123 Gagnon, Georgette and Rath, Dan. NOT WITHOUT CAUSE: DAVID PETERSON'S FALL FROM GRACE.
Toronto HarperCollins 1991 0002158426 / 9780002158428 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
408 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The stunning defeat of David Peterson's powerful Liberal government on September 6, 1990 broke many of the old rules for Canadian elections - and provided the first glimpse of how future elections will be fought. At the center of the story: Liberal leader David Peterson. Young, handsome and rich, he embodied the glory years of the 1980s when Yuppies, BMWs and image politics ruled. His decision to 'go early', to call an election only three years into his mandate, set the wheels in motion. His campaign attracts some of Canada's leading political players: campaign chair Kathy Robinson, whose pivotal position becomes a hotseat as the Liberal slide begins; former Trudeau pollster Martin Goldfarb, anxious to keep a Liberal government in power; David MacNaughton, Goldfarb critic and rival; Bob Nixon, the tough and respected treasurer faced with scuttling his balanced budget in a last-ditch vote-buying attempt; aide Vince Borg, Peterson's long-time friend, who tries to protect the premier from protesters and Liberals alike. These key players and an army of policy experts, strategists, party members, candidates and reporters tangle and clash in the race for power. (The) gripping account of how the Peterson Liberals did not anticipate or prepare for the new trends emerging in Canada's electoral process: the increasing power of special-interest groups, campaign strategies that attack incumbents without offering alternatives, negative advertising, the critical importance of perceptions and the media, an electorate with declining party allegiances and the rise of non-traditional parties. It's also the reavealing tale of how Ontario's New Democratic and Progressive Conservative parties ran campaigns that became a perfect match for the volatile mood of voters." Remainder mark on bottom of text block at spine. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top of spine.

YEAR OF THE HYENAS: A NOVEL OF MURDER IN ANCIENT EGYPT., Geagley, Brad.
124 Geagley, Brad. YEAR OF THE HYENAS: A NOVEL OF MURDER IN ANCIENT EGYPT.
Simon & Schuster, New York, 2005, first edition.
291 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 074325080X The author's first novel. "From the oldest known court transcripts in history, Egyptologists have long known about the mysterious death of Ramses III, involving intrigue, am bition, greed, and crimes of passion on a huge, though hidden, scale. In (this book), Brad Geagley takes this event - a struggle that nearly brought ancient Egypt to its knees - as the backdrop for a story that is every bit as captivating a s t h e d i stant civilization it resurrects. At the heart of the novel is Semerket, the so-called Clerk of Investigations and Secrets, a detecive half-paralyzed by problems of his own, with a reputation for heavy drinking and tactless behavior t ow a rd s th e g re at, the powerful, and the holy, a kind of Sam Spade of the ancient world, deeply (and dangerously) addicted to the truth. Hard-bitten, deeply flawed, he is retained by the authorities to investigate what is considered an ins ign ifi ca nt mu rde r of an elderly, insignificant Theban priestess. They fail to inform him, however, that they don't expect him to solve the case. In fact, they don't want him to...." A few tiny marks on free rear endpaper, minor wrinkling as t to p/bo tto m o f s pine , min or edge soiling. Dust jacket has some minor edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very Good+

It is both an antholo gy for the general reader to dip into and a companion to historical studies. Gay and grumbling, high-flown and understated, dramatic and humdrum, comic and tragic, these pieces illustrate the British temper in war - a business unpremeditate d a n d o f ten bungled at the beginning, conducted prodigally and doggedly but without neurosis, and then finished and done with. They start with the brilliant switch from the Meuse to the Danube which confounded the Europe of 1704 and end with Ko r ea w he r e ag ain the world has seen the characteristic stubborness without display of ruthlessness or heroics..." His water-finding dance was finished, and the dry land would soon be fertile again. Now he was building housing and a fort for the colonists he had brought. Nothing could have seemed more peaceful. But there was no peace. Wizenbeak stood accused of being a dangerous wizard, and the Witchfinders had him marked as their target. One army was sent against him and a larger one was on the way. Against that might, Wizenbeak had only a tiny force. Wizenbeak's men prepared - as, in his own way, did Wizenbeak..." 