THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS., Moore, Clement C.
163 Moore, Clement C. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS.
New York Alfred A. Knopf 1984 0394868633 / 9780394868639 4th Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Anita Lobel.
Unpaginated, 10 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, charmingly illustrated in full colour throughout. "Though Clement C. Moore wrote the poem in New York City, most artists place it in an idyllic country setting. Now the Cadecott Medal winning artist, Anita Lobel, returns the poem to the city and brings to her illustrations the warmth and glowing detail that reflect her own affection for her city as it looked and felt in the late nineteenth century. With rows of rooftops and chimneys, the ornate interior of the sleeping house, and a miniature St. Nick coursing through the nighttime sky over a majestic bridge and a silent city, she has created a haunting Victorian vision of the Christmas classic." Faint marks from erased pencilled name on verso of front free endpaper, minor wrinkle at bottom of spine, very minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds - minor elsewhere with one or two tiny tears, small tear with crease at bottom of rear hinge.

E. NESBIT: A BIOGRAPHY. REVISED WITH NEW MATERIAL., Moore, Doris Langley.
167 Moore, Doris Langley. E. NESBIT: A BIOGRAPHY. REVISED WITH NEW MATERIAL.
Philadelphia Chilton Books 1966 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good -
313 pp, 8 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Publication of this first biography ever written about E. Nesbit (1858-1924), whose books for children have delighted readers young and old, is a literary event of major importance. Mrs. Langley Moore has written a new introduction to the present edition, telling a number of things that had to be omitted from the original work, when so many of E. Nesbit's contemporaries or members of her family were still alive. Also, the entire book has been revised and relevant material that either had to be left out originally, or has been discovered since, has been added. Edith Nesbit married Hubert Bland, a young journalist and enthusiastic Socialist, in 1880. He took the chair at the first meeting of the Fabian Society and both were active in the Fabian movement. When Bland, while ill, was defrauded by a business partner, Edith Nesbit was forced to earn the family's living. She began to write poems, short stories, and recitiations, and made hand painted Christmas cards. After fifteen years of literary hack work, in which she produced some thirty-three books, she hit her stride with the writing of 'The Treasure Seekers', the first of the stories about the irrepressible Bastable children. Among the other books that have made her a household favorite are 'The Wouldbegoods', 'Five Children and It', 'The House of Arden', and 'The Story of the Amulet'. (The author) has given us a remarkable portrait of the genesis of a writer, and the writer's world. In seeking out her information she contacted many of the most eminent literary and theatrical figures in England at the time." Minor toning to margins of pages, light toning and faint foxing mark on fore-edge of text block, minor soiling on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, general light browning - more on spine and flap-folds, one very small edge tear sticker removal/soiling mark at top corner of front panel, very small foxing mark on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

FIGHT OR PAY: SOLDIERS' FAMILIES IN THE GREAT WAR., Morton, Desmond.
168 Morton, Desmond. FIGHT OR PAY: SOLDIERS' FAMILIES IN THE GREAT WAR.
UBC Press, Vancouver, 2004, first edition.
326 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0774811080 B&w plates. "Aware that the recruiting effort might fail if men were forced to choose between their families and the front, the Canadian government and its wealthy backers introduced the Canadian Patriotic Fund, known in its day at 'the Patriotic'. Charged with support of soldiers' loved ones, the Patriotic and its volunteers set out to transform them into a middle-class model of frugality and self-denial. At the same time, the Militia Department took on the task of determining which dependants a soldier could or should support. Suddenly, the state and private philanthropists were managing family decisions that had never been their business before. 'Fight or Pay' brings to light the lives of thousands of valiant women whose sacrifices have been overlooked. It is an incisive, humane look at the beginning of a social welfare system that Canadians have come to think of as intrinsic to citizenship. This is a compelling addition to the landscape of Canadian history." Minor wrinkle at top of spine; Christmas notation, place, date and signature in pencil on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good+

169 Mowat, Farley SIBIR: MY DISCOVERY OF SIBERIA.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1972 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Good- Signed by Author
313 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). Map endpapers, 2 b&w maps. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON HALF TITLE PAGE. "In over 29,000 miles of Siberian travel over mountains, steppes, taiga and tundra, the author visited regions not seen by any westerner since 1917, including the diamond mines at Mirny; the golden Kolyma; the new Leningrad; and Tchersky, once the most remote place of exile in all Russia but now a burgeoning new city on the shores of the Arctic Ocean. Lively, anecdotal, highly personal, Mowat's graphic prose brings to life a people who share the top of the world with us, their hopes and aspirations, their humour, their dedication to the dramatic awakening of 'Sibir' - The Sleeping Land." The author was a man of action and a writer who had remarkable insight into contemporar y attitudes. His account of the first phase of the famous campaign is the only one by a professional journalist, and it includes descriptions of the massacre at Isandlwana and the heroic defence of Rorke's Drift. As Special Correspondent for th e L ondon 'Standard', (he) joined Lord Chelmsford's Centre Column and attached himself to the officers of the Natal Native Contingent. He was the first man across when the column entered Zulu territory on 11 January, and he witnessed the opening s ho t s of the campaign at the storming of Sihayo's Kraal. When Lord Chelmsford set out on reconnaissance from the doomed camp at Islandlwana on the 22nd, Norris-Newman was with him; he gives a vivid and powerful account of the events of that day, c ulm in at ing in the return to the site of the massacre and a night spent camped among the dead. (He) also witnessed the aftermath of Rorke's Drift, later accompanying the Eshowe Relief column. Present at the battle of Gingindhlovu, he was the fir st m an to reach the besieged garrison. Originally published in 1880, (this book) has been the foundation for many subsequent studies of the Zulu campaign and presents the full contemporary record." 456 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "November 11, 1918. The final hours pulsate with tension as every man in the trenches hopes to escape the melancholy distinction of being the last to die in World War I. The Allied generals knew the fighting would end precisely at 11:00 a.m., yet in the final hours they flung men against an already beaten Germany. The result? Eleven thousand casualties suffered - more than during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Why? Allied commanders wanted to punish the enemy to the very last moment, and career officers saw a fast-fading chance for glory and promotion.
