THE TRADITIONAL HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTIC SKETCHES OF THE OJIBWAY NATION., Copway, G. (George), or, Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh, Chief of the Ojibway Nation.
161 Copway, G. (George), or, Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh, Chief of the Ojibway Nation. THE TRADITIONAL HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTIC SKETCHES OF THE OJIBWAY NATION.
Toronto Prospero 2001 1552671801 / 9781552671801 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
298 pp, 8vo (8 7/8" H). "Numerically the largest group of Native North Americans, the Ojibway were the first to have a history written by one of their own people. Published in 1850, its author, George Copway, or Kah-ge-g a-gah-bowh, had already achieved a certain amount of fame delivering passionate lectures in North America and Europe. Attired in traditional Ojibway dress, Copway held up the virtues of tribal life while promoting mid-nineteenth-century ideas on education. Arguing for a separate Native North American state, Copway garnered considerable support from both Natives and non-Natives. (This), Copway's finest book, is in many ways a summation of his lectures. Written primarily for a non- Native audience, Copway viewed the book as an attempt to 'awaken a deeper feeling' toward the people of the First Nations. Much more than a history, the work in an exploration of Ojibway culture through which Copway had sought to induce the British and American governments to greater efforts in improving their relationships with Native North Americans." 177 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(R)econstructs America's first era of manned flight and brings back to life the famous and less-known aviators who became the nation's heroes: Charles Lindberg, whose achievement was the great event of the 1920s - Amelia Earhart, one of the many women 'aces' (the aviation industry encouraged women because, as pilot Louise Thaden put it, 'If a woman can handle a plane, the public thinks it must be 'duck soup' for men.') - Calbraith P. Rogers, who made the first transcontinental flight, surviving a dozen crashes, a broken arm and collarbone, and a score of wounds caused by the metal fragments of an exploded engine - and many others. The book provides a vivid picture of America in the first half of the century - its aspirations and concerns - as expressed in the exuberant and often utopian response to a major new technology." A TREASURY OF AFRO-AMERICAN FOLKLORE: THE ORAL LITERTURE, TRADITIONS, RECOLLECTIONS, LEGENDS, TALES, SONGS, RELIGIOUS BELIEFS, CUSTOMS, SAYINGS, AND HUMOR OF PEOPLES OF AFRICAN DESCENT IN THE AMERICAS., Courlander, Harold.
164 Courlander, Harold. A TREASURY OF AFRO-AMERICAN FOLKLORE: THE ORAL LITERTURE, TRADITIONS, RECOLLECTIONS, LEGENDS, TALES, SONGS, RELIGIOUS BELIEFS, CUSTOMS, SAYINGS, AND HUMOR OF PEOPLES OF AFRICAN DESCENT IN THE AMERICAS.
New York SMITHMARK 1996 0765197332 / 9780765197337 Hard Cover Very Good Near Fine Enrico Arno.
618 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w decorations by Enrico Arno, b&w photographs, musical notations. "(A) notable milestone in the collection and presentation of oral literature and traditions from black communities in the Western Hemisphere. It demonstrates the powerful cultural influence of Africa on this side of the Atlantic. (I)ncludes a wide array of orally transmitted traditions of the numerous, sometimes disparate, African-American cultures of the New World. Among these traditions are tales of scoundrels, heroes, rollicking adventures, friendship, and much more: songs, myths, myth-legends, epic-like narrations, and recollections of historical happenings. There are descriptions of cult life, around which many traditions and beliefs flow; of music and dance, which have an integral connection with traditional ways; and of the social scene in places where Africans and Europeans, or white and black ideas intermingled and became Afro-American. (This book) perceives the interconnections of cultural inheritances throughout the Afro-American region and the local divergences as well. Early sections of the book survey the traditions and oral literature of Spanish, French, and English-speaking islands of the Caribbean, and of areas of Central and South America inhabited by people of African descent. There follows an extensive section devoted to the tales, beliefs, recollections, songs, religious epics, and a wide variety of oral creations of blacks in the United States. The Appendixes include a number of African stories and descriptions that point up the impact of African traditions on the cultures of Afro-America. Very light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
165 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
New York Coward-McCann 1963 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, courtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brilliant comedies of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new and complicated devices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of forgery and embezzlement. He became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mistress, Madame du Barry. The next King, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late King which were of explosive importance, involved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais allied himself with the cause of the American colonies; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, (he) organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, his play 'The Barber of Seville' had been acclaimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the ban was reluctantly lifted, all Paris fought to see it. When the Revolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a friend's house. Later he was arrested, released through influence of a woman, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." A few small faint foxing marks on free endpapers, light wrinkling at top/ bottom of spine, very small dint at top edge of front board, tiny foxing marks at edges of illustration pages. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny closed tears at bottom of spine and on rear hinge, minor foxing on edges of flaps.

THE SMALLER RHODODENDRONS., Cox, Peter A. Foreword by Professor D.M. Henderson. Colour illustrations by Margaret Stones and Rosemary Wise.
