Dundurn, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
171 pp, square soft cover (8" x 8"). B&w photographs. ISBN 9781550028515 "A crab boat off Newfoundland catches fire, and a dangerous rescue is undertaken by helicopter. A commercial helicopter crashes in Nunavut, and a search and rescue team braves a savage snowstorm to save the pilot. (This book) features the above thrilling accounts and many more from across the country, past and present. Its heroes are to be found in the RCMP, city police forces, the Canadian military, and among all the rescue workers and specialists of the C anadian Coast Guard - volunteers, too, risk injury and even death to help others. Sidebars highlight the equipment search and rescue teams use, how search dogs are trained, how long-line rescues work, how navy divers are making a difference in the deserts of Afghanistan, and the meaning of terms such as emergency position-indicating radio beacons, Maydays, datum lines, and much more." Although catalogued as for the younger reader, this book gives an interesting overview of Canadian search and rescue operations for most levels of reader. 164 McDowall, Duncan. QUICK TO THE FRONTIER: CANADA'S ROYAL BANK.
Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1993 0771055048 / 9780771055041 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
478 pp, 10" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he story of the Royal Bank, told not only in terms of executive personalities and corporate strategies, but also through an exploration of its corporate culture - of the lives of the people of the Royal - and of the part this corporate culture played in the opening of the country and the expansion of international trade. Throughout are vignettes that focus on some diverting details in the life of the Royal Bank. How many, for instance, know that Henry Mullins, the manager of the Mariposa branch of the Exchange Bank in Stephen Leacock's 'Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town', was based on a real-life Royal Banker, George Rapley, of the Orillia, Ontario branch? Or that, in an effort to foil robbers, tellers were often expected to sleep on the bank premises (sometimes in front of the vault) with loaded revolvers under their pillows? Eminently readable as well as informative (this book) fills an important gap in Canadian business history." Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly top edge small scratch on both panels, tiny dent on front panel.

WESTERN RAIL TRAIL., McKillop, Norman.
168 McKillop, Norman. WESTERN RAIL TRAIL.
London Thomas Nelson and Sons 1962 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
190 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Norman McKillop, a retired top-link driver, has fulfulled his ambition of visiting North America, and has written the story of his journeys on the Canadian railways as he travelled from East to West. After he completed his Western Rail Trail proper over Canada he spent some days in New York and neighbouring states. His description of his visits to the Pennsyl-vania and Grand Central Stations with all their marvels of electronic working and devices makes fascinating reading. His enthusiasm for everything to do with railway working won the co-operation of every railway officer and man, and the whole account is an intensely human document. He not only noted all the details in which Canadian railways differ from those in this country (Great Britain), but his story gives a very vivid account of the people with whom he came in contact." Slight bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small edge tears with old tape on inside surface, light edge wear.

RAIDERS OF THE MOHAWK: THE STORY OF BUTLER'S RANGERS. GREAT STORIES OF CANADA SERIES NO. 3., Miller, Orlo.
172 Miller, Orlo. RAIDERS OF THE MOHAWK: THE STORY OF BUTLER'S RANGERS. GREAT STORIES OF CANADA SERIES NO. 3.
Toronto Macmillan 1909 Reprint Hard Cover Good+ Good- John MacLellan.
182 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Map endpapers. Black, white and green illustrations. "When the thirteen colonies of America went to war for their independence, there were many colonists who declared for their King, George III. This is the story of one such group - the fierce and reviled Butler's Rangers, a Loyalist regiment which, from a base at Niagara, fought a series of courageous and bitter campaigns during the American Revolution, 1776 to 1783, for the King and for their homes in the State of New York. It is also the story of young Daniel Springer, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., whose father was killed by the rebels early in the war. Daniel joined the Rangers and through his experiences we follow some of the most savage battles of the Revolution and meet the Loyalists who fought with courage and gallantry for their beliefs - staunch old Colonel John Butler, commander of the regiment; his dashing, ill-fated son, Captain Walter; Peter Ten Broeck, who declared for the King while his brother declared for the rebels; Joseph Brant, war chief of the Mohawks; 'Indian' Allen, hard-bitten frontiersman; and the Rangers' Indian allies, the Senecas, Mohawks, and Cayugas who were members of the Six Nations. Here is history that was also high adventure, sought and sustained by men of strong ideals." A fictionalized version written for the younger reader. A few center page leaves with corner creases and a few with light stains in margins, large corner crease on title page, large gift inscription on dedication page, tiny corner bumps to boards, light soiling to fore-edge of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, book is slightly cocked, very light edge wear. 173 Miquelon, Dale. DUGARD OF ROUEN: FRENCH TRADE TO CANADA AND THE WEST INDIES, 1729-1770.
Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1978 0773502998 / 9780773502994 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
282 pp, 9 1/4" H. Tables, map. "From the letters and fragmentary accounts of Robert Dugard of Rouen, Professor Miquelon has brought to life the history of an eighteenth-century trading company. Robert Dugard and his associates were men who came of age at the right moment to capitalize on the political and financial stability of France during the thirty years after Utrecht, and on the widening opportunities of colonial trade. Their Societe du Canada was founded in 1729 to handle the Quebec trade, but soon they were also testing the sugar island trade. By 1742 their business with the West Indies was more profitable than their Canadian trade. But catastrophe trod upon the heels of success: between 1744 and 1748 most of their fleet was lost to shipwreck and war. Of the three remaining ships one was broken up, another relegated to the fishery, and the third given over to sugar hauling. At Quebec, Dugard's factors, Havy and Lefebvre, had remained and prospered in the fur trade, Labrador sealing, and the trade with France. Professor Miquelon describes their activities, which continued until their business was completely destroyed by the Conquest of Canada." Bump to top of spine, three corners have tiny or small bump. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

