EDWARD JAMES LENNOX: "BUILDER OF TORONTO"., Litvak, Marilyn M.
161 Litvak, Marilyn M. EDWARD JAMES LENNOX: "BUILDER OF TORONTO".
Dundurn Press, Toronto, 1995.
118 pp, large 8vo (9 7/18" H), soft cover. ISBN 1550022040 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, plans, elevations. "From 1876 to 1915, Edward James Lennox was a formidable force in Toronto's architectural community. Many of his buildings are still landmarks in a city that continues to evolve. Born and educated in Toronto, Lennox looked to the past for inspiration but was never captured by it. His prototypical Annex house on Madison Avenue, Old City Hall, and Casa Loma bear witness to his technical expertise and aesthetic sensibilities. Through text and illustrations, this volume tells the story of a resolute architect whose vision helped shape an emerging city, and who in his time was called the 'builder of Toronto'." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor wrinkle at bottom edge of front cover, very minor rubbing, slight waviness at top of textblock. Very Good+

CULTURE AND ANARCHY IN IRELAND 1890-1939. THE FORD LECTURES DELIVERED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD IN THE HILARY TERM OF 1978., Lyons, F.S.L.
163 Lyons, F.S.L. CULTURE AND ANARCHY IN IRELAND 1890-1939. THE FORD LECTURES DELIVERED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD IN THE HILARY TERM OF 1978.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1979 0192224931 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "Irish history has traditionally been interpreted primarily in political terms as the struggle of an emerging nation to shake itself free of seven hundred years of English domination. The events of the last decade in Northern Ireland have led many people to realise that the reality is more complex, but this has left them if anything more confused than they were before. The purpose of this book is to trace concisely the outline of four conflicting cultures which co-exist in Ireland north and south. To bring their conflict to a focus they have been examined mainly within a narrow historical framework, the period 1890-1939 (defined by the two symbolic dates of the fall of Parnell and the death of Yeats), though there are some necessary excursions into a remoter past, especially in relation to Ireland. The underlying theme of the book is that no political solution has been or will be successful without a proper understanding of the intricacies of this interlocking pattern of cultures - Gaelic, English, Anglo-Irish, Ulster Protestant. The book is in essence an attempt to provide the historical basis for such an understanding." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown, a previous owner's name in ink and faint erased pencil marks on free front endpaper, very light liquid stain in top margin of page 19, minor edge wear, small corner bump, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling on bottom of textblock. KINGSTON UPON THAMES: A PICTORIAL HISTORY., McCormack, Anne.
172 McCormack, Anne. KINGSTON UPON THAMES: A PICTORIAL HISTORY.
Phillimore, Chichester, 1989.
Unpaginated, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 085033716X Pictorial endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Kingston upon Thames is a Royal Borough, one of only four in England and Wales. Seven Anglo-Saxon Kings were crowned in the town, which has been an important market and trading centre for more than a thousand years. The Royal Borough was enlarged in 1965 by the inclusion of the two former Boroughs of Malden and Coombe, and S u r b i t o n . At the beginning of the 19th century, the built-up area around the Market Place supported the traditional trades for which Kingston was famous - malting, brewing, tanning, and tallow-chandlery - while mansions with extensive pleas ur e gr ou nd s an d farms surrounded the town. The coming of the railways in 1838 and the subsequent rush for development land produced a dramatic change. Large estates were sold and built over to form the pattern of streets and houses familiar t oda y. S urb ito n and M alden and Coombe became separate authorities and churches, chapels and schools were built to serve their expanding communities. The construction of the Kingston By-Pass in 1927 encouraged further growth and the developme nt o f t he a rea into a cen tre of light industry meant that firms like the Sopwith Aviation Company grew rapidly alongside more traditional businesses. The splendid illustrations in this book, many of which come from the local history collecti on in Kin gston Her itage Ce ntre, cov er that important 150-year period in the history of all three former Boroughs, as the ancient town amid open country was transformed into the contemporary scene. The book provides a fascinating and informa tive r ecord of da ily l ife si nce Victor ian t imes, in wartime and in peace, and of the evolution of the present environment. It will be particularly welcomed by those who still remember many of the scenes and events depicted so vividly in the photogr aphs a nd by a ll who are in tere sted in the p ast of the Kingston area." A HUNDRED YEARS OF ROYAL STYLE., McDowell, Colin.
173 McDowell, Colin. A HUNDRED YEARS OF ROYAL STYLE.
Muller, Blond & White, London, 1985, first edition.
192 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0584110715 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(T)akes us behind the royal image - behind the panoply of royal fashion. With rare know ledge and informed wit Colin McDowell explains how the requirements of protocol and public relations combine to define the boundaries of royal style - not only in terms of clothes but also performance on state occasions and overseas travel and, i n d e ed, at all the crucial moments of the Royal Year. His own outstanding drawings, as well as a marvellous selection of photographs, illustrate and enlarge on the story. Colin McDowell's meticulous research, and his privileged access to designe rs , su ppliers and other sources closely involved in the creation and maintenance of royal style bring a very special authority to this fascinating and detailed survey. (It) concentrates on the style of four Queens, each of whom has or had a disti nct a nd individual style that epitomized the monarchy of her day. Two other ladies of remarkable style are added to complete the picture: one, Wallis Simpson, who became Duchess of Windsor, and who might have been Queen....but who, it can be argu ed, was un suitable exactly because of her style; and another, who all trust in due course will be Queen: Princess Diana, whose own style so happily does so much to glamorize and popularize the monarchy of today." Light fading to cloth - 1 1/4" st rip down hin ge side of front board, light waviness to edges of text block; place, date and initials in ink on half-title page. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, heavy fading to spine color - lettering is still vis ible, crea se down centre of spine, light rubbing with a few light line indentations. 421 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "Many nineteenth-century writers highlighted the difficulties recent immigrants faced - the clearing of forest and the breaking of new ground, the isolation and long Canadian winters - and emphasized what they perceived as the negative, alienating influences of Ontario's rapid urban and industrial expansion. In turn, however, they celebrated the progress demon-strated in the pioneers' domination over nature, the establishment of thriving communities, and the extension of transportation networks. William Wye Smith, a popular nineteenth-century Upper Canadian poet, was no exception. Smith prepared his 'Canadian Reminiscences', a handwritten compilation of anecdotes that relate to his experiences as journalist, clergyman, and son of Scottish settlers, to provide his own unique perspective of pioneer life. This fully annotated version of his unpublished manuscript highlights Smith's unwitting testimony to the social life of the province, his relationship to the construction and maintenance of Scottish and Canadian identity, and his position in literary history." London HarperCollins 2010 000730272X / 9780007302727 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
390 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w map. "As the ship docked in Bombay, Anthony Morgan and his company, fresh from England, were given their first orders: the execution of mutineers using artillery to blow them to pieces. This was the harsh reality of the mutiny that swept British India where massacres of men, women and children on both sides were commonplace. Into this plunged Morgan, bewildered by the complications of tribe, caste, religion and deep-seated racial hatred among those he led as well as fought, and yet he was expected to triumph. The Mutiny was one of the greatest challenges to the Victorian Empire - it seared itself into the psyche of both Indians and British for a century and more. (This) is a gripping novel about a soldier's dilemma between orders, saving his career, and a matter of his honour." Minor lean to spine, minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.
