Among his many accomplishments, Tyrrell discovered Canada's first dinosaur, Albertosaurus, and an Ice Age glacier he named Keewatin. He risked his own and his companions' lives charting the Dubawnt and Kazan river networks west of Hudson Bay, and rescued the maps and records of Canada's great geographer, David Thompson, from oblivion. THE GERMAN OCCUPATION OF JERSEY: A COMPLETE DIARY OF EVENTS FROM JUNE 1940 TO JUNE 1945., Sinel, Mr. Harrison, A.G., foreword.
148 Sinel, Mr. Harrison, A.G., foreword. THE GERMAN OCCUPATION OF JERSEY: A COMPLETE DIARY OF EVENTS FROM JUNE 1940 TO JUNE 1945.
Evening Post, Jersey, 1945.
298 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H), soft cover. From the Foreword: "I have been in the position, perhaps more than anyone else, to appreciate the risks that Mr. Sinel took in this work and a witness to the fact that on many occasions notes for the Diary were being written at 'The Evening Post' Office under the very eyes of the Germans. It was not in ignorance of the risks involved that the author undertook this work, for a short time after the arrival of the Germans in the Island a senior member of 'Th e Evening Post' staff was imprisoned by the Secret Police for six weeks merely on the suspicion of writing a diary of local events, although they were unable to find or prove anything. So this Diary has been compiled, and I feel sure that i t s o b j e c tiveness and the omission of the fantastic rumours which were continually in circulation in the rumour-infested Island will prove it to be an accurate record of day-to-day happenings during this little Island's ordeal by German domina ti on . " I nt er io r - binding firm, moderate browning to pages, some damage to corners and edges of preliminary pages and last few pages. OSWALD MOSLEY., Skidelsky, Robert.
149 Skidelsky, Robert. OSWALD MOSLEY.
Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1975.
578 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0030865808 B&w plates. "The theme of Robert Skidelsky's brilliant biography is one of double tragedy - the self-destruction of Mosley and the failure of the British ruling class to meet the challenge of the twentieth-century. Describing Mosley's early life, Mr Skidelsky lays particular stress on his landed background and his experiences in the trenches during the first world war, both vital factors in forming his character and outlook . There follows his meteoric political rise in the 1920s, when as one of the few politicians who became 'Keynesians' he seemed more than anyone to have grasped the economic problems facing Britain. Frustrated and disillusioned by Ramsay M a c D o n a l d ' s leadership, he resigned from the Labour Government in 1930 at the age of thirty-four and founded first the short-lived New Party, then the British Union of Fascists. (The author) describes Mosley's turbulent career in the 1930 s wh en t he B UF ' to ok politics into the streets', his period in prison during the war as 'Churchill's guest', and finally his present view of world problems. Mr Skidelsky squarely confronts Mosley's most controversial fascist activities: th e gre at ral lie s a nd mar che s w hich often led to violence; his attack on the Jews and his campaign in the East End of London; and his opposition to the second world war which ended with his detention under Regulartion 18B. Drawing extensively on hit her to u npub lish ed Cabi net Pape rs and police reports (including those of the Special Branch), the author skilfully disentangles fact from mythology, and presents for the first time the full evidence on which an informed judgment on Mosl ey' s mot ives and respo nsibi lit y in thes e mat ters can be based; as well as shedding a new and unexpected light on police and government attitudes to fascism in the 1930s...." 150 Snow, Hank. With Jack Ownbey and Bob Burris. THE HANK SNOW STORY.
Urbana University of Illinois Press / Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame 1994 0252020898 / 9780252020896 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.

Mr. Spettigue then takes us to the school at Rockcliffe, where recruits...undergo the rigorous training that will fit them for the strenuous duties to come...We are taken on a tour of the fabulous Identification Branch in Ottawa...We visit laboratories where scrapings of blood, samples of hair, or tiny bits of cloth are examined microscopically to provide evidence that may convict or free a suspec t; where bullets are inspected under the comparison microscope to determine whether they were fired from the same gun; where experts can tell what typewriter was used to produce an incriminating letter...we visit the Mounties on their lonely patrols of the Canadian North - taking a sick Indian to hospital, bringing news and the warmth of human companionship to isolated trappers, or tracking down a criminal across miles of wilderness. Two chapters on the Marine Division tell thrilling tales of the pursuit and capture of smugglers, and of the rescue of ships in distress...The final chapter, 'On Being a Mountie', sums up what it is to be a member of the Force, and contains the inspiring story of the work that the Mounties have voluntarily undertaken in befriending underprivileged youths and helping to combat juvenile delinquency." 155 Stewart, Robert. SAM STEELE: LION OF THE FRONTIER.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1979 038513598X / 9780385135986 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
303 pp, 8 3/8" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "To Mr. Walter Loudon / an old Nor'Wester / Robert Stewart". "Young Sam Steele joined the North-West Mounted Police at its founding in the spring of 1873. His physical strength, skill with a horse, and determined character made him an ideal recruit for the fledgling force faced with the task of policing an area the size of Western Europe. Those first Mounties, ill-equipped and undermanned as they were, managed to bring order to a vast frontier and made possible the preservation of the fragile Canadian confederation. As he rose through the ranks, (he) took part in the great and small events of the opening of the Canadian West. Whether dealing with the refugee Sioux Chief Sitting Bull or tracking down cattle rustlers and murderers - and then dispensing justice in a tent courtroom - Steele displayed a combination of bravery, commonsense, fairness, and ingenuity. Thanks to Sam and the thirty men under him, not a mile of the Canadian Pacific Railway was lost to lawlessness during its construction through the prairies. Durng the gold rush of '98, he gained the respect of the roughnecks and dance hall girls alike in Dawson City, becoming known as the Lion of the Yukon. As commander of Lord Strathcona's Horse in the Boer War, Fighting Sam and his Big Stirrups rode the veldt as they had the Canadian prairie. This is a rich and exciting biography of the most famous Mounted Policeman of his day; it is also the story of a fascinating and formative period in Canadian history." Slight wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny scuff on front board, one tiny corner bump, a few tiny bumps on bottom edge of front board, two ssmall scuffs to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has several tiny chips and small tears archivally taped, small edge creases, light soiling on rear panel, light liquid stain at bottom of rear flap-fold, two 3" tears on front panel with old tape on inside, slight browning.

Toronto Dundurn 2004 1550025155 / 9781550025156 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
214 pp, 9" H. B&w and colour photographs, maps. "Poland, 1939. Facing an imminent Nazi invasion, the decision is made to transport some of the country's most ancient and valuable historical objects to prevent their plunder by the invading army. After a perilous journey that takes them through Romania, France, and England in search of a safe haven, the royal treasures arrive in Canada, where they are expected to remain for the duration of the war. However, the treasures' odyssey has only begun. The war's end marks the beginning of a rivalry between Poland's wartime government-in-exile, operating out of London, and a newly established Communist government in Warsaw. While both sides vie for control of the treasures, their custodians in Canada spirit them away. Over the next 16 years the struggle ensnares the Roman Catholic Church, the RCMP, the federal government, and the Quebec government, led by the strong-willed Maurice Duplessis. All the while, the outcry from the people of Poland, who believe the treasures have been stolen by the very country meant to protect them, grows louder. Canada, 1961. The release of the historic treasures is finally negotiated and they are returned to their native soil. The strange odyssey ends where it began, with the treasures returned to the very castle from which they were removed, after an absence of more than two decades."
