343 pp, 8vo 8 3/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1853670030 B&w maps/battle plans, reproductions. "(A) classic eyewitness account of the Anglo-Zulu War. The author was a man of action and a writer who had remarkable insight into contemporar y attitudes. His account of the first phase of the famous campaign is the only one by a professional journalist, and it includes descriptions of the massacre at Isandlwana and the heroic defence of Rorke's Drift. As Special Correspondent for th e L ondon 'Standard', (he) joined Lord Chelmsford's Centre Column and attached himself to the officers of the Natal Native Contingent. He was the first man across when the column entered Zulu territory on 11 January, and he witnessed the opening s ho t s of the campaign at the storming of Sihayo's Kraal. When Lord Chelmsford set out on reconnaissance from the doomed camp at Islandlwana on the 22nd, Norris-Newman was with him; he gives a vivid and powerful account of the events of that day, c ulm in at ing in the return to the site of the massacre and a night spent camped among the dead. (He) also witnessed the aftermath of Rorke's Drift, later accompanying the Eshowe Relief column. Present at the battle of Gingindhlovu, he was the fir st m an to reach the besieged garrison. Originally published in 1880, (this book) has been the foundation for many subsequent studies of the Zulu campaign and presents the full contemporary record." 456 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "November 11, 1918. The final hours pulsate with tension as every man in the trenches hopes to escape the melancholy distinction of being the last to die in World War I. The Allied generals knew the fighting would end precisely at 11:00 a.m., yet in the final hours they flung men against an already beaten Germany. The result? Eleven thousand casualties suffered - more than during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Why? Allied commanders wanted to punish the enemy to the very last moment, and career officers saw a fast-fading chance for glory and promotion. (The author) puts the reader in the trenches with the forgotten and the famous - among the latter, Corporal Adolf Hitler, Captain Harry Truman, and Colonels Douglas MacArthur and George Patton. Mainly, though, he follows ordinary soldiers' lives, illuminating their fate as the end approaches." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine; Christmas notation, place, date and signature written in pencil on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - slight wrinkling at top/bottom of flap-folds.

DAILY LIFE IN HOLLAND IN THE YEAR 1566 AND THE STORY OF MY ANCESTOR'S TREASURE CHEST., Poortvliet, Rien. Translated from the Dutch by Karin H. Ford. Calligraphy by Diane Lynch.
169 Poortvliet, Rien. Translated from the Dutch by Karin H. Ford. Calligraphy by Diane Lynch. DAILY LIFE IN HOLLAND IN THE YEAR 1566 AND THE STORY OF MY ANCESTOR'S TREASURE CHEST.
Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1992, first American edition.
208 pp, oblong (10 1/4" H x 12 1/8" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0810933098 Beautifully illustrated in colour throughout. "Characteristically evocative, the words and images in 'Daily Life in Holland' are rich in detail and delicate in colo ration, and perhaps the most beautiful of any of Poortvliet's works to date. In this fascinating saga, he recreates the lives of his forebears as they toiled and celebrated their way through daily existence. He does not conjure up a romantic v i s i o n of the past - the Dutch countryside was not all tulips and windmills! There were adversity and hard work, and we learn that 1566 was an extraordinary year in Holland, marked by famine and plague, great freezes, floods and droughts, comets a nd e ar thquakes, and an invasion by the Spanish as well. Poortvliet's colorful account unfolds before us to reveal how ordinary men, women, and children lived: what kinds of clothes they wore, what their houses were like, what they ate and how th ey coo ked . How did they celebrate Christmas? What did the people do for a livng and what kind of money did they have? What did a girl's engagement ring look like? How many different kinds of swords and firearms did they have? Exploring hi s ow n r oots , Po ortvliet captures the beauty of everyday life and livelihood in turbulent sixteenth-century Holland." Tiny stain on top of text block, a few tiny dints on bottom edges of boards, previous owner's signed bookplate on half-title pa ge. Dust jack et ha s very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few tiny dints on front panel, very light rubbing, very small bump on edge of spine. Thus begins the story of Tsoko, of his adventures and misadventures in the wild and in the strange world of humans. And as this tale unfolds, there is the remarkable, almost magical relationship with his black friend Wordsworth, a gentle man gifted with a love for animals and the natural world...(this book) tells with tenderness, understanding and touches of fantasy, of the problems arising for people who acquire a wild animal pet, and not least for the animal itself which has to submit to human choices. It also con t a i n s m any facts about vervets, the most common species of monkey in Zimbabwe, and wildlife conservation in general. A WESTMINSTER CHILDHOOD., Raynor, John. Illustrated by Dennis Flanders.
173 Raynor, John. Illustrated by Dennis Flanders. A WESTMINSTER CHILDHOOD.
Cassell, London, 1973, first edition.
213 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0304291838 B&w illustrations. "When John Raynor, composer of nearly seven hundred song settings, died so tragically in a road accident in 1970, he left behind not only his lifetime's musical work, but the manuscript of this enchanting account of the years of his childhood. His father was Arthur Guy Sandars Raynor, a famous Master of the King's Scholars at Westminster School, and the young John spent his earliest years in the g r e y p r e s ence of London's great Abbey. History and tradition were the day-long companions of the perceptive, sensitive child, who indeed was born at No. 3, Little Dean's Yard, 'that inmost court of an inner court, the quietest and dreamies t p la ce i n L on do n' . But there were sounds and colours and images that were to stay with him all his life and which he recorded so evocatively in this book: the brilliant-hued flowers of Westminster's secluded gardens; the magic of first h ea rin g t he Abb ey 's glo rio us organ; the clocks of London that became a lifelong passion; nursery fires and braziers; his mother's jewel case and his father's butterfly case, full of dazzling, glittering, shimmering things to feast a child's ey es. Te rror an d sa dne ss also cas t their shadows, to persist into later life: a haunted bedroom which drove the five-year-old boy to the brink of a nervous breakdown; the nameless, primitive horror borne on the wind from a tannery; the dreade d ch urch door whic h pro ved to have had h um an skin nailed to it; the death of a brother, killed in the holocaust of 1918. This is a quiet, gentle book, written by a gentle man whose love for the England that he knew shines as surely in these 'r ecoll ectio ns in tran quilit y' o f a happ y, com ple te childhood at the beginning of the century as it does in the songs by which he has so greatly enriched English music." Light fading at top edge of spine and at part of rear board, very smal l ligh t stai n on b ottom of text block , ve ry min or edge wea r. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling and wear at top of spine and flap-folds, light fading to spine color, one small and one tiny closed tear. Very Good/Very Good
