"The Royal Mews behind Buckingham Palace is the department of the Royal Household responsible for the horse-drawn and motor travel arrangements of Her Majesty the Queen and members of the Royal Family. Its buildings form a hidden village of stables, workshops, homes, offices and garages, and the Mews community, despite modernisation, flourishes on customs and traditions that have been handed down over nine reigns. The Queen's regular use of horses and carriages has provided essential patronage for the skills of the craftsmen who also work there and are involved in their upkeep. The international media co v e r a g e t hat is given to many domestic and ceremonial occasions throughout the Royal year means that Her Majesty's carriages and cars are very much in the public eye. But whether seen on the streets, the television screen or the printed page, t he re i s li t tl e time for the spectator to absorb the wealth of historic detail that is on view in any royal procession. In their new book, Mary Stewart-Wilson and David Cripps present an unrivalled account of the carriages, horses, harness, li ver y a nd ca rs of th e Royal Mews. What they have done is to stop the procession to allow a closer look at two and a half centuries of regal splendour and service to the Crown." 306 pp, 9 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "On the night of 12 May 1944, Major Colin Scott Dafoe, a surgeon on special assignment with Britain's SOE parachuted behind enemy lines into German-occupied Yugoslavia. His mission, code-named 'Toffee', was to provide medical aid to the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia: the ragtag band of unsung heroes who were Marshal Tito's Partisans. Dafoe, a native of Madoc, Ontario, was no stranger to combat - he had served with the British 8th Army in Tobruk and El Alamein in North Africa - but nothing he had experienced in the deserts of Africa had prepared him for the war in occupied Yugoslavia. The hit-and-run tactics of guerrilla fighting in mountainous terrain made a mockery of conventional medical procedures, but Dafoe was a devoted and ingenious surgeon who put his skills to the test time and time again, despite incredible hardship and danger. In an operating room constructed from parachutes, Dafoe operate on the maimed and wounded, who were brought from miles around to receive his expert attention." Tiny wrinkle at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, minor edge wrinkling.

ALLIED INTERVENTION IN RUSSIA 1918-1919 AND THE PART PLAYED BY CANADA., Swettenham, John.
151 Swettenham, John. ALLIED INTERVENTION IN RUSSIA 1918-1919 AND THE PART PLAYED BY CANADA.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1967 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
315 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. "Allied intervention (in the Russian Civil War) took place in three main theatres; Northern and Southern Russia as well as Siberia. Canadians served in all these places - in fact Canada was the major Commonwealth contributor to the intervention in Siberia - and a superficial account of the events and their political implications is contained in the official history of the Canadian Army in the First World War. John Swettenham, who drafted the Canadian account, now treats the subject in depth and in international perspective. Official British records for the period (were at the time of printing) still witheld from scholars; those in Ottawa, however, are not and these have been consulted to throw new light on the motives and actions of the intervening powers. In this critical assessment the story of the Allied operations in Russia has been written against the double background of the issues and events of the Russian Civil War itself and of the international intrigues and rivalries of the erstwhile Allies; thus the inverventionists' role can be seen in a broad perspective. The reasons for failure - so that Bolshevik Russia emerged 'thoroughly militarised - bitterly hostile' are plainly given." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, minor soiling/rubbing, a few tiny scratches on front panel.

Toronto Natural Heritage 2008 1550027603 / 9781550027600 First Edition. Soft Cover Fine
190 pp, small 4to (10" H). B&w photographs, map. "The Almaguin Highlands region, located approximately eighty kilometres north of the halfway point to the North Pole and rising high above sea level, was once coveted for its majestic white pine, game and silver birch. More than a century later; much of its unspoiled wilderness areas remain intact, ready for new exploration. Today, its enviable position of being just north of Muskoka and within easy driving distance of southern Ontario has made the Highlands the logical choice for the eco-tourist seeking new adventures. (This book) paints a lively picture of what the area must have been like in the early days. Here are the lumberjacks who ventured into the last of the great timber stands to cut down what was left of the white pine, and the intrepid settlers who trekked across the terrain not that far behind them - sometimes with little more than blazed trails as their guide. And here are the boat builders whose steamers and tugs traversed the multiple waterways, so important to the district, and the men and women of all walks of life who contributed to the spirit of the times." Cassell, London, 2002, reprint.
383 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 030435659X "The life of Thomas, Lord Cochrane was more extraordinary than that of Nelson, and more than outshines his fictional counterparts, Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey. He made his name battling Napoleo n's Navy in a series of outstanding and heroic actions, often fighting his ship against seemingly overwhelming odds. His life on land was equally dramatic. As a campaigner against corruption in the Admiralty he won himself many enemies, and w a s l a ter framed in a Stock Exchange fraud. Following his imprisonment he returned to the sea and, in a series of dramatic actions again famous for their disregard of the most daunting risks, helped liberate Brazil and Chile from colonial rule . The activities of Annabel and her attendant satellites - Solomon (the Siamese cat, who liked her a nd i n si st ed on sleeping in her bed) and Sheba (his mate, who pretended she Wasn't There), Miss Wellington (who said poor-dear-she-must-be-lonely), Henry the jennet (who was accordingly imported as a companion for her) and many others - all o f t hes e c oul d f ill a b ook. In it, (he) announced that Germany was going to start unrestricted submarine warfare against all shipping, Allied or neutral, in the Atlantic. He then made a startling and audacious proposal: the German Ambassador was to offer the Mexican government an alliance directed against the United States and, furthermore, to ask the Mexicans to contact the Japanese to see if they could be persuaded to switch sides (Japan was on the Allied side in the First World War). British Intelligence decoded the telegram and passed it on to the Americans, with momentous consquences." Very small printing ink mark on plain page 2. Small minor bump on slipcase.

176 pp, oblong 8vo (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D). B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. SIGNED AND DATED BY AUTHOR ON HALF TITLE PAGE. "During the latter years of the nineteenth century St. Andrews was 'discovered' by a wealthy few who sought a summer place by the sea. Escaping from Boston, Montreal, St. Louis, Toronto and elsewhere, they bought, rented, or built houses, returning year after year as their children did in turn. Luxurious hotels such as 'The Argyll' and 'The Algonquin' - advertising 'no hay fever' and good rail connections - were built to serve them, and a summer society was established: riding, sailing, playing tennis and croquet, dining, dancing, and gossiping. Fathers of Confederation like Sir Leonard Tilley and Sir Charles Tupper, the great railway builders Sir William Van Horne and Lord Shaughnessy, financiers like Sir James Dunn, politicians from Senator Cairine Wilson and C.D. Howe to John Turner, were joined in St. Andrews by socialites and possessors of 'old money' from both Canada and the United States. (This book) records the achievements and oddities of the people who made up this small but distinctive society and describes the 'cottages' in which they spent those summers by the sea."
