THE REGENCY STYLE, 1800 TO 1830., Pilcher, Donald.
161 Pilcher, Donald. THE REGENCY STYLE, 1800 TO 1830.
London B.T. Batsford 1947 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
120 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, drawings, colour frontispiece, wraparound dust jacket illustration. "J.B. Papworth, James Malton, J.C. Loudon, Humphrey Repton, Sidney Smirke, Sir John Soane - these are a few of the contemporary designers whom Donald Pilcher quotes in his fascinating enquiry which, on account of its emphasis on town-planning and on the marriage between town and country, has a special relevance to us today. There are chapters on, inter alia, The Man of Taste, on The Landscape Garden, on Taste and Technique, and on Town and Country. The subject is one which lends itself particularly well to illustration, both from the books of the time and from the magnificent villas, crescents, terraces and squares which remain to us as a legacy of the period." Two creases and a tiny edge tear (archivally taped) at top corner of rear free endpaper, very small bump at top fore-edge of boards, tiny stain on fore-edge of text block, minor edge wear to boards, some slight fading to colour on top of text block. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine and at top edge

DAILY LIFE IN HOLLAND IN THE YEAR 1566 AND THE STORY OF MY ANCESTOR'S TREASURE CHEST., Poortvliet, Rien. Translated from the Dutch by Karin H. Ford. Calligraphy by Diane Lynch.
163 Poortvliet, Rien. Translated from the Dutch by Karin H. Ford. Calligraphy by Diane Lynch. DAILY LIFE IN HOLLAND IN THE YEAR 1566 AND THE STORY OF MY ANCESTOR'S TREASURE CHEST.
Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1992, first American edition.
208 pp, oblong (10 1/4" H x 12 1/8" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0810933098 Beautifully illustrated in colour throughout. "Characteristically evocative, the words and images in 'Daily Life in Holland' are rich in detail and delicate in colo ration, and perhaps the most beautiful of any of Poortvliet's works to date. In this fascinating saga, he recreates the lives of his forebears as they toiled and celebrated their way through daily existence. He does not conjure up a romantic v i s i o n of the past - the Dutch countryside was not all tulips and windmills! There were adversity and hard work, and we learn that 1566 was an extraordinary year in Holland, marked by famine and plague, great freezes, floods and droughts, comets a nd e ar thquakes, and an invasion by the Spanish as well. Poortvliet's colorful account unfolds before us to reveal how ordinary men, women, and children lived: what kinds of clothes they wore, what their houses were like, what they ate and how th ey coo ked . How did they celebrate Christmas? What did the people do for a livng and what kind of money did they have? What did a girl's engagement ring look like? How many different kinds of swords and firearms did they have? Exploring hi s ow n r oots , Po ortvliet captures the beauty of everyday life and livelihood in turbulent sixteenth-century Holland." Tiny stain on top of text block, a few tiny dints on bottom edges of boards, previous owner's signed bookplate on half-title pa ge. Dust jack et ha s very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few tiny dints on front panel, very light rubbing, very small bump on edge of spine. ST PAUL'S IN ITS GLORY: A CANDID HISTORY OF THE CATHEDRAL, 1831-1911., Prestige, G.L.
166 Prestige, G.L. ST PAUL'S IN ITS GLORY: A CANDID HISTORY OF THE CATHEDRAL, 1831-1911.
S.P.C.K., London, 1955, first edition.
262 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "When Sydney Smith was admitted to a Canonry at St Paul's in October, 1831 'the two most conspicuous features of the Cathedral were vast emptiness and encompassing dirt'. The eighty y ears which followed, until Gregory relinquished the deanery in 1911, were a period of immense changes in the life, operation, and embellishment of St Paul's. To every aspect of this reformation the author has brought a thorough knowledge o f C a t h e d r al records, fine judgement, and agility in exposition. Much of the work is necessarily concerned with the mechanics of operating a great Church. Here and throughout the book the treatment is not only lucid but entertaining....As w el l a s le ar ni ng t o understand the problems of Cathedral finance or the organization of the Choir School, we discover, for example, how the restive horses of Queen Victoria's carriage were pacified during the Diamond Jubilee Service of 189 7. Dr P res ti ge' s s tud ies of the remarkable men who guided and served the affairs of St Paul's in these years show real depth and insight." Profusely illustrated in b&w and color with photos, reproductions, plans, elevations, etc. "(O)pens with an uninhibited view of the institutional history of the state college. A vivd narrative history of University College and its place in the municipal and social life of Victorian Toronto follows. The heart of the book is an architectural history of the University. This spans eight decades and is illustrated by many of the various architects' own drawings (almost none of which have ever been reproduced before). In the third chapter Richardson deals with the little-known and ambitious earlier projects of Charles Fowler, John Howard and Thomas Young, which were intended to provide splendidly for the University of King's College. Next he focuses on the grand design drawn up by Cumberland & Storm for its successor, University College (and the University of Toronto) in 1856, and then on (to) the realization of those plans in U.C. The last chapter brings the story down to the opening years of the twentieth century, including the development of the campus around the College, the fire that gutted most of it in 1890, and the reconstruction within the surviving shell under D .B. Dick." A few very small bumps to edges of front board, two very small light stains on fore-edge of textblock, very light edge wear. ROYAL PALACES: WINDSOR CASTLE - A SHORT HISTORY., Robinson, John Martin.
