ANDRE BIELER: AN ARTIST'S LIFE AND TIMES., Smith, Frances K. Introduction by Michael Bell.
123 Smith, Frances K. Introduction by Michael Bell. ANDRE BIELER: AN ARTIST'S LIFE AND TIMES.
Toronto Merritt 1980 092088606X / 9780920886069 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Andre Bieler.
176 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions, b&w photographs. "This study of the life and work of Andre Bieler, one of Canada's most important living artists, spans eighty-three years of his life and art in Europe, the United States and Canada. It studies him against the flowering of twentieth-century Canadian art, a fascinating history in itself. (S)tarts with (his) birth in Switzerland in 1896, tracing his European family roots, his World War I experiences and his traditional artist's apprenticeship in Europe, his arrival in Canada as a young artist and subsequent exploration of the rural 'habitant' way of life in Quebec's L'ile d'Orleans and on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Most important, the author shows us the extraordinary creative energy of Andre Bieler, his exuberance and intense love of people and life that, even in his eighties, keep him experimenting in art, traveling across Canada, Europe and Mexico in search of his subject, and which define him as an artist of classic, versatile and sustained talent." Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, 1" faint line indentation on front panel, tiny dent/closed perforation on rear hinge.

240 pp, 8vo (8 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "This is its first publication in an English-speaking country, and the small first edition, published in Paris in 1930, was never widely distributed in the United States....It was written in the su mmer of 1927, a very special year for avant-garde writing....Lucey itself is a small village in central France, located over the hill from where Miss Stein was staying, and over another hill from where the distinguished French playwright Pa u l C l a u d e l was staying, which explains the references to Claudel and to hills in the text....Nothing much happens in the book. It would be impossible to prepare an outline of the plot....The action is purely interior: a great deal is notice d, d i ge st ed , ab so rbed, compared. The result can therefore be taken on the one hand simply as an account of being in the countryside (at Bilignin), or on the other hand as an investigation into the interlocking nature of things and into the way s t ha t l ang uag e can be used for description...." THE AUTUMN OF CENTRAL PARIS: THE DEFEAT OF TOWN PLANNING 1850-1970., Sutcliffe, Anthony.
127 Sutcliffe, Anthony. THE AUTUMN OF CENTRAL PARIS: THE DEFEAT OF TOWN PLANNING 1850-1970.
McGill-Queen's University Press, Montreal, 1971.
372 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0773501150 Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions, maps/plans, fold-out map at rear. "This volume sets a contemporary problem of urban life squarely in its historical cont ext - the problem of the city centre. The author asks how it is that the central business district of Paris, unlike the City of London, should have survived so long without being rebuilt, despite demands of commerce and convenience. He de a l s w i t h the interplay of changing urban functions, municipal responsibilities, planning decisions, demands for preservation, and shifting economic pressures, from the time of Haussmann to the present day. The book covers a period in the his to ry o f P ar is w h ich has been almost completely ignored so far. Much has been written about Haussmann's work in Paris (1853-70), but no one has tried to assess the value of what he achieved in the light of the efforts of his successors. As in ter est i n t he pro ble m of city centres grows, and the question of whether to redevelop or conserve is being posed with increasing urgency in many historic towns, the experience of Paris takes on great relevance. By setting contemporary con trov ersi es i n t heir hi stor ical c ontext and examining social and economic developments as well as municipal policies, the book will be of interest to the town planner and the social scientist, as well as to the historian or indeed anyone int erest ed in the stud y of urba n lif e." HEROINES OF MERCY STREET: THE REAL NURSES OF THE CIVIL WAR., Toler, Pamela D.
130 Toler, Pamela D. HEROINES OF MERCY STREET: THE REAL NURSES OF THE CIVIL WAR.
New York Little Brown 2016 0316392073 / 9780316392075 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
287 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. Companion volume to the PBS series "Mercy Street". "The nurses of the Civil War ushered in a new era for medicine in the midst of tremendous hardship. While (America) was at war, these women learned to advocate and care for patients in hostile settings, saved countless lives, and changed the profession forever. They regularly fell ill with no one to nurse them in return, seethed in anger at the indifference and inefficiency that left wounded men on the battlefield without care, and all too often mourned for those they could not rescue. (This book) tells the true stories of the nurses at Mansion House, the Alexandria, Virginia, hotel turned wartime hospital. Women like Dorothea Dix, Mary Phinney, and Anne Reading rushed to be of service to their country during the war, meeting challenges every step of the way that would discourage less determined souls. They saw casualties on a scale Americans had never seen before; diseases like typhoid and dysentery were rampant; and working conditions were abysmal - both physically and emotionally. Drawing on the diaries, letters, and books written by these nursing pioneers, (the author) has created a fascinating portrait of true heroines, shining a light on their personal contributions during one of (America's) most turbulent periods." Very small ink remainder mark on top of text block. Dust jacket has a very small soft corner crease at top of front flap.

AUGUST 1914., Tuchman, Barbara W.
134 Tuchman, Barbara W. AUGUST 1914.
London Constable 1962 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
499 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). Map endpapers, b&w plates, maps. "It is not too much to say that the first thirty days of battle determined the future course of the First World War, the terms of the peace and the shape of the nations of our time. The bloody catalogue of the battles of August 1914 contains the almost legendary names of Liege, Mons, the Battle of the Frontiers, Charleroi, and Tannenberg, where generals' reputations were made or broken, and opportunities grasped or missed. Here is the indomitable Joffre rebuilding his shattered armies, Samsonov committing suicide after the annihilation of his army at Tannenberg (a staggering defeat that, perhaps, gave victory to Russia's allies), von Kluck stubbornly committed to his fatal mistake with Paris within his grasp, and Admiral Souchon in the 'Goeben' setting his desperate and fateful course for Constantinople. Here is Sir John French steadfastly refusing to work with his French ally, the brilliant Lanrezac 'limoge', perhaps, for being right too often, the sick Gallieni resolutely preparing the defence of Paris; and Winston Churchill, 'the only British minister to have a perfectly clear conviction of what Britain should do', acting upon his conviction without hesitation. The story begins with a brilliant and majestic set piece describing the funeral of Edward VII, which was attended by all the royalty, nobility and aristocracy of Europe, and marked the end of a splendid era. The reader is then swept into the magnificent narrative: firstly of the plans of the German, French, British and Russian General Staffs, all prepared some ten years before the war, none allowing for the contingencies of others; then of the tense and dramatic hours and minutes in Berlin, Paris, London and St. Petersburg that led to the outbreak of war; and finally of the invasion of Belgium, the advance through France according to plan, and the huge clash on the Eastern front. The narrative ends on the eve of the Battle of the Marne which just saved the war from being won by Germany. By that time the original plans of all the belligerents were in ruins." Book is slightly curved, minor edge wear, slight fading to colour on top of spine, minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, several small and tiny edge tears, light browning on spine and flap-folds/edges, light soiling.

171 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "Paris welcomed Gerald Murphy, whose billboard-sized cubist icon dominated the 1924 Salon des Independants and launched a brief but brilliant career; Stuart Davis, who explored the continuity between cubist painting, lithography, and jazz at the atelier Desjobert,; Man Ray, who abandoned oils to begin 'painting with light' in his movies and rayographs; and Alexander Calder, whose wire circuses and portraits inspired critics to acknowledge art's inherent playfulness. (This book) documents the work and influence of these four notables of the avant-garde who startle and delight us even today...Richly illustrated and beautifully designed, this volume is a feast for the eyes and the intellect. It is published on the occasion of the exhibition...organized by The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. America's first modern art museum."
