142 Tippett, Maria. BETWEEN TWO CULTURES: A PHOTOGRAPHER AMONG THE INUIT.
Toronto Viking 1994 0670852430 / 9780670852437 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Charles Gimpel.
178 pp, oblong (10 3/4" H x 12" D). B&w photographs. "During the fifties and sixties, before Arctic travel was fashionable or easy, the distinguished British art dealer and amateur photographer Charles Gimpel made several journeys to the Canadian North. Maria Tippett introduces us to more than one hundred and twenty superb photographs taken during those trips, revealing a land in the midst of change and a photographer with a magnetic attraction to his subject. By the time Gimpel made his last visit to the region in 1968, the Inuit world had changed dramatically. The skidoo had replaced the dog team as a means of transportation. The pre-fabricated wooden house and styrofoam igloo were favoured over the sod hut and snow house. Inuit art had become a multi-million dollar enterprise. And commercial goods from clothing and food to refrigerators and power boats were imported from southern Canada. With a lively text that places Gimpel's photographs within the social and cultural milieu of the time, 'Between Two Cultures' gives us a unique and important glimpse of a people in transition." Very minor edge wear. Dust jacket has a small wrinkle at top of rear hinge, small dent on spine, a few very light rub lines.

Crecy 1994 0947554394 / 9780947554392 Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
224 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps/track charts. "HMS Tally-Ho, captained by Commander L.W.A. Bennington, was a T-class submarine which achieved spectacular success in the Second World War. Her name was chosen for her by Winston Churchill and it proved a very suitable one for a hunting submarine. In a single wartime commission, lasting from 15th March 1943 to 26th February 1945, she operated in the Malacca Strait. Here, surrounded by enemy air bases and in badly charted shallow waters - so shallow that many experts considered them completely unsuitable for submarine operations - she took a heavy toll of enemy warships and supply vessels. The boat, her captain and her crew are all vividly portrayed in this exciting chronicle which is the fruit of wide and detailed research." AUGUST 1914., Tuchman, Barbara W.
145 Tuchman, Barbara W. AUGUST 1914.
London Constable 1962 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
499 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). Map endpapers, b&w plates, maps. "It is not too much to say that the first thirty days of battle determined the future course of the First World War, the terms of the peace and the shape of the nations of our time. The bloody catalogue of the battles of August 1914 contains the almost legendary names of Liege, Mons, the Battle of the Frontiers, Charleroi, and Tannenberg, where generals' reputations were made or broken, and opportunities grasped or missed. Here is the indomitable Joffre rebuilding his shattered armies, Samsonov committing suicide after the annihilation of his army at Tannenberg (a staggering defeat that, perhaps, gave victory to Russia's allies), von Kluck stubbornly committed to his fatal mistake with Paris within his grasp, and Admiral Souchon in the 'Goeben' setting his desperate and fateful course for Constantinople. Here is Sir John French steadfastly refusing to work with his French ally, the brilliant Lanrezac 'limoge', perhaps, for being right too often, the sick Gallieni resolutely preparing the defence of Paris; and Winston Churchill, 'the only British minister to have a perfectly clear conviction of what Britain should do', acting upon his conviction without hesitation. The story begins with a brilliant and majestic set piece describing the funeral of Edward VII, which was attended by all the royalty, nobility and aristocracy of Europe, and marked the end of a splendid era. The reader is then swept into the magnificent narrative: firstly of the plans of the German, French, British and Russian General Staffs, all prepared some ten years before the war, none allowing for the contingencies of others; then of the tense and dramatic hours and minutes in Berlin, Paris, London and St. Petersburg that led to the outbreak of war; and finally of the invasion of Belgium, the advance through France according to plan, and the huge clash on the Eastern front. The narrative ends on the eve of the Battle of the Marne which just saved the war from being won by Germany. By that time the original plans of all the belligerents were in ruins." Book is slightly curved, minor edge wear, slight fading to colour on top of spine, minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, several small and tiny edge tears, light browning on spine and flap-folds/edges, light soiling.

RESISTING THE NAZI INVADER., Ward, Arthur. With Alexander Stilwell.