175 Robinson, John Martin. ROYAL PALACES: WINDSOR CASTLE - A SHORT HISTORY.
Michael Joseph / Royal Collection, London, 1996.
144 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071814158X Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "Continuously used by British monarchs since the Middle Ages, Windsor Castle is an architectural epitome of the nation's history. Its sk yline of battlements, turrets and the great Round Tower is instantly recognizable throughout the world. In this book, which includes over 150 colour illustrations, architectural historian John Martin Robinson describes the history of this mo s t s p l e n did and significant of European royal palaces. From its beginnings as a Norman defensive fortification, medieval expansion converted the Castle into a vast Gothic palace, of which St George's Chapel is the principal surviving archite ct ur a l gl or y. Charles II reconstructed the Upper Ward, employing architect Hugh May and craftsmen such as Verrio and Grinling Gibbons to create new baroque state apartments. With subsequent remodelling by George IV and his architect Jeffry Wy atv ill e, t his wa s t r ansformed again into a truly magnificent palace that became the principal seat of the monarchy. In Queen Victoria's reign the social life of the Castle settled into a pattern which is familiar today. Windsor is the sett ing for roy al fami ly l ife, s tate visits of foreign monarchs and the annual celebration of the Order of the Garter, one of the oldest orders of Christian chivalry, and one with which the Castle is specially associated. This fascinating story of the Cas tle inc ludes the acqui sit ion by successive monarchs of its artistic treasures, such as the Old Master drawings and French decorative art, that now form an incomparable part of the Royal Collection." ISBN 0901897191 "Externally, the Fishermen's Chapel is a plain, rectangular structure with no sign of ornamentation or suggestion of the glory that it holds within. But once inside, the visitor is confronted with an experience of unparalleled delight: the walls and the stone-vaulted ceiling are covered with Old and New Testament scenes, executed in bright colours. For more than six hundred years these medieval paintings have survived the ravages of time and man, and although they are now far from complete, their impact is nevertheless stunning: the message they conveyed to medieval worshippers is still there to be read today. Between 1982 and 1988, an integrated programme of research and investigation, conservation and repair, refurbishment and revitalization, took place with an interdisciplinary and internationally recruited team. The results of their findings have now been distilled and are presented in this volume." 160 pp, 11 1/4" H. Marbled-pattern endpapers, color and b&w photographs, floor plans. This book "is for everyone interested in America's early Colonial homes but it is especially for those hoping to build or remodel an attractive, livable, comfortable and reasonably authentic Saltbox or Cape. (It) gives the six best ways to do this. But for you to do it in the charming tradition of our ancestors, you must first have a fairly complete understanding and appreciation of the original Saltboxes and Capes. You should know how they have changed and developed over the years. Despite the distinctive design and great age of the Saltbox, or Catslide, house - it was first built in America in about 1650 and goes back three centuries before that in England - this is the first book ever to discuss it fully. The equally old Cape Cod house is covered in the same way. (Approximately 140 houses are featured), half saltboxes, half Capes. Half are antique, half have been built in the past fifty years." 176 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297796267 B&w photographs, drawings. "Much has been written about the great houses of Britain - their architecture, art and gardens, and the frivolous lives that were lived there. Ye t little is known about the contributions they made to the war effort between 1939 and 1945, and the sometimes terrible price they paid. Their role was vital; preserving human lives, providing retreats for the wounded or dispossessed, guardi n g t h e nation's treasures. Drawing on personal memories and contemporary news and magazine stories, Caroline Seebohm gives a vivid picture of a very different life in the British country house. The details which colour the book are touching, fu nn y , oc ca s ionally horrifying, and many ordeals, suffered particularly by women left holding the fort, are revealed here for the first time..."
