THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME III: 1921-1929., Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.)
181 Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.) THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME III: 1921-1929.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1992 0195409361 / 9780195409369 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. The third volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' reveals "Montgomery in mature mid-life, (as) her personal and professional lives are becoming even more complex. (She) juggles the demands of motherhood, parish obligations, indifferent household help, grief at the loss of older friends and family, appeals by her PEI clan for advice and assistance - everyday struggles to balance a woman's social and domestic duties. There are also triumphs and trials more closely related to her position as a best-selling author: growing fame, the successful midwifery of her new heroines 'Emily' and 'Marigold' and a more adult novel, 'The Blue Castle'; the struggle to allocate time for correspondence with publishers, fans, pen-friends - and actually to 'write'. We trace the happy conclusion of her lawsuits against an unscrupulous publisher, and the disappointing outcome of the tempest-in-a-teapot suit arising from a minor automobile accident. There are more personal worries: the Rev. Ewan Macdonald's envy of his wife's publishing and social success; the dark shadow cast by his recurrent attacks of religious melancholia; her concern lest their sons evince similar tendencies. In mid-decade, Ewan Macdonald accepts a call to Norval, Ontario and Montgomery leaves 'dear Leaskdale' with mixed feelings. In these years, LMM turns more and more to her journal to record insights and opinions not voiceable by 'the angel of the house', as well as the brief epiphanies of delight in nature's beauty that have always sustained her. Her journal is an important example of life-writing - writing in the autobiographical mode - by a complex, sensitive, successful, and suprisingly contemporary writer." Minor bumping/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, scattered very tiny foxing marks on edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing.

THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME IV: 1929-1935., Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.)
182 Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.) THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME IV: 1929-1935.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1998 0195413814 / 9780195413816 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
439 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. The fourth volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' "covers a tumultuous period in the writer's life. By 1929 she was 54 years old and known world-wide as the author of 'Anne of Green Gables' and many other books, yet this was also a time of numerous setbacks: the stock market crash, a drop in royalties from her many books, the need to provide her two sons with a university education while her husband's modest church salary was often in arrears, and the fact that many loans she made to friends and family were not repaid. She faced personal crises in relations with her sons and her husband and there was furious controvery in her husband's parish, Norval Presbyterian Church. She also felt concerns over her own mental state and she became the unwilling object of a young woman's declarations of passionate love. Yet this was not a period without joy: the volume opens with happy travels to Prince Edward Island and western Canada and ends with her looking forward with great excitement to a new life in Toronto. Besides providing an intimate look into the daily life of one of the world's best-loved authors, these journals can also be read as a fascinating social history of the early twentieth century. For example, Montgomery's health concerns provide intriguing insights into the state of medical practices. Readers may shudder slightly when a bout of asthma is treated with strychnine tablets or a 'bad chill' brings out a compound of arsenic." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine.

184 Santink, Joy L. TIMOTHY EATON AND THE RISE OF HIS DEPARTMENT STORE.
Toronto University of Toronto 1990 0802027202 / 9780802027207 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
319 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "In 1869, when Timothy Eaton opened his small dry goods store on Yonge Street in Toronto, the term 'department store' was unknown in North America and in Europe. By the 1890s the phrase had entered the language. In Canada, the biggest factor in that change was Eaton himself, an Irish immigrant with little formal education. Twenty years after it opened, his Toronto store was unquestionably the largest and most successful department store in Canada. (This is) a biography of Timothy Eaton which is at the same time a history of the first forty years of the Eaton store in Toronto and an account of the revolutionary changes in the way goods were sold during this period. There were enormous improvements in transportation, communication, and the mass production of goods. Urbanization grew at a tremendous rate; so did the population. This revolution imposed new demands on the retail industry, demands that many merchants at both the wholesale and retail levels chose to ignore. Timothy Eaton did not make that mistake. He used competitive and sometimes hostile markets as tools, rather than obstacles, in his search for sales." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at bottom of spine - minor elsewhere.

ANDRE BIELER: AN ARTIST'S LIFE AND TIMES., Smith, Frances K. Introduction by Michael Bell.
189 Smith, Frances K. Introduction by Michael Bell. ANDRE BIELER: AN ARTIST'S LIFE AND TIMES.
Toronto Merritt 1980 092088606X / 9780920886069 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Andre Bieler.
176 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions, b&w photographs. "This study of the life and work of Andre Bieler, one of Canada's most important living artists, spans eighty-three years of his life and art in Europe, the United States and Canada. It studies him against the flowering of twentieth-century Canadian art, a fascinating history in itself. (S)tarts with (his) birth in Switzerland in 1896, tracing his European family roots, his World War I experiences and his traditional artist's apprenticeship in Europe, his arrival in Canada as a young artist and subsequent exploration of the rural 'habitant' way of life in Quebec's L'ile d'Orleans and on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Most important, the author shows us the extraordinary creative energy of Andre Bieler, his exuberance and intense love of people and life that, even in his eighties, keep him experimenting in art, traveling across Canada, Europe and Mexico in search of his subject, and which define him as an artist of classic, versatile and sustained talent." Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, 1" faint line indentation on front panel, tiny dent/closed perforation on rear hinge.

191 Snow, Hank. With Jack Ownbey and Bob Burris. THE HANK SNOW STORY.

555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.

