A PAINTBRUSH IN MY HAND., Odjig, Daphne. Through R.M. Vanderburgh and M.E. Southcott.
181 Odjig, Daphne. Through R.M. Vanderburgh and M.E. Southcott. A PAINTBRUSH IN MY HAND.

174 pp, 10 3/4" H. B&w photographs, colour and b&w reproductions. "Throughout (this book) Daphne Odjig's story has been told by herself as related through R.M. Vanderburgh and M.E. Southcott. As a product of an oral tradition that was still flourishing during her childhood in the village of Wikwemikong on Manitoulin Island in Georgian Bay, Daphne became a superb storyteller, in the tradition of her elders. It is this inheritance that she has built on as she told her stories to her two collaborators. Odjig's skills as a storyteller are reflected in the impressionistic introductions to many of the chapters. Her lively expresion of events and activities in her life come vividly alive for Vanderburgh who has maintained as much as possible the authenticity of Odjig's narratives and tried to pass these impressions along to the reader. Odjig's skill in visual communication is evident in the paintings reproduced here. Southcott has tried to pass on to the reader the thoughts and emotions the artist experienced in the creation of these paintings." Tiny repaired tear at bottom of front inside hinge, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump to bottom corner of each board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing, small tear on front panel near hinge - archivally taped, tiny dent on front hinge, tiny sticker removal mark on front panel.

183 Oliver, Peter. G. HOWARD FERGUSON: ONTARIO TORY.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1977 0802033466 / 9780802033468 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Inscribed By Author
501 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "For John Watson, / with my very best wishes, / Peter Oliver". "As premier of Ontario from 1923 to 1930, G. Howard Ferguson was the most successful, the most colourful, and perhaps the ablest of Canadian politicians of his time. Largely as a result of his leadership, the Ontario Tories emerged from the debacle of their 1919 defeat to eliminate virtually all political opposition - and launch the Conservative dynasty in Ontario. Peter Oliver's study of Ferguson's life and times provides both a revealing picture of a political professional of driving ambition and rare talent and a commentary on a largely rural society dealing with the challenges of industrialization and urbanization." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, light edge browning, one very small tear archivally taped some rubbing with color loss at bottom of spine.

Although one of the author's illustrious forebears appeared for the prosecution, E.B. 430 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and colour photographs. "(A)n account of the life and cultural contribution of one of Canada's most talented conductors. Born in 1924, he made his Toronto Symphony conducting debut at the age of eighteen. He went on to become the artistic director of the Winnipeg Symphony, a conductor with the Toronto Symphony, and a guest conductor of virtually every major symphony orchestra in Canada. Feldbrill was also the first conductor-in-residence at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, from 1968 to 1982. However, what really set Feldbrill apart was his limitless enthusiasm and support of Canadian music and young musicians, as well as his insistence on playing the music of Canadian composers despite the reluctance of some orchestral managers and the initial opposition of audiences at the time. In doing so he reached out to young people and trained many to take their places as members of Canadian orchestras from coast to coast." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

320 pp, square large 8vo (9" x 9"). B&w photographs. "Beginning with the first Jewish settler, Moses David, the important role that Windsor Jews played in the development of Ontario's south is mirrored in this 200-year chronicle. The founding pioneer families transformed their Eastern European shtetl into a North American settlement; many individuals were involved in establishing synagogues, schools, and an organized communal structure in spite of divergent religious, political, and economic interests. Modernity and the growing influence of Zionism and Conservative/Reform Judaism challenged the traditional and leftist leanings of the community's founders. From the outset, Jews were represented in city council, actively involved in communal organizations, and appointed to judical posts. While its Jewish population was small, Windsor boasted Canada's first Jewish Cabinet members, provincially and federally, in David Croll and Herb Gray. As the new millenium approached, Jews faced shrinking numbers, forcing major consolidations in order to ensure their survival." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor wrinkle at top of spine.

Whether surveying the international literary scene or considering the excesses of pop psychology, Mordecai Richler attacks his diverse subjects with relish and devastating wit. We learn about Richler's opinions on everything from movieland to conspiracy theories, from reincarnation to orgies, and from political wives to male impotence in 14th century France. But there is another side to Richler - a kinder, gentler man who celebrates marriage and friendship, fatherhood and harmony. In a mellow mood, Richler meditates on the joys of reading, the power of fiction, and the great rewards of a profession in writing." Very minor edge wear, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. JEAN I. GUNN: NURSING LEADER. CANADIAN MEDICAL LIVES SERIES., Rieger, Natalie.
197 Rieger, Natalie. JEAN I. GUNN: NURSING LEADER. CANADIAN MEDICAL LIVES SERIES.
Asociated Medical Services / Fitzhenry & Whiteside, Markham, Ontario, 1997.
264 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550411756 B&w photographs. "In 1913 Jean Gunn, a native of Belleville who trained at the prestigious New York Presbyterian Hospital, became the Superintendant of Nurses at the Toronto General Hospital. For more than a quarter of a century she gave her energy and time to numerous nursing and health issues and the nursing service at the Toronto General. Recognized as a leader by nurses, doctors, politicians and hospital trustees, she manoeuvred around obstructions with humour, diplomacy, persistence and a fine sense of justice. Her contribution shows that the nursing profession achieved success despite the hierarchical, paternal and oppressive attitudes and behaviour of hospital trustees, medical doctors and politcians towards the nursing profession. Her story delineates the ambivalence which nurses had in working with other women on issues which were not related directly to nursing. It describes the respect with which Gunn was held by colleagues and her students at the General. Her achievements provide an alternative to the traditional interpretation of nursing's history as being oppressed and under patriarchal control, striving unsuccessfully to become a profession. What Gunn and her nurse colleagues accomplished in her life is relevant to today's problems in the health care system. We must know of those struggles before we lose the gains they fought for." Toronto Natural Heritage 2009 1550028626 / 9781550028621 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
236 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Chronicling the history of Black families of the Yarmouth area of Nova Scotia, (this book) is a mirror image of the hopes and despairs and the achievements and injustices that mark the early stories of many African-Canadians. This extensively researched history traces the lives of those people, still enslaved at the time, who arrived with the influx of Black Loyalists and landed in Shelburne in 1783, as well as those who had come with their masters as early as 1767. Their migration to a new home did little to improve their overall living conditions, a situation that would persist for many years throughout Yarmouth County. By drawing on a comprehen-sive range of sources that include census and cemetery records, church and school histories, libraries, museums, oral histories, newspapers, wills, 'The Black Loyalist Directory', and many others, this is a history that has been overlooked for far too long. "One of Canada's first scientific explorers, Joseph Burr Tyrrell began his career in the late nineteenth century by surveying the Rocky Mountains on foot and mapping remote northern regions from a birchbark canoe; he ended it at the dawn of the Atomic Age, flying across the wilderness in bush planes. Among his many accomplishments, Tyrrell discovered Canada's first dinosaur, Albertosaurus, and an Ice Age glacier he named Keewatin. He risked his own and his companions' lives charting the Dubawnt and Kazan river networks west of Hudson Bay, and rescued the maps and records of Canada's great geographer, David Thompson, from oblivion.