149 Ward, Arthur. With Alexander Stilwell. RESISTING THE NAZI INVADER.
Constable, London, 1997, first edition.
134 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0094767505 B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "In this highly readable and lavishly illustrated book, Arthur Ward draws on exclusive interviews and a unique collection of memorabili a not only to provide a vivid picture of Britain on the eve of expected invasion but also to tell the full story of a little known and highly secret aspect of Britain's defensive armoury - the Auxiliary forces. When the Nazi juggernaut thunder e d t o the Channel Ports in May 1940, Britons had little doubt that there would be a landing on the South Coast of England. (The author) evokes the tension of these months when Britain set about rapid re-organisation of its army in preparation f or G e rm an invasion, including the training of specialist and highly secret guerrilla forces. Inspired as much by the adventurous, imaginative flair of Peter Fleming and the exploits of T E Lawrence as by the gritty determination and organisati ona l g en ius of Colin Gubbins, later to head SOE, the auxiliary units were formed from a unique body of imperturbable and self-confident men who would be capable of acting with ruthless efficiency in the face of a merciless foe. Brimming with i nfor mati on and extr aordinary detail and accompanied by a feast of stunning illustrations, many of them in colour, (this book) provides a fascinating new insight into a remarkable moment in history." KITCHENER: THE MAN BEHIND THE LEGEND., Warner, Philip.
151 Warner, Philip. KITCHENER: THE MAN BEHIND THE LEGEND.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1985, first edition.
247 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0241115876 B&w photographs, map/battle plans, reproductions. "Kitchener was one of the most successful and far-sighted generals Britain has ever had, and his reputation was worldwide. But he has always been a mystery. Legends proliferated about him in his lifetime, and the circumstances of his death have remained an enigma. Not until recently, with the fresh material which has come to light, has it been possible to find the re al person behind that enormous, intimidating moustache. In this absorbing and percipient study, we begin to realise what a debt Britain owes to Kitchener. Far from being the remote, austere figure of the placards, he was a daring adventurer a n d s p y, a meticulous planner and perfectionist, and a commander who took his place in the forefront of the battle in order to know exactly what was happening. Like modern generals, Kitchener believed that battles should be won before they ar e f ou gh t , an d proved that small, well-organized armies could defeat vastly superior forces. In the Sudan he defeated his enemy in a final, searing battle; in South Africa he fought an entirely different campaign in which he methodically remov ed al l h is en em y's advantages. Setbacks only spurred him to greater efforts. He was trusted by civilians; worshipped by his soldiers; and detested by most of his officers. When he became Commander-in-Chief in India he had no war to fight, b ut he l eft the ar my in g ood shape for when its time came. His talent as a planner was great, and much thought was given to thwarting the Russian ambitions in Afghanistan. In the end the Soviets did not invade that country until sixty years aft er his d eath . A nd a lth ough, in company with Churchill, he is blamed for the Dardanelles disaster, recent disclosures of the limitations of contemporary naval gunnery have shown that the real blame lay elsewhere. In this book (Warner) investi gat es the pers onal myths as well a s the public man; Kitchener's dislike of politicians and the stormy episodes this caused later in his career; the fact that he never married because his intended bride died suddenly at the age of eighteen (he w as n ot homo sexual ); hi s abil ity to find friends among the ranks of his enemies as well as enemies among his friends; and what lay behind his untimely death in 1916." Leo Cooper, London, (1973), first edition.
178 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. ISBN 0850521343 "...Charles Whiting tells in this book of Field-Marshal Montgomery's race to the Baltic. He sets the final stage of the battle with the Germans against the background of the battle between Churchill and Truman, a battle in which the stature, the rhetoric, the persuasion, even the invective of the Great Man were to prove of no avail. Eisenhower and Marshall won the day and the Iron Curtain fell along the frontiers from which it has never risen. While Statesmen and Supreme Commanders exchanged telegrams, lesser mortals kept up the exchange of fire as German armed resistance degenerated into the hands of the aged and the beardless. Mr Whiting vividly portrays the final collapse of the German army, their manic dread of the Russians and the dissolution of the German High Command as the puppets of the Third Reich frantically tried to escape from the debacle. The Finale was at Flensburg but could it not have been much further to the East? In compelling yet historically well-researched terms Charles Whiting provokes many questions which scholastic verbiage and diplomatic niceties have hitherto occluded from the public gaze..." Corgi, London, 1973.
