211 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "The first section gives a detailed account of chronometer testing for wristwatches in Europe, primarily Swi tzerland. Information about testing methods, procedures, and guidelines, as well as participating makers, are based on research from the yearly reports of Swiss testing agencies between 1925 and present, and from the Swiss Observatories' reports ke pt between 1941 and 1967. The second part presents chronometer wristwatches by known makers each of which has been tested according to the guidelines of Swiss testing agencies. The types of errors found in the testing process and their possible reasons are pointed out. Follwing the theoretic-scientific presentation of the different testing methods, the reader learns the practical side of chronometer testing. At the end, the reader will want to test his own chronometer wristwatch. (A)lso will teach the collector to distinguish chronometer wristwatches and non-chronometer wristwatches from various countries. In addition to the many photographs in the illustration section, a list of over 300 Swiss watch manufacturers who made chronome ter wristwatches will be very useful. The reader also receives hints about fakes and forgeries." A heavy book which may require extra postage depending on destination. Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. ENGLISH-CANADIAN FURNITURE OF THE GEORGIAN PERIOD., Webster, Donald Blake. Foreword by Charles F. Hummel.
145 Webster, Donald Blake. Foreword by Charles F. Hummel. ENGLISH-CANADIAN FURNITURE OF THE GEORGIAN PERIOD.
McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Toronto, 1979, first edition.
232 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070829802 Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, b&w drawings. "This handsome, extensively researched book shows that the heritage of fine craftsmanship in English-Canadian furniture extends back almost to the earliest periods of settlement. Donald Webster focuses on the styles and craftsmanship of English-Canadian furniture up to about 1830. The stylistic influences, as might be expected, were British and A m e r i c a n , but the materials used and the degree of ornamentation reflected local conditions. Canada at that time was a thinly populated series of colonies where people were still coping with the problems of taming the land and surviving th e wi nt er s. Th er e were few centres of affluence where people aspired to the finer things in life. Nonetheless there have come down to us examples of fine furniture clearly Canadian in origin and displaying the craftsmanship of skilled cabinet- ma ker s r ath er t han th e rough simplicity of pioneer furniture. Many pieces are outstanding for their handsome proportions and simple but elegant ornamentation. This is a book for all those who love fine furniture. Not only does (the author) sh ow a nd d escr ibe m ore than 3 00 excellent examples of Canadian Georgian furniture, but he also explores in detail the stylistic influences and the materials used, and explains some of the procedures used in identifying and dating early Cana dian furn iture ." MEDIAEVAL FLOOR TILES., Wight, Jane A.
148 Wight, Jane A. MEDIAEVAL FLOOR TILES.
St. Martin's Press, New York, 1975, first American edition.
179 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour illustrations. "Mediaeval floor tiles have been unjustly neglected both in print and in situ, and (this) book, is, astonishingly, the first full-scale appreciation of the subj ect since 1858. The tiles themselves have been maltreated over the centuries and it is only comparatively recently that their great variety - and often beauty - and the sophistication of some of the methods of production have been appreciated. S o m e Victorian ceramic firms faultlessly and relentlessly copied a number of mediaeval designs - a compliment that Miss Wight shows the originals could well have done without as they were likely to be prised up to make way for the glossy nineteen th -c en tury copies. The book described the methods of manufacture of the various types of mediaeval tile from the earliest mosaic to the elaboration of the later inlaid varieties, and traces the development of design in the main areas of tile ma k ing . Mis s Wight has drawn many examples herself and the groups of illustrations in the book show clearly how a particular subject or symbol - for instance the fleur-de-lis of the Virgin Mary - was used and developed in an incredibly wide variety o f wa ys . F or the first time the mass of tiles is approached with an enthusiasm for their artistic achievement as well as their technical categorization, and the Gazetteer lists a comforting number of places where - if we take the trouble to lo ok downw ard as w ell as upward - we can still see examples of most of the types of mediaeval tile." Very small light stain on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has two very small edge tears archivally taped, minor edge wrinkling, faint soft crea se down f ront panel . Very Good+/Very Good