174 Moir, John S., editor. Introduction by John Webster Grant. THE CROSS IN CANADA: VIGNETTES OF THE CHURCHES ACROSS FOUR CENTURIES.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
247 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This anthology of vignettes illustrating the part played by all branches of the Christian church in Canadian development offers glimpses into church life - from Jacques Cartier's planting the cross in the Gaspe to the remarkable Christian pavilion at Expo '67. Here are such different personalities as Jeanne Mance, founder of Canada's first hospital; Brother Andre, the modern miracle worker of Montreal and Norman MacLeod, the hero-tyrant of his own congregation in Cape Breton. Here, too, are brief pictures of the churches' many-sided service to Canada - a Presbyterian long communion, a Methodist camp meeting, the horrible deaths of Jesuit missionaries and the gallantry of a padre on the beach at Dieppe. We meet men and women whose names are known to every Canadian, and others whose lives of service were passed in obscurity. Drama, sorrow, humour and inspiration are found in this tribute to the cross in Canada." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light browning at top/bottom edges - also on spine and flap-folds; one small edge tear (taped); some tape on top/bottom inside edges, minor edge wear.

CITY TO CITY., Morris, Jan. Drawings by Barry Blitt.
179 Morris, Jan. Drawings by Barry Blitt. CITY TO CITY.
Macfarlane Walter & Ross, Toronto, 1990.
173 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0921912102 B&w illustrations. "During her regular visits to Canada over the past thirty-five years, (Morris) has watched its evolution with a mixture of empathy, fascination, and frustration. She finds the preoccupation with national identity baffling, since she herself has no trouble in differentiating Canada from every other country in the world. Nowhere in Canada, she says, could she ever imagine herself to be in the United States. The pursuit of happiness nowadays, she believes, can be better pursued north of the border. Indeed, she described the Canadian society as 'on the whole, the most admirable on earth', and writes that she is 'not ashamed to say that I have grown to love the country'. Not that 'City to City' is all sweetness and praise. Her assessments of the ten places she writes about - St John's, Newfoundland; St Andrews, New Brunswick; Montreal; Ottawa; Toronto; Saskatoon; Edmonton; Banff; Vancouver; and Yellowknife - are never predictable. In fact, her reaction is sometimes the opposite of what Canadians might expect. Some of the cities that Canadians consider 'world class' fall, in her view, well short of the mark. In smaller places, which many urban Canadians dismiss as provincial and uninteresting, she discovers great value and appeal. Canadians may not be flattered by everything Jan Morris has to say about their country, but no reader will fail to be stimulated, informed and entertained. Deeply personal and yet brilliantly researched, highly readable and yet profoundly resonant, (it) is an astute portrayal of a country poised on the brink between true nationhood and disintegration." Light browning to fore-edge and top of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing. Very Good/Very Good