174 pp, mass market paperback. ISBN 0552092606 B&w photographs, map. "It was a great battle - perhaps the last great battle to be fought by the British Army. A whole German army surrendered and this led to the complete breakdown of the entire en emy defence facing the Westen Allies. But it was a political battle too - one not only designed to beat the German enemy, but also a new enemy from the East - the erstwhile Russian ally. Its aim was to break through the German defences o n t h e R i v e r Elbe so that Montgomery's men could fight their way to the Baltic coast and thus prevent the advancing Russians from moving westwards into north-west Europe. In the end, the plan was a failure, and the thousands of British soldi er s w ho h a d sl og ge d the hard, bitter road back from Dunkirk to Lubeck five years later, found that their victory was a hollow one...." 184 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "The German attempt to break the morale of the British by bombing London in 1940 did not succeed, so two years later, they switched their targets to the undefended cathedral cities of Exeter, Bath, York, Canterbury and Norwich, cities marked in Karl Baedeker's famous guidebook with three stars. Hence the name by which they came to be known. This time the British were not slow to retaliate and the punishment rained down upon the unfortunate people of Hamburg and Cologne surpassed in ferocity anything that had gone before. From now on the morale of the civil population came to be regarded as a legitimate target in the battle to break the enemy's will. Charles Whiting describes in detail the Baedeker raids on the cathedral cities of England and the retaliatory raids on Germany, illustrating his story with the recollections of many of those who survived the raids. He analyses the personalities of the Top Brass on both sides who authorized the bombings and shows how the change in attitude to indiscriminate bombing gradually came about. It is a gruesome yet fascinating story, told with all the vividness which readers of Charles Whiting's books will have come to expect." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. 158 Williams, Geoffrey. Foreword by Sir Michael Beetham. FLYING THROUGH FIRE: FIDO - THE FOGBUSTERS OF WORLD WAR TWO.
London Grange 1996 1856279006 / 9781856279000 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
228 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings/plans. "In the early years of (World War II), RAF bomber crews, who frequently endured the opposition of German nightfighters and flak, returned home only to discover their airfields completely fog-bound. Desperately short of fuel and often disabled by severe battle damage, the many crashlandings that resulted took a savage toll in valuable aircraft and crews. Prompted by Winston Churchill, the challenge to overcome this deadly hazard was taken up by the government's Petroleum Warfare Department and the result was the development of FIDO - Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation. Lines of burners fuelled by thousands of gallons of petrol were installed beside the runways to literally burn the fog off the airfields, thereby allowing aircraft to take-off and land in relative safety. (This book) portrays the early hair-raising attempts to produce fog-free airfields. The eventual result was a countrywide FIDO system at fifteen British airfields, covering most RAF and USAAF frontline Commands. By the time of the Ardennes Offensive in the winter of 1944, FIDO enabled over one thousand Allied aircraft and crews to make safe landings despite dense fog over Britain and the Continent. Book is lightly cracked between pages 116/7 - pages holding firmly, minor wear at bottom corners. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing, a few faint line indentations on rear panel, two tiny dents on rear hinge.

421 pp, 9 1/4" H. One of 'The Canadian Centenary Series'. B&w photographs, maps. "In the concluding volume of his study of the Canadian North since Confederation, Morris Zaslow details with encyclopedic scope the accelerating change typical of the second half of that era. In this period the frontiers of agriculture and industry swept northward from near the international border to their economic limits. In the search for oil and natural gas, these limits were also close to the country's physical limits. Assisted by new roads, extended railways, improved river transportation, and the new airplane, settlers, prospectors, and developers cleared land, sought mineral treasures, opened enterprises, and established permanent settlements in areas formerly given over to hunting and trapping by the native peoples. At the same time, the institutions of society and government familiar to southern Canada followed at a more measured pace."
