DARK BANQUET: BLOOD AND THE CURIOUS LIVES OF BLOOD-FEEDING CREATURES., Schutt, Bill.
143 Schutt, Bill. DARK BANQUET: BLOOD AND THE CURIOUS LIVES OF BLOOD-FEEDING CREATURES.
New York Harmony 2088 0307381129 / 9780307381125 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Patricia Wynne.
325 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w drawings. "(Z)oologist Bill Schutt takes readers on an entertaining voyage into the world of some of nature's strangest creatures - the sanguivores. Using a sharp eye and mordant wit, (he) makes a remarkably persuasive case that vampire bats, leeches, ticks, bed bugs, and other vampires are as deserving of our curiosity as warmer and fuzzier species are - and that many of them are even worthy of conservation. He takes us from rural Trinidad to the jungles of Brazil to learn about some of the most reviled, misunderstood, and marvelously evolved animals on our planet: vampire bats. Schutt also tracks the history of medicinal leech use. Once employed by the tens of millions to drain perceived excesses of blood, today the market for these ancient creatures is booming once again - but for very different reasons. Among the other blood feeders we meet are bed bugs, or 'ninja insects' (and he) also details our dangerous and sometimes deadly encounters with ticks, chiggers, and mites (the latter implicated in Colony Collapse Disorder - currently devastating honey bees worldwide). Then there are the truly wierd - vampire finches. And if you thought piranha were scary, some people believe that the candiru (or willy fish) is the best reason to avoid swimming in the Amazon. Enlightening, alarming, and appealing to our delight in the bizarre, 'Dark Banquet' peers into a part of the natural world to which we are, through our blood, inextricably linked." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny dent on bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

BOORI., Scott, Bill. Illustrated by A.M. Hicks. Jacket art by Nick Yates.
144 Scott, Bill. Illustrated by A.M. Hicks. Jacket art by Nick Yates. BOORI.
Abelard-Schuman, London, 1978.
149 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0200726951 The author's first novel. B&w illustrations. "The elements of Aboriginal lore which make up this stirring tale of magic and high adventure are based largely on the Kabi and Wakka nations, who once lived near the Queensland coast north of Brisbane. 'Boori' is a fantasy, but it shows the importance placed upon moral obligations by Aborigines in their native culture, and it is set in a precisely described landscape. T h e r e a d er should be able to trace the journey of the young man with the aid of an atlas and imagination - the People have gone but the mountains and rivers still remain, and the Melong still dances his great circling corroboree off the coast , br in g in g th e cyclones in to lay waste the land. In its imaginative empathy with traditional Aboriginal life and way of thought, 'Boori' is a notable achievement." Light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has ve r y lig ht wr ink li ng at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two very small closed edge tears, minor rubbing. Very Good/Very Good

London Oxford University Press Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- C. Walter Hodges.

The Ship Aground "derives its title from the name of a tavern that stood on the bank of London River a hundred and fifty years ago or thereabouts. That is where the hero spent his childhood, and that was his point of departure on a voyage in the best 'Treasure Island' vein that carried him to the other side of the world and back. The story is exciting without putting any undue strain on the reader's credulity, and the atmosphere and local colour of the period are well preserved." In Painted Ports, "Barty Dale is anxiously waiting to go to sea, in spite of the hardships endured in the past. When he does at last succeed in becoming an apprentice aboard the 'Sir Thomas Hobson', he is full of excitement at the thought of what lies ahead. 149 Snow, Hank. With Jack Ownbey and Bob Burris. THE HANK SNOW STORY.
Urbana University of Illinois Press / Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame 1994 0252020898 / 9780252020896 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.

