TORONTO: A PHOTOGRAPHIC TRIBUTE., Berger, Howard, introduction.
141 Berger, Howard, introduction. TORONTO: A PHOTOGRAPHIC TRIBUTE.
B. Mitchell, Godalming, Surrey, 1989.
96 pp, 4to (11 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0886655811 Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "From its modest importance in the late 1960s, Toronto has developed into one of the world's greatest financial and communications capitals. 'Toronto' chronicles the city's rise to corporate power by outlining the large-scale development of the downtown core, which spawned Bay Street as Canada's answer to Wall Street. Tracing Toronto's history from its humble beginnings as a fur-trading post in the 1600s, the following pages detail the construction of Toronto's important rapid-transit system, which features one of the world's most extensive subway lines, and looks at the city's exciting Harbourfront development. From the world-renowned Canadian National Exhibition and the Roy Thomson Hall to the man-made islands of Ontario Place and the SkyDome, stunning colour photography and an authoritative text portray Toronto as the ever-growing metropolis it truly is. Canada's largest city has come a long way in a short time. 'Toronto' shows you exactly how far and how fast." Light waviness to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very light browning to panels. 307 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0935553487 B&w photographs, maps. **VOLUME 1 ONLY**. "The air war on the Eastern Front in World War II was history's largest and longest air campaign. Nevertheless, it has been one of the least known and least understood chapters of aviation history. This is because earlier publications on this immense subject have been based on material taken almost exclusively from the German side. (The 4 volume set, of which this is Volum e 1 ) i s to be the most complete and detailed series ever published on the air war on the Eastern Front. It presents for the first time a true balance between German and Soviet accounts. (The authors) have undertaken a huge research effort to g le a n th e t rue events of this air war. Thanks to their painstaking research and brilliant analysis of German archival material, some of the first Soviet Air Force records ever to be seen in the West, and new information from German and Soviet a irm en , the y are able to present many valuable insights into the vast Eastern Front aerial struggle." Section headings in this volume: The Enemies; Background of a Disaster; Sunday, June 22, 1941; The Swan Song of the Red Bombers; Lightning War; Rec ove ry of th e Re d Air Force; "The Greatest Battle of All Time"; The Arctic Front; Fall of 1941: Stiffening Resistance; Barbarossa's Last Gasp; The Death of Barbarossa; Conclusions; Appendices; Notes; Sources. "The post-Expo era of Canadian architecture has produced works of international importance which have been recognized in European, Japanese and American periodicals. With almost 200 illustrations and a text written for the enquiring general reader, the authors have selected and presented what they judge to be the most significant projects from this rich a n d c o n t i nuing period....Through an examination of the National Gallery competition of 1976-77, the authors identify the mainstream concerns of Canadian architecture. Then, concentrating on major cities from coast to coast, they look at pro je ct s e mb od yi ng a lternative movements that are suggestive of possible future directions, projects such as: Corridart in Montreal; Robson Square in Vancouver; the Pavilion '70 ski chalet in St. Sauveur, Quebec; Toronto's Eaton Centre; Winnipe g's St . 147 Berton, Pierre. MARCHING AS TO WAR: CANADA'S TURBULENT YEARS, 1899-1953.
Doubleday Canada 2001 0385257252 / 9780385257251 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
632 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "The first war of the century, which took Canadian soldiers to South Africa, and the last, which sent them to Korea, bracket the tumultuous years of the (20th) century's first half like bookends on the shelf of history. They have a good deal in common, these two minor conflicts, whose chronicles pale when compared to the bloodbaths of the two world wars. Canada's wartime days are long past, and for many, the scars of war have healed. Vimy has been manicured clean, its pockmarked slopes softened by a green mantle of Canadian pines. Dieppe has reverted to a resort town, its beaches long since washed free of Canadian blood. Now a days, Canadians are proud of their role as Peacekeepers, from which they have gained a modicum of the international acclaim the nation has always craved, with precious little blood wasted in the process. In this monumental work, Pierre Berton brings Canadian history to life once again, relying on a host of sources, including newspaper accounts and first-hand reports, to tell the story of these four wars through the eyes of the privates in the trenches, the generals at the front, and the politicians and families back home. By profiling the interwar years, Berton traces how one war led to the next, and how the country was changed in the process. Illustrated with maps and line drawings, 'Marching as to War' describes how the experience of war helped to bind Canada together as a nation and chronicles the transformation of Canada's dependence upon Great Britain and its slow emergence as an independent nation caught in a love-hate relationship with the United States." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling and very minor rubbing.

THE SMUG MINORITY., Berton, Pierre.
148 Berton, Pierre. THE SMUG MINORITY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
160 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This is a book about freedom - and the lack of it - in Canada: freedom from useless and often degrading toil; freedom from want and freedom from ignorance. It is Berton's thesis, documented by public statments made over the past generation, that a smug minority of business and political leaders has conspired to inhibit that freedom. The author indicts his fellow countrymen for failing to invest in human beings in the same way that they invest in power plants, highways, and gold mines. His researches into poverty in Canada and into the inequalities of the education system will shock a good many readers just as his theories on work and leisure will enrage others raised in the Calvinist ethic. The book ranges over a wide variety of topics: the hippie movement in Toronto's Yorkville village - the author's personal experiences in a Yukon mining camp - the future of educational television in Canada - and the Chamber of Commerce's abortive 'Operation Freedom' campaign. But always Berton hammers on his central theme - that the nation has been held back by an inbred power-elite: 'Selfish, narrow, short-sighted men unable to grasp the vision of the future, imprisoned by a bookkeeping attitude to life, creeping silently and blindly along at the tag end of the parade of progress'." Small stamp mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, light to moderate rubbing - mostly on rear panel, one small edge tear archivally taped.

Bobbs-Merrill, Indianapolis, 1949, first edition.
158 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Johnny (Longfoot, son of Peter the Shoe King) must learn many things other boys didn't know. (His family) must find him a most unusual tutor who could teach him arithmetic, algebra, Egyptian, Greek and modern history, and several foreign languages, including Chinese. But where could they ever find a teacher who knew so many things? Finally it was decided that the only one with so much knowledge was - a cat!....(Thoug h Barnac, Squire of Catnap,) was willing to teach the boy, he insisted that Johnny must also learn to think for himself. And so one morning, when a drop of water splashed on Johnny's book, he soon reasoned where it came from - the ceiling . A n d t h e splash of water was a tear. This tear, though Johnny did not at first realize it, was the beginning of another exciting quest. For Phoebe the Spider was crying because he had lost a treasure, the Magic Hat. And Johnny, at Barnac' s s ug ge st i on , de cided to find it. The search would put all his new knowledge and keener wits to a splendid test...." "Many people's visual image of the Royal Horse Artillery is probably confined to the dazzling equestrian performances of the King's Troop which annually entrance schoolboys of all ages at the Royal Tournament. How many people pause to wonder why, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there should be a King's Troop? How many stop to consider why indeed there should have been a separate formation of mounted artillery in the British Army at all? Brigadier Bidwell answers these and most other questions about the Royal Horse Artillery, and as an experienced author, as e d i t o r o f the Royal United Services Institute Journal and an ex-Horse Gunner himself he could hardly be better suited to his task. From their formation in 1793 to the present day the Royal Horse Artillery have had but one objective - to exc e l. Th ey a re in deed a corps d'elite but a corps d'elite whose claim to distinction is based entirely on merit and, as Brigadier Bidwell shows, for nearly two hundred years they have rigidly adhered to their self imposed standard of excellence . He has pa id wor t hy tribute to a body of men whose name will shine forever in the annals of British military history."
