A WORLD IN FLAMES, 1944-1945. A PORTRAIT OF WAR: PART TWO., Malone, Richard S.
141 Malone, Richard S. A WORLD IN FLAMES, 1944-1945. A PORTRAIT OF WAR: PART TWO.
Toronto Collins 1984 0002172798 / 9780002172790 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
318 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, map. "In 1944, when this book begins, Richard Malone had been transferred from the Italian front back to England to take part in the Normandy landings. Trained before the war both as a soldier and a journalist, Malone had been seconded in 1940 from his regiment Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as Staff Secretary to Col. J.L. Ralston, Canada's Minister of Defence. (Now) poised for D-Day, he held staff appointments at both Canadian Army and British 21st Army Group Headquarters and he was given charge of all Canadian Army Press and Psychological Warfare service in the field. The Canadians accounted for nearly a third of the forces landed on D-Day and Malone's description of the invasion, the battles of Normandy, the liberation of Paris and Brussels make fascinating reading. Also from his unique perspective Malone has much of interest to say about the great controversial issues of the times: Montgomery's leadership, Patton's gap, the rivalry between the British and American high commands, the Battle of the Bulge, Arnheim and the reason for its failure and others. In 1944 when the battle for Europe was clearly won, Malone was chosen to go out to the Pacific and establish relations with General MacArthur. He witnessed the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri and was the first Canadian in Japan. He was in charge of the liberation of Canadian prisoners in Japan, China and Manchuria. His talks with Churchill, Alanbrooke, Montgomery, MacArthur, Beaverbrook, Ralston and other after the war add to our understanding of the part that Canada played in the Second World War." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor browning at top edge of flaps, minor rubbing, minor wrinkling at top of spine.

142 Masters, John. BUGLES AND A TIGER: A VOLUME OF AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Michael Joseph. 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Good Poor
312 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H). B&w illustrations. "(T)he story of how an English schoolboy became a professional soldier in the Indian Army, and in it the reader will find an absorbing picture of India in a time and as a way of life that has gone forever. It is a book of history - from the drill parades, fights, high life, and education at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst to the outbreak of the Second World War. It is a book of action - of danger and near-death, and bivouacs in the merciless sleet of Waziristan. It is a book of color - the silver, mahogany, tradition, and comradeship of the regimental mess; the thousands of tiny lights of Dewali; the exotic color of the jungles; and the snow-capped heights of the mountains. There is humor in the book, and love as well, but most of all it is a book that tells the truth about the days of a young soldier's years, and tells it eagerly and passionately, the way the days were lived. The objectivity and honesty of the writing clarify the book's importance as a moving and permanent contribution to our understanding of some of the people and events that made our world what it is." Previous owner's name on front pastedown and on free front endpaper, book is lightly cocked, crease down free rear endpaper - softer crease down pages 306 to end of book, moderate edge wear to boards, patches of heavy fading to color at top and bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block, several pages with tiny chip/tear at bottom edge, a few tiny liquis marks on top of text block. Dust jacket is in poor condition - flaps are complete.

WILLIAM WYE SMITH: RECOLLECTIONS OF A NINETEENTH CENTURY SCOTTISH CANADIAN., McLean, Scott A. and Vance, Michael E., editors. (William Wye Smith)
147 McLean, Scott A. and Vance, Michael E., editors. (William Wye Smith) WILLIAM WYE SMITH: RECOLLECTIONS OF A NINETEENTH CENTURY SCOTTISH CANADIAN.
Toronto Natural Heritage 2008 1550028049 / 9781550028041 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine
421 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "Many nineteenth-century writers highlighted the difficulties recent immigrants faced - the clearing of forest and the breaking of new ground, the isolation and long Canadian winters - and emphasized what they perceived as the negative, alienating influences of Ontario's rapid urban and industrial expansion. In turn, however, they celebrated the progress demon-strated in the pioneers' domination over nature, the establishment of thriving communities, and the extension of transportation networks. William Wye Smith, a popular nineteenth-century Upper Canadian poet, was no exception. Smith prepared his 'Canadian Reminiscences', a handwritten compilation of anecdotes that relate to his experiences as journalist, clergyman, and son of Scottish settlers, to provide his own unique perspective of pioneer life. This fully annotated version of his unpublished manuscript highlights Smith's unwitting testimony to the social life of the province, his relationship to the construction and maintenance of Scottish and Canadian identity, and his position in literary history." The humour, pathos and horror of war have been clearly outlined in this story and will clearly refresh the memory of any ex-soldier who served in that theatre.