TEN MINUTES TO BUFFALO: THE STORY OF GERMANY'S GREAT ESCAPER., Steinhilper, Ulrich and Osborne, Peter.
155 Steinhilper, Ulrich and Osborne, Peter. TEN MINUTES TO BUFFALO: THE STORY OF GERMANY'S GREAT ESCAPER.
Independent, Bromley, 1991, first edition.
432 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1872836011 B&w maps, plans, photographs, reproductions. "Having fought throughout the Battle of Britain, Ulrich Steinhilper was shot down as he flew his Messerschmitt Bf 109-E on a bo mber escort duty. As the wing turned over London it was attacked by 74 Squadron, 'The Tigers', and Sergeant Bill Skinner in a Spitfire was to claim the 'kill'. So it was that in late October 1940 Ulrich was to begin a phase of his life which w o u l d stretch him, at times, to the limit of physical endurance and at another to the edge of insanity. He was to become a prisoner of war, but he was not a man to embrace something as alien as imprisonment lightly and so he was to dedicate h i ms el f to t he idea of escape. This is the remarkable story of the man who was to become one of the select few, popularly known as 'Die Ausbrecherkonige von Kanada' (the breakout kings from Canada). It is a singularly remarkable history of inn ov ati on, c our age and, at times sheer audacity. The detailed record of the life of one very unusual German prisoner of war. It is entirely written from documents which were laboriously hand-written in 1943 and which, through a remarkable seri es of e vent s, were ret urned to Ulrich Steinhilper in 1953. It is not, therefore, the reminiscences of events which occurred fifty years ago, coloured and tainted by the passage of time, but the accurate and historically correct diary of an exce pti onal young ma n." 157 Stewart, Robert. SAM STEELE: LION OF THE FRONTIER.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1979 038513598X / 9780385135986 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
303 pp, 8 3/8" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "To Mr. Walter Loudon / an old Nor'Wester / Robert Stewart". "Young Sam Steele joined the North-West Mounted Police at its founding in the spring of 1873. His physical strength, skill with a horse, and determined character made him an ideal recruit for the fledgling force faced with the task of policing an area the size of Western Europe. Those first Mounties, ill-equipped and undermanned as they were, managed to bring order to a vast frontier and made possible the preservation of the fragile Canadian confederation. As he rose through the ranks, (he) took part in the great and small events of the opening of the Canadian West. Whether dealing with the refugee Sioux Chief Sitting Bull or tracking down cattle rustlers and murderers - and then dispensing justice in a tent courtroom - Steele displayed a combination of bravery, commonsense, fairness, and ingenuity. Thanks to Sam and the thirty men under him, not a mile of the Canadian Pacific Railway was lost to lawlessness during its construction through the prairies. Durng the gold rush of '98, he gained the respect of the roughnecks and dance hall girls alike in Dawson City, becoming known as the Lion of the Yukon. As commander of Lord Strathcona's Horse in the Boer War, Fighting Sam and his Big Stirrups rode the veldt as they had the Canadian prairie. This is a rich and exciting biography of the most famous Mounted Policeman of his day; it is also the story of a fascinating and formative period in Canadian history." Slight wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny scuff on front board, one tiny corner bump, a few tiny bumps on bottom edge of front board, two ssmall scuffs to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has several tiny chips and small tears archivally taped, small edge creases, light soiling on rear panel, light liquid stain at bottom of rear flap-fold, two 3" tears on front panel with old tape on inside, slight browning.

306 pp, 9 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "On the night of 12 May 1944, Major Colin Scott Dafoe, a surgeon on special assignment with Britain's SOE parachuted behind enemy lines into German-occupied Yugoslavia. His mission, code-named 'Toffee', was to provide medical aid to the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia: the ragtag band of unsung heroes who were Marshal Tito's Partisans. Dafoe, a native of Madoc, Ontario, was no stranger to combat - he had served with the British 8th Army in Tobruk and El Alamein in North Africa - but nothing he had experienced in the deserts of Africa had prepared him for the war in occupied Yugoslavia. The hit-and-run tactics of guerrilla fighting in mountainous terrain made a mockery of conventional medical procedures, but Dafoe was a devoted and ingenious surgeon who put his skills to the test time and time again, despite incredible hardship and danger. In an operating room constructed from parachutes, Dafoe operate on the maimed and wounded, who were brought from miles around to receive his expert attention." Tiny wrinkle at top of rear hinge.
