography, (this) is a candid and in-depth look at the company's skyrocketing success - and sensational collapse. Through the recollections of those who knew Claritone best, from its founders to its designers, engineers, and salesmen, and with comments from Karim Rashid, Douglas Coupland, Tyler Brule, and Bruce Mau, among others, this elegant book, published on the 50th anniversary of Clairtone's launch, celebrates an iconoclastic company that once seemed to represent the promise of Canada." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel, soft wrinkling at top of rear flap and at top of front panel.

184 Neatby, H. Blair. WILLIAM LYON MACKENZIE KING. VOLUME III, 1932-1939: THE PRISM OF UNITY. (VOLUME 3).
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1976 0802053815 / 9780802053817 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
366 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Volume 3 only. "(T)reats the depression years when King was first in Opposition and then the years after 1935 when he was once again Prime Minister; it is a masterly analysis of how one of the most enigmatic figures in Canadian history made shrewd and critical political decisions. Attention is paid in turn to his clearly successful tactics as Leader of the Opposition; the election campaign of 1935; a wide range of his domestic policies, including those on unemploy-ment, inflation, relief, and trade; and to a series of international crises - the Ethiopian crisis, the Spanish Civil War, Anschluss, and Munich - that culminated in the Second World War. At all times, King's over-riding concern was to preserve national unity at home and to avoid commitments abroad, either through the British Commonwealth or the League of Nations. We see King in his relations with other Canadian leaders - Aberhart, Pattullo, Hepburn, Duplessis, and Bennett - and with world leaders - Roosevelt, Baldwin, Chamberlain and Hitler. We also see the personal side of the man, and the link between the private and public figure." Book is clean and bright. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

185 Nish, Cameron; Waite, P.B.; Brown, R.C.; Prang, M.E., editors. CANADIAN HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS SERIES - 3 VOLUME SET. VOLUME I. THE FRENCH REGIME. VOLUME II. PRE-CONFEDERATION. VOLUME III. CONFEDERATION TO 1949.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1965 Very Good Good
Three volume set - volumes I & III are hard covers in dust jackets, volume II is soft cover. Volume I: The French Regime - 176 pp, hard cover in dust jacket, 9" H - "(C)ontains a fascinating collection of first-hand accounts by individuals involved in the founding and settling of Canada. Through their own words these men chronicle their ambitions, deeds, and frustrations, from the time of Jacques Cartier's first voyage of exploration in 1534 to the surrender of Montreal to the British in 1760. Consisting mostly of translations from the original French, this book of documents was compiled with the purpose of placing an emphasis on the social and economic aspects of life during the French Regime in Canada." Volume II: Pre-Confederation - 242 pp, soft cover, 8 3/4" H - "(C)overs the history of British North America from the end of the French regime to 1867. Thus the history of Nova Scotia begins with the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713; that of Canada with the Treaty of Paris in 1763. New-foundland I have commenced, a little arbitrarily, in 1713; for the Hudson's Bay Company and the West I have included the Charter of 1670. Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick begin with their official establishment as provinces carved out of the old Province of Nova Scotia, in 1769 and 1784 respect-ively. The basic element in the story illustrated in this book is preforce political and constitutional history (but) at the same time I have tried to present the way various societies in British North America lived and worked." Volume III: Confederation to 1949 - 334 pp, hard cover in dust jacket, 9" H - (A) fascinating collection of first-hand accounts by some of the individuals who were actively involved in the events that led from consolidation of Confederation to Canada in the era of Post World War II. (It) indicates how Confederation was consolidated between 1967 and 1896. The emergence of modern Canada up to 1914 is then discussed. The First World War and the new economy that followed it then leads into the depression, the Second World War and industrialism. In the last part, external affairs are traced from 1914 on and Canada's international position is evaluated." Volume I has small ghost sticker mark on free front endpaper, very light browning on free endpapers, light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, small edge chips and tears, small area of surface paper loss on rear panel, slight fading to spine color, light rubbing, protected in a mylar sleeve. (B)rilliantly details King's close friendship and political bond with Roosevelt; his key role as negotiator for Churchill; and his bizarre meeting and mystical attachment with Hitler. JOHAN SCHRODER'S TRAVELS IN CANADA, 1863., Overland, Orm, editor.

Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1989 0773507183 / 9780773507180 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
168 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)he narrative of two months of travel during the summer of 1863 that took Johan Schroder, a Norwegian gentleman and farmer, through Upper and Lower Canada. Schroder's travels, undertaken with a view to publishing a guide for emigrants, brought Canada to the attention of the Norwegian people. Norwegian shipowners, many of whom were acting as carriers for the timber industry, quickly discovered that their return voyages to Canada could be more profitable if their ships were filled with immigrants instead of ballast. The time was ripe for interest in immigration to Canada when Schroder decided to embark on his tour. (He) was well received in his Canadian travels and managed in two months to see more of the country than most Canadians did in a lifetime. But, despite his warm welcome, he decided to settle in the United States and advised others to do the same. Schroder's account of Canada, which is now published for the first time in English translation, is the only narrative of travel in Upper and Lower Canada by a Scandinavian and one of the very few descriptions of pre-Confederation Canada written by a traveller from outside the English-speaking world. It not only gives us a view of Canada as it appeared to an educated Scandinavian but also sheds light on the reasons why most European emigrants who entered the port of Quebec eventually settled in the United States." Light edge wear, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flapf-folds, minor browning.

Optimum, Montreal, 1989.
202 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0888902220 B&w photographs, reproductions."(A) lighthearted but true-to-life account of Canadian home front living during the war years. When teenaged boys put on uniforms and sailed, flew, and marched off to fight in the Second World War, the teenaged girls they left behind them were in uniform too: a Sloppy Joe sweater, a string of pearls, skirt, bobbysox, and saddleshoes. Meet Mary, one of those girls in a Sloppy Joe sweater; her best friend Cath, and their friends; and follow their fortunes through these six significant years in history that paralleled six of the most formative years of their lives. Through Mary you will learn what they were like; how they passed their time as they waited for the boys to come home; their code of manners and mores; what they talked about at their 'hen parties'; the music and radio programs they listened to; the movies they watched; the books and magazines they read; their fashion 'fads'; their humour; and their contribution to the 'war effort'. Accented by newspaper clippings of the time, the reader gets a chronological review of home and war front news. These vignettes of history reflect the reality of life and death of never to be forgotten days and when juxtaposed with the author's highly entertaining text, the whole forms a record of the times as none other has." 193 Pellerin, Brigitte. DOWN THE ROAD NEVER TRAVELLED.
Breakout Educational Network, Toronto, 2003, first edition.
138 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 1550024221 "With a unique blend of candour and humour, (this book) chronicles the arduous journey Brigitte Pellerin and her fellow researchers undertook in their attempts to track a tax dollar through one government spending program. Imagine coming home one evening and announcing to your significant other that the only way to truly understand how government worked was to study it from the ground up - to literally look into the sewer lines, leaking water mains, pothole-ridden roads and collapsing bridges of Canadian cities. This was Pellerin's goal when she embarked on an investigation of the Canada Infrastructure Works Program (CIWP), a government initiative that promised to repair the country's crumbling infrastructure and create jobs for Canadians. The task, (she) believed, would be relatively easy: to determine whether the government did what it said it would under this program. How hard could that be? As it turned out, it was nearly impossible." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor rubbing. Near Fine

We learn about Richler's opinions on everything from movieland to conspiracy theories, from reincarnation to orgies, and from political wives to male impotence in 14th century France. 200 Rolland, Solange Chaput. Foreword by W.L. Morton. Foreword to French edition by Claude Ryan (here in English). MY COUNTRY, CANADA OR QUEBEC?
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
122 pp, 8 3/4" H. "Mme Rolland writes with passion about Canada on the eve of its Centennial. She talked to provincial premiers, housewives, academics, and journalists, and found an amazing variety of responses. If her question, 'Quebec or Canada?' constantly drives her back to her own history and people, it also produces some surprises about the other so-called Canadians. The west regards the French-English problem as foreign to itself, something for Ontario and Quebec to solve. French-Canadian minorities outside Quebec live in the shadow of Big Brother, the English Canadian. Maritimers and Quebeckers, proud of their provinces and history, look down on each other as parochial. And Toronto, supposedly the heart of English resistance to Quebeckers, seems surprisingly to welcome the French-Canadian assertion. Read this book - find out how a native Quebecoise feels about you, your attitudes, your ignorance, and your indifference towards her, your fellow Canadian. You may grow angry with what she has to say, but you will care more about Canada." Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has two tiny edge tears archivally taped, some small areas of light edge wrinkling, light rubbing and a few tiny scuffs, two tiny dents on rear hinge, small dent/crease on spine.