166 Cox, Peter A. Foreword by Professor D.M. Henderson. Colour illustrations by Margaret Stones and Rosemary Wise. THE SMALLER RHODODENDRONS.
Timber Press, Beaverton, OR, 1985, first American edition.
271 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0881920142 B&w photographs, maps, drawings, colour illustrations. "The author surveys smaller rhododendrons in their natural habitat, their distribution, ecology and introduction into cultivation, and then moves on to garden cultivation, examining shelter, shade, climate, hardiness and plant associations. The chapter on planting and maintenance covers soil preparation, planting, feeding, pruning, diseases and pests. One of Pete r Cox's strengths is the personal experience he brings to the subject, and this is reflected in a description of the climate and conditions at Glendoik, Perth, where a large percentage of the plants mentioned in the book have been grown with s o m e s u ccess. Personal experience shows also in the detailed species descriptions, the largest part of the book, in which cultivation history, botanical characteristics, and garden value are assessed in great detail. There is of course a cla ss if ic at i on o f the species. Hybrids and hybridization are described more fully than before (the author gives some pointers for future efforts here), and there is an account of propagation techniques. With its list of recommended species and hy bri ds, ga rd ens , n urseries and societies, (this book) offers an immense amount of detailed, up-to-date information, its value enhanced by the practicality readers have come to expect of this author." ZERO TOLLERANCE: AN INTIMATE MEMOIR BY THE MAN WHO REVOLUTIONIZED FIGURE SKATING., Cranston, Toller. With Martha Lowder Kimball.
168 Cranston, Toller. With Martha Lowder Kimball. ZERO TOLLERANCE: AN INTIMATE MEMOIR BY THE MAN WHO REVOLUTIONIZED FIGURE SKATING.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1997 0771023340 / 9780771023347 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
352 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "Toller Cranston is: six-time Canadian figure-skating champion, celebrity, costume designer, artist extraordinaire, broadcaster, choreographer of skating routines, raconteur, bon vivant, coach, world traveller, art collector, legend and enigma. In 1976 he won Olympic bronze (so why did it feel like defeat?). This book tells the story of his life after those fateful games at Innsbruck. The rise and fall of Toller's first professional ice show is described in soul-searing detail. His subsequent triumphant tour of Europe as the Skater of the Century is recounted, in contrast, with wicked humour. There are vignettes here of his encounters with the rich and famous from Leonard Bernstein to Pierre Cardin and of his life among Europe's aristocrats and bohemians. Toller has experienced the high life and the low. He has stayed in the most luxurious hotels, held court in palatial houses, sought seclusion in beautiful estates. But the hard times took their toll. In the early 1990s a combination of circumstances, including a disastrous professional association with out-of-control American skater Christopher Bowman and a lawsuit that dragged on for years (ending in complete victory for Toller), led to a personal crisis from which recovery came slowly. But even in the blackest hours, Toller's humour and creative powers never deserted him - an extraordinary self -portrait written by a uniquely gifted individual. Toller's wit, insight, and delicious way with words will entertain and astound readers whether they are skating fans or not." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

London Victor Gollancz 1972 0575013745 / 9780575013742 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
173 pp, 8" H. "Once again our detective is the charming and erudite Kate Fansler, professor of English Literature at an American university, aided by the New York assistant district attorney, Reed Amheart, who she has recently married. In an emergency she agrees to take on a senior seminar on 'Antigone' at her old school, the Theban. The central situation of the play, Antigone's determination to give token burial to her brother, in defiance of King Creon's edict, provides a challenge to which the girls at the Theban respond eagerly - a heroine defying to the death the tyranny of the State. And Kate soon finds herself deeply involved in today's confrontations and crises. But the crunch comes when a pupil's mother - a heart patient, and neurotic - is found dead in the school in the middle of the night. How did she get there? And why? And how did she die? Was she frightened to death by the guard dogs that patrol the building at night? Or was she brought to the school already a corpse? Reed offers himself as guinea pig to test the reactions of the terrifying Dobermans. And Kate skilfully probes the girls' reactions by judging their passionate responses to the Greek drama." Albuquerque University of New Mexico Press 1994 0826313876 / 9780826313874 Second Printing Soft Cover Very Good - Barton Wright.
167 pp, 10" H. B&w illustrations. "First recorded over a hundred years ago by Frank Hamilton Cushing (the first participant observer of a native American Indian population), these tales have remained buried in an 1891 Bureau of American Ethnology report. Barton Wright has collected twenty-five of them, edited them, and provided extensive annotation. He shows how each myth compares to its parallel among other pueblos, glosses native terms, and illustrates each story with excellent scratchboard drawings. Within the Zuni world of myth and legends lies tales of adventure, epic journeys, and tragedy, which relate history, teach moral values, explain ceremonies, and offer amusement as well. Representing just a sampling of what is available in Zuni oral tradition, these twenty-five myths present Zuni thought on the origins of the cosmos, the deities, the earth, and the all important food, corn. They explain social organization, the Kach'ina Cult, and the early wanderings of the Zuni or A'shiwi around the Southwest." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks.