176 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Judaism, has flourished for millennia in a myriad of environments; each has contributed something to the Jewish tradition. Far from being a religion ossified in the world of the Bible; it has produced countless legends and stories, built up on Bible inspiration but reflecting the ideas of the cultures within which they emerged. (This book) explores the core of the Jewish faith by retelling the stories made up and told by Jews throughout the world. The author develops essential ideas of Judaism, including the creation of the universe, the history of man, the history of Israel and the future of Israel. He retells the familiar Biblical stories surrounding the great Biblical personalities such as Abraham, Moses and Elijah. He then goes on to show how their ideas and their characters were developed in the legends and folklore surrounding the Torah, and elaborated throughout the rabbinical tradition. With its great variety of stories told in clear and simple style, written for Jew and Gentile alike, (it) provides a fascinating insight into the wealth and vitality of Judaism." 93 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. A tongue-in-cheek take-off of the 'Famous Regiments' series. "The untrammelled deserts of the Army List (restricted) can offer no oasis of information; Whitehall's hallowed sanctuary can only look askance at the casual enquirer who asks: 'Who are the Queen's Malabars?' In all the dark corners of the earth, in all the torrid zones of the extremities previously defended, nay, patronised by the British Army, the 200th Foot have always distinguished themselves by their steadiness in adversity, by their utter fearlessness in the face of the foe, and by their universal joie de vivre, elan and esprit de corps. It was the 'Old 200th' who put Waterloo on the map (27 miles to the south-east of its original position), who held Barnard Castle against the attacking hordes of Bashi-Bazouks - even when the supply of Gevrey Chambertin '38 gave out, who fought the Royalists to a standstill at Chalgrove and defeated the Ironsides in one afternoon, the fighting regiment who walked around the Maginot Line even before the demolition of the Siegfried Line had been completed. With the honesty bred of such men as these one can truly say: 'There has never been a regiment like the Queen's Malabars' - and there can certainly never have been a regimental history like this." PALACE EXTRAORDINARY: THE STORY OF ST JAMES'S., Graves, Charles.
136 Graves, Charles. PALACE EXTRAORDINARY: THE STORY OF ST JAMES'S.
Cassell, London, 1963, first edition.
245 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "St James's Palace is one of London's most famous landmarks, its Tudor clock-tower familiar to residents and visitors in its dramatic position at the far end of St James's Street. T here is, however, no other building in London of comparable age about which so little is known, since the public is rarely allowed beyond the well-known facade. Ironically enough, the site on which Henry VIII had the palace built for Anne B o l e y n w a s once occupied by a nunnery, but the odour of sanctity seems soon to have dispersed and its history revolves around ladies of a lighter kind. Here lived Prince Henry, the brilliant elder son of James I who, had he survived to inh e ri t th e th ro n e, w ould probably have altered completely the course of history. But on his death his brother Charles took the fatal path which led finally to imprisonment in the Guard Room at St James's, from where he walked across the park to th e sca ff old . In 16 97 the palace was officially designated the Court of St James's and from then until the accession of Victoria was the sovereign's official residence. Here died George III, the record of whose last mad years makes poigna nt read in g in th is p os t-F reud ian age. But was it on him alone that the curse of madness lay? What was behind the ghastly murder of Sellis, the Duke of Cumberland's servant, found dead in bed with his head nearly severed from his body? Th e r iddle of his deat h has ne ver been solv ed but it seems likely that the royal Duke was himself implicated. Although the main flood of history has been diverted to other channels and the palace now lives mostly in the past, there are yet lin ks w ith th e tw entie th ce ntury: if the pala ce gh ost - for there is, of course, a ghost - looks over the shoulder of an official in the Lord Chamberlain's office when plays are being scrutinized before performance, the bawdy situations in t hem w ill har dly c ause h er to raise a n eye brow. Life at St James's was always like that." Samll store label on front pastedown, a few tiny foxing marks on top of textblock. Dust jacket has areas of light edge wear/wrinkling, very light ru bbing, tiny pu ncture on spi ne. V ery Good /Very Good
