TWO TALES. RIP VAN WINKLE AND THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW., Irving, Washington. Introduction by Alexander Eliot.
141 Irving, Washington. Introduction by Alexander Eliot. TWO TALES. RIP VAN WINKLE AND THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW.
San Diego Harcourt Brace Jovanovich 1984 0151922802 / 9780151922802 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Barry Moser.
54 pp + b&w plates and "Notes on the Prints", 11" H. "Washington Irving's two tales, 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' and 'Rip Van Winkle' have remained a permanent feature on the American literary landscape long after the bulk of his twenty-four volume work has faded into scholarly obscurity. Present-day readers can be grateful that Irving forsook the study of law for literature on the basis of these two works alone. Edgar Allen Poe called him 'the most deservedly eminent among all the pioneers of American literature', and he was accepted as a peer by contemporaries Sir Walter Scott and Lord Byron. Irving kept a sketchbook of his travels, and his painter's eye has attracted such master illustrators as Barry Moser, whose wood engravings were created especially for this volume and who also designed the text." A few tiny minor scuffs to top edge of boards, remainder mark on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, small ghost sticker mark on fornt panel, tiny scuff and a tiny white dot in title on front panel, minor soiling on rear panel.

THE STORY OF FITCH LOVELL, 1784-1970., Keevil, Ambrose.
146 Keevil, Ambrose. THE STORY OF FITCH LOVELL, 1784-1970.
Phillimore, (Chichester, 1972), first edition.
304 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w plates. "Company histories are often as dull and stale as a collection of old annual reports, having been dutifully compiled by a professional author from official records. Rarely is a major company fortunate enough to have an ex-Chairman who, after a lifetime in the business, is both willing and able to put pen to paper and record the events, recount the anecdotes and recall the excitement of its beginnings, its growth and its success. Sir Ambrose Keevil has done just this for the Fitch Lovell Group - company by company, from their beginnings as small family businesses in the 18th and 19th centuries, through to the period of vigorous growth and eventua l merger within his own lifetime. He has provided a highly readable and entertaining account of an important piece of London's commercial history, and of the history of the provisions trade. It is also a vivid and moving human story of the ordinary (and extraordinary) men who built up the several components, now united in the highly successful group of companies that plays such a powerful part in the contemporary food industry." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has old price sticker on front flap, minor edge wear/wrinkling, soiling around edge of laminate. NF/VG-

The Royal Navy's blockade of enemy ports cont inues, and a new anti-slavery bill further stretches the hard-pressed fleet's resources, as more ships are required elsewhere to suppress that profitable trade. Estranged from his wife and child, and plagued by the fear of blindness, Vice- A d m i r a l R ichard Bolitho is ordered once more to the Cape of Good Hope to establish a permanent naval force there following the success of his previous mission. He leaves behind the contempt of society and the bitter memories of a friendship b et ra ye d, a nd , w ith the mistress he will not forsake, takes passage on the ill-fated 'Golden Plover'. With them are others eager to quit the land: Valentine Keen, for whom command at the Cape is both promotion and escape from his own trou ble d m arr iag e, the fa it hfu l Allday, and young Stephen Jenour, who finds in this dangerous voyage a passage to maturity. When shipwreck and diaster overtake 'Golden Plover', a hundred-mile reef off the coast of Africa becomes a powerful symb ol o f cr isis and su rviv al, cla imin g alike the innocent and the damned. Beyond the reef little remains, only raw courage and reckless hope, and the certainty that for those in peril and for those at home life has changed irrevocably."
