141 Rutherford, Ward. HITLER'S PROPAGANDA MACHINE
New York Grosset & Dunlap 1978 0448146274 / 9780448146270 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
192 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Paul Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's Minister of Propaganda and Public Entertainment, refined the use of what he called the Big Lie to a fine art. Democracy was portrayed as evil, dictatorship as good. Books which did not conform with Nazi ideology were burned; radio broadcasts were made with the intention of cowing the German populace and frightening the peoples of the world. Mass rallies were staged in Berlin, Nuremberg and elsewhere to whip up enthusiasm for the military expansion of Germany and hysteria for the Third Reich and the Fuhrer. Magazines and newspapers played their role in a more subtle way, emphasizing Nazi triumphs and minimizing or obliterating criticism of the regime and its failures. Colorful posters were put up throughout Germany. Later the Nazis enlisted the support of other Europeans in the pan-German cause. All of these propaganda techniques were master-minded by Goebbels, whose genius in orchestrating propaganda in the mass media was acknowledged even by his enemies. In films, magazines, posters, rallies and speeches by Hitler and his followers, Goebbels developed a propaganda mechanism that has been copied by dozens of dictators since but never equalled in its cynicism and fury." Book is slightly cocked, has light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning to edges of text block, light cigarette odor. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, browning at edges, light edge wrinkling, creasing at top 4" of front hinge, light rubbing.

142 Schall, James V. DOES CATHOLICISM STILL EXIST?
New York Alba House 1994 0818906944 / 9780818906947 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good
265 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). "The focus of this book is Catholicism as it understands itself. If it is 'against' anything, it is against those priests, bishops, theologians, professors, laymen and yes, non Catholics and non believers, who explain what Catholicism says about itself falsely or wrongly or incompletely. Catholicism may or may not be inherently credible, but it should rise and fall on what it says of itself alone, not on an explanation of itself that is not what it really holds about itself. Jean Danielou in his book 'The Salvation of Nations' sought to state the essence of the problem of the Church today in the light of the famous sin against the Holy Spirit which could not be forgiven: 'Many see only the human side of the Church and reject it because of that: their sin is not the sin against the Spirit, and we can believe that they will be forgiven. The sin against the Spirit - would be the sin of those who are cognizant of the divine nature of the Church and yet refuse through pride to acknowledge it.' The issue of the existence of Catholicism, even at times for Catholics themselves, is increasingly at this level. Schall sheds light on the relevance of the Church today by pointing to its revolutionary stance vis-a-vis a culture with which it more and more often finds itself at odds." Very slight edgewear, slight wrinkling at top and bottom of spine, one small area of color loss at bottom of spine.

Sarpedon, New York, 1993, reprint.
294 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 096276132X B&w photographs, maps. "When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, it seemed as though the hopes and fears of both dictators were correct. Entire Soviet armies disintegrated before the military skill of the Germans. Three million prisoners were taken in the first six weeks. By early October, the Germans were on open roads to Moscow and the Soviet government had already begun to evacuate the interior. The course of human civilization has turned on the outcome of a select few climactic battles throughout history, but never more so than when Stalin's enigmatic Soviet Union desperately rallied its resources to stave off Hitler's armies in the Battle of Moscow. This book captur e s t h e tension and excitement of one of the most harrowing events in history. From the drama in the command posts to the plight of the infantry and armor in the mud and snow, Albert Seaton illuminates the titanic struggle which was the pivotal b at t le o f W ord War II." "By the midsummer of 1943 the Wehrmacht had fallen back behind the Straits of Sicily in the Mediterranean and had begun to build, with fe verish haste, the Atlantic Wall in the west and the East Wall in Russia - in fact to construct their Fortress Europe, with the intention of defending it to the last. Here the author sets out simply and concisely the political, economic an d m i l i t a r y organization of the Third Reich, its strength and its weaknesses. He traces the almost unbelievable chain of events within Germany during the last two years of the Second World War that saw the Fortress liberated or overrun, and t h e wh ol e of t he R eich engulfed, and then inundated, by the invading armies of the allies. 224 pp, 4to (11" H), soft cover with self-flaps. ISBN 1894243234 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. The catalogue of the exhibition. "This book demonstrates how two strains of influence - the resurgence of Classicsim and the impact of 'pri mitivism' on Western culture - provide links between Symbolism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism and the birth of Modernism. Certain polarities generated by these two different strains - tradition versus innovation, Western versus non-Western c u l t u r e , t he timelessness of myth versus the experience of modern life - were driven by ideas that developed formalist parallels. This can be seen in the struggle between the figurative and abstract in art, and in the contrast between the pa st or al i dy ll a n d the contemporary landscape...." THE OTHER VICTORIA: THE PRINCESS ROYAL AND THE GREAT GAME OF EUROPE., Sinclair, Andrews.
148 Sinclair, Andrews. THE OTHER VICTORIA: THE PRINCESS ROYAL AND THE GREAT GAME OF EUROPE.
London Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1981 0297779877 / 9780297779872 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good -
282 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w plates. "When Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Victoria, fell in love and married Prince Frederick, the heir to the Prussian throne, many Prussians regarded the alien Princess Royal as a British agent - when she was only being loyal to her beloved family. This absorbing book, mainly based on papers in the royal archives at Windsor Castle, shows for the first time how Queen Victoria ran an unmatched network of intelligence through her daughter's marriage and her relations in every court in Europe. The Queen and Bismarck both wanted Germany to be united, but their methods of achieveing this were opposed, and their struggle led to isolation and anguish for 'Vicky' and 'Fritz'. The author opens a spyhole on the secret history of the last century and reveals the story of a royal love that turned to royal tragedy - the tale of a princess who had to divide her loyalty between her homeland and her adopted country." Two very small corner bumps, very small bump on fore-edge of front board. Dust jacket has minor browning on spine, a few areas of edge wrinkling, bump at one corner, a few tiny line indentations on front panel, minor rubbing.