Toronto Lester & Orpen Dennys 1987 0886191033 / 9780886191030 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
306 pp, 9 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "On the night of 12 May 1944, Major Colin Scott Dafoe, a surgeon on special assignment with Britain's SOE parachuted behind enemy lines into German-occupied Yugoslavia. His mission, code-named 'Toffee', was to provide medical aid to the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia: the ragtag band of unsung heroes who were Marshal Tito's Partisans. Dafoe, a native of Madoc, Ontario, was no stranger to combat - he had served with the British 8th Army in Tobruk and El Alamein in North Africa - but nothing he had experienced in the deserts of Africa had prepared him for the war in occupied Yugoslavia. The hit-and-run tactics of guerrilla fighting in mountainous terrain made a mockery of conventional medical procedures, but Dafoe was a devoted and ingenious surgeon who put his skills to the test time and time again, despite incredible hardship and danger. In an operating room constructed from parachutes, Dafoe operate on the maimed and wounded, who were brought from miles around to receive his expert attention." Tiny wrinkle at top of rear hinge. THE STORMS BELOW: THE TURBULENT LIFE AND TIMES OF HUGH GARNER., Stuewe, Paul.
193 Stuewe, Paul. THE STORMS BELOW: THE TURBULENT LIFE AND TIMES OF HUGH GARNER.
Toronto James Lorimer 1988 155028150X / 9781550281507 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
230 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Hugh Garner was one of Canada's most popular and controversial writers. He was also a controversial human being, a hard-drinking, opinionated tough guy who fought with editors, publishers and everyone else he considered part of the Establishment. Yet beneath this brash, angry exterior, Garner was a writer of sensitive short stories and a novel, 'Cabbagetown', that has become a Canadian classic. Garner's stories were drawn from his own rough, adventurous life. During the 1930s Garner ran away from a pinched, impoverished childhood in Toronto's working-class Cabbagetown to ride the rails across Canada and the United States. He fought in the Spanish Civil War and with the Canadian navy in the Second World War. Transformed from a radical to a cantankerous, free-spirited conservative in the 1950s, Garner won fame and fortune as a successful journalist, novelist and short story writer. However, as his alcoholism deepened, his escapades became more self-destructive and his attitude to life increasingly bitter. A definitive biography of a unique Canadian writer, drawing on extensive interviews with Garner's family, friends and colleagues, 'The Storms Below' has the excitement and emotional impact of a good Garner novel." Small light tape marks on endpapers, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, soiling on bottom edge of both boards. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.

"General Andrew George Latta McNaughton, P.C., C.H., C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., was a patriot who served his country diligently as scientist, inventor, soldier and stateman for more than half a century. His full-time military career began with his enlistment in the Canadian Field Artillery, where his skill and ingenuity as a gunner earned him, by the war's end, the rank of brigadier-general and command of the Canadian Corps Heavy Artillery. His interest in science resulted in the invention of the cathode ray direction finder - the direct forerunner of radar - in 1923. (Volume 2) describes McNaughton's career in the Second World War from his appointment as Inspector General of the troops mobilizing to form the 1st Canadian Division until the end of 1943, when he was removed from command of the First Canadian Army. McNaughton had antagonized (General Sir Alan) Brooke by his unceasing fight for Canadian autonomy. (Canadian Defence Minister) Ralston undermined his position by detaching a corps and sending it to Italy. With that policy established, McNaughton said, it would be better for Ralston to put someone in charge who believed in it; he himself did not. Nor could McNaughton have served under Montgomery after the latter, in highhanded fashion, had refused McNaughton access to his own troops in Sicily. (Volume 3) begins with McNaughton's return from the overseas command in 1944, (following his career as governor-general, Minister of Defence,) delegate to the United Nations and member of its Security Council and Atomic Energy Commission; he was president of the Canadian half of the Canadian-U.S. Joint Board of Defence; and he was chairman of the Canadian section of the International Joint Commission, a body established to deal with water problems between Canada and the United States." 343 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and color illustrations. "Frederick Horsman Varley was a binge drinker, a womanizer, and spendthrift. He was also a charter member of Canada's most famous band of painters, the Group of Seven, and in his own right, one of the country's finest and most inventive artists. He is best known for the landscape paintings that were his chief contribution to the Group of Seven exhibitions. Of these, 'Stormy Weather, Georgian Bay', may be the most widely recognized and admired. But Varley's work, taken as a whole, is far from typical of the Group's output, and his tempest-tossed life gives quite a different meanting to the title of his signature painting. This, the first authoritative biography of Varley, is based on a wealth of original research." Minor wrinkle at bottom of front hinge. "In nearly 200 biographical entries, thirty-seven contributors discuss most of the novelists, poets, playwrights, historians, and other writers who have published significantly from the beginning of 1967 to the end of 1972. Books and periodicals (in both English and French) are described in bibliographical articles under Anthologies, Belles Lettres, Children's Books, Drama, Eskimos, Fiction, Folklore, History Studies, Indians, Indian Legends and Art, Literary Magazines, Literary Studies, Poetry, Political Writings, and Translations. While the author entries provide an essential source of information about the leading writers, the bibliographical articles are an organized round-up of publications that will prove illuminating and invaluable to those readers who have only an uncertain knowledge of just what books have become available since 1967. Of all the discoveries that can be made in this 'Supplement', perhaps the most striking and important for the English-speaking reader are the extent and nature of the literary flowering that has taken place in French Canada, here described in detail for the first time in English." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny stain in text of page 89. Dust jacket has wrinkling at bottom of the spine and at top of front flap area, one tiny edge tear and two tiny edge chips.
