From the dust jacket of 'The Bombay Marines': "Newly returned from a successful assignment to rid the Arabian Se a of pirates, Captain Adam Horne of the frigate 'Eclipse' is summoned to the presence of his commading officer, Commodore Watson, head of the East India Company's private fighting unit, the much derided Bombay Marines. It is 1761, and Pond i c h e r r y , last stronghold of the French in the Indian subcontinent, has just fallen to the British. Now Captain Horne is given a strange and secret mission: to capture the defeated French commander Thomas Lally, from his prison at Fort St. G eo rg e in M ad ra s - or the unit will be disbanded for failure. Due to the deployment of most of the Marines on the east coast of India, Horne's force is seriously undermanned. He is left with only one choice: to take his pick of the motley co lle cti on of th iev es, r ap ists and murderers held in the prisons of Bombay Castle and subject them to intensive training for the most closely guarded campaign of the Seven Years' War. Drawing on a wealth of historical characters and events, and on l itt le-s tudi ed d ocum ent s o f the East India Company's early history, the action moves from sea to land, from the colourful waterfront of Bombay to the sadistic penal colony of Bull Island and the final, cataclysmic denouement within th e wa lls o f Fo rt St . Geo rge. In C apta in A dam Horne Porter Hill has created a character as vivid as Hornblower and Ramage, a man who has rejected the prestige of service in the Royal Navy or the East India Company's Maritime Service for the d ashin g, dar e-dev il lif e of h istor y's fi rst c omman do-style unit, operating amid the exotic dangers of Britain's most coveted oriental territories...." 148 Hilling, John B. Foreword by Group Captain T.G. 'Hamish' Mahaddie. STRIKE HARD: A BOMBER AIRFIELD AT WAR. RAF DOWNHAM MARKET AND ITS SQUADRONS 1942-46.
Stroud, Gloucestershire Budding / Sutton 1997 1840150017 / 9781840150018 Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
141 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps, etc. "This is an account of one small cog in the machinery of the Second World War - the story of the RAF bomber airfield at Downham Market in Norfolk . Every night for three long years young men of RAF Bomber Command flew from this East Anglian airfield in their Stirlings, Lancasters and Mosquitoes to pound into dust the might of Nazi Germany. Their contribution towards winning the war was crucial, but the cost in precious lives and equipment was high: 160 aircraft and nearly 900 airmen were lost on operations. Downham Market was notable in a number of ways, not least for the fact that two posthumous Victoria Crosses were won by its pilots (out of a total of only twenty-one for the whole of Bomber Command), and that it was the second of fifteen airfields in England to be equipped with the life-saving fog dispersal device known as FIDO. It was from Downham Market that the RAF 's last bombing sortie of the European air war was flown on 2/3 May 1945. Between 1942 and 1945 at various times the airfield hosted six bomber squadrons: Nos 214, 218 and 623 were Main Force squadrons in No 3 Group, and then f rom March 1944 Nos 571, 608 and 635 were a part of the RAF's elite No 8 (Pathfinder) Group. 'Strike Hard' is not so much a chronological history, but a microcosm of Bomber Command during the war years. Supported by more than fifty photographs, maps and plans, each chapter focuses on a separate aspect of life on the airfield, and of the bomber operations flown from there. The author has drawn on a number of sources, ranging from official to published and private material, to give a fascinating depiction of a bomber airfield at war." Very small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

150 Holmes, John W. THE SHAPING OF PEACE: CANADA AND THE SEARCH FOR WORLD ORDER, 1943-1957. VOLUME 2.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1982 0802055419 / 9780802055415 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The establishment of the United Nations system at the conclusion of the Second World War was followed by a period of disillusion in the late 40s about the prospects of world order. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 there came a regrouping of forces and revised calculations of what was possible. The first volume of 'The Shaping of Peace' described Canadian attitudes and policies towards international institutions as the Second World War ended. This volume is concerned with the developments in the decade after the war, with the changing Canadian concepts as they were shaped by events and challenges. Although principal attention is paid to the organs of the United Nations, other themes such as the establishment of NATO, the progress of the new Commonwealth, and the changing concepts of the North American relationship are analysed as essential elements in the Canadian search for equilibrium." Minor wrinkling at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, very light browning.

Toronto ECW Press 2013 1770411267 / 9781770411265 First Edition Soft Cover Fine Richard Williams, cover art. Inscribed By Author
260 pp, 8 3/4" H. Inscribed on title page: "To L___ / Martin June 18, 2013". "Picking up where 'Young Hunting' left off, Martin Hunter's second memoir explores Toronto in the 1960s as he marries his high school sweetheart, goes to work for the family paper company, fathers three children, and settles into a bourgeois lifestyle. But things don't stay settled for long. His flamboyant brother-in-law moves in with his gay lover, and peace, love, and experimentation arrive in Rosedale with wild parties. Hunter writes a play about Toronto's changing social dynamic that's considered racy but wins an award. The University of Toronto offers him a position as playwright-in-residence, and there he consorts with the likes of Robertson Davies and Marshall McLuhan. 'Still Hunting' takes readers on Hunter's adventures in Europe and the Middle East, reveals his stories of working in the theatre, and shares tales of his spirited friends, colleagues, and loved ones. From Greek shipping tycoons to up-and-coming actors to the Maharaja of Jaipur and filmmaker James Ivory, this memoir of a life well lived is full of unforgettable characters - chief among them Martin Hunter."