179 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, map. "Cochise was a name that struck terror into hearts across the Southwest. Yet in the autumn of 1872, Brigadier General Oliver Otis Howard and his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Joseph Alton Sladen, entered Arizona's rocky Dragoon Mountains in search of the elusive Chirichua Apache chief. Accompanied only by a guide and two Apache scouts, they sought to convince Cochise that the bloody fighting between his people and the Americans must stop. After twelve years of war, Cochise had already reached that conclusion, but he had found no American official he could trust. Known as the 'Christian general' during the Civil War, General Howard was a man of courage, honesty, and compassion. When he went bravely to visit Cochise, who later recalled that 'to do so might have caused his death', he won the Indian's sincere respect. Howard's devoted aide, Joseph Sladen, maintained a journal during their two-month quest from Fort Tularosa, New Mexico, to Cochise's stronghold. During the time he spent with Cochise and his Chokonen band, Sladen had the opportunity to observe the chief among his people. A student of medicine and human nature, Sladen found much ot admire in Apache culture. His anecdotes about Cochise offer a perspective on the man that no other account provides." 393 pp + index, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "His Royal Highness Prince George, Duke of Cambridge...was heir presumptive to the British throne until the birth of his cousin Victoria. His life spanned her reign, and for thirty-nine years he served as commander in chief of her army. In his public life, the Royal George was crusty - even reactionary, and often an embarrassment to his cousin. He was acutely conscious of his position and jealous of his royal prerogat ives, and he resisted every single change Victoria's governments tried to bring to the organization of the army. But as a person he was warm and generous. He was genuinely loved by his troops for his concern with their welfare and his effor t s t o i mprove the conditions of army life...a skillful, thorough, and urbane biography, a ticket of admission to the great events of the Victorian age and to the homes of the Royal Family." 368 pp, 9 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "(T)he panoramic story of the courageous U.S. Army Engineers and civilian contractors who toiled in the tense months after Pearl Harbor to build a 1,500-mile emergency supply line through the rugged Canadian Rockies to isolated military bases in Alaska. The construction of this winding gravel road - GI's called it the ALCAN - was very much an all-American adventure: blacks, whites, and natives working together under the harshest extremes of climate and terrain - racing to bolster Alaska's defenses and deter another Japanese attack on North American soil. The Alaska Highway - with its hundreds of bridges, chain of airfields, and oil refinery and pipeline system (known as CANOL) - opened to traffic in late 1942 and was in full use one year later. Though one of the greatest feats of twentieth-century macro-engineering, this huge project sparked as much protest as patriotism. Critics argued that the road was in the wrong place and would have little postwar value; a well-publicized investigation of CONOL's excesses gave a critical boost to the career of Senator Harry S. Truman." Very light wrinkling at top of spine, very small bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, light fading to spine color.

Even prior to publication, the book was the subject of intense controversy. In it, Velikovsky suggested a catastrophic history of the solar system, which at once resolved innumerable historical, astronomical, and geological enigmas, while also challenging more than a few hallowed scientific dogmas. Through a concerted campaign of letter writing, a successful boycott of the original publisher's textbook department was undertaken by an elite group of American astronomers. Even as (it) hover ed at the top of the national best-sellers lists, the publisher was forced to suspend publication of the book, and another firm, which had no vulnerable textbook division, took it on.
