SASKATOON: A CENTURY IN PICTURES., Delainey, William P.; Duerkop, John D.; Sarjeant, William A.S.
121 Delainey, William P.; Duerkop, John D.; Sarjeant, William A.S. SASKATOON: A CENTURY IN PICTURES.
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Western Producer Prairie Books 1982 0888330901 / 9780888330901 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
177 pp, 11 1/4" H. "Saskatoon began as a vision of the Temperance Colonization Society. Its members formulated a scheme for a colony in the West where a way of life free from the evils of alcohol might be fostered. Early in the spring of 1882, an advance party travelled by rail and wagon to examine their grant of land and to choose the administrative site for the settlement. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the temperance ideals had become secondary to boosterism. By 1905 discussions were underway to amalgamate the original Nutana settlement with 'Saskatoon' and Riversdale on the west side of the river. Their combined population of 4,500 allowed Saskatoon a charter under city status in 1906. By 1908 the city was served by three railway companies and the 'Hub City' station was one of the busiest in the West. (This book) brings the story of the city to life through nearly 300 photographs. It registers changes through two world wars, during the periods of prosperity and recession, into the optimism of the fifties and sixties and the more speculative expansion of the seventies." Christmas gift inscription in ink on front free endpaper, book is lightly cocked, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor glue residue at top edge of rear endpapers. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine ans flap-folds, light rubbing including faint scratches, 2" edge tear with old tape on inside, two tiny edge tears.

NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS., Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.)
122 Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.) NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS.
Philadelphia Chilton 1966 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
242 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Napoleon, that master strategist, created twenty-six Marshals of France between the years 1804 and 1815. These men, who held the highest positions in the Empire after Napoleon himself, came from diverse, and often humble backgrounds. Among the twenty-six were officers, sergeant majors, rankers, apprentices, a farmer's boy, a brewer, a poet, a smuggler, an actor, a barber, and a prince. The two qualities they all had in common were courage and ambition. During the years when Napoleon was conqueror of most of Europe, the marshals acquired titles and great riches, and in the end there was only one who was not to some extent corrupted by greed or ambition, and who remained loyal to the man who had elevated them all to power. Through their stories, and the eyes of the author, the entire panorama of French history, from the first days of the French Revolution until the restoration of the Bourbons, is seen. The color and excitement of the great battles, the strategy, the roll of history is here in (this book), the first to follow the actual careers of the marshals from July, 1789, until their deaths." Light cigarette odor, a few pages with small a soft wrinkle at top corner, very light browning to top and fore-edge of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light browning at top edge, very light edge wear/wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

SECRETS OF THE GOTHA. PRIVATE LIVES OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES OF EUROPE., Diesbach, Ghislain de. Translated from the French by Margaret Crosland.
125 Diesbach, Ghislain de. Translated from the French by Margaret Crosland. SECRETS OF THE GOTHA. PRIVATE LIVES OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES OF EUROPE.
New York Barnes & Noble. 1993 156619086X / 9781566190862 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
392 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "For this witty account of the European nobility, (the author) has taken as his inspiration that most illustrious of social registers: the 'Almanch de Gotha', first published in 1764 and still on the shelves of all who look back with nostalgia upon 'that happy period - when the monarchic principle was so firmly anchored in people's minds that it seemed impossible for a country to exist unless there was a sovereign, emperor, king, prince, or grand duke at its head'. The author, himself a scion of a princely family, has inherited a clear perspective of the main thoroughfares of history, and a great knowledge of its byways. He approaches his subject with a light touch, even at times with irreverence - for, in his own words: 'The secrets of the Gotha, whispered to me by the ghosts of long-dead chamberlains, evoke the spirit on an age whose frivolities alone have survived. The inheritance of the duchies of Schleswig or Holstein no longer vexes the world at large; but the fate of the unfortunate Electress of Hanover, shut up for thirty years by her husband for having shown too much enthusiasm for the handsome Koenigsmark, still moves us; and the madness of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the indecorous loves of Queen Isabella of Spain, or the eccentricities of Caroline, Princess of Wales, are more interesting today than the War of the Roses, the continence of Scipio or the virtues of Blanche of Castile. It is by their weaknesses that men are human, and kings cannot escape being men. But though their weaknesses may be the cause of their undoing, it is their humanity that most engages our sympathy today. Bad examples are the easiest to follow ; they are also the most amusing to relate." Dust jacket has slight fading to color and lettering on spine, minor edge wrinkling and minor browning on inside top edge.

In (this book), Dilks has selected excerpts from newspapers, speeches, letters and diaries to bring to life every one of those visits, giving preference wherever possible to Churchill's own voice - and what a voice it was. This is a book for anyone interested in Canada's history or fascinated by the phenomenon that was Winston Churchill." "(T)he story of a young Anglo-Irish beauty's visit to Delhi for the 1911 Royal Durbar, where a new King, George V, is to be proclaimed Emperor to reinforce the loyalty to the Crown of India's ruling Princes. For a fortnight of relentless ceremony, unheard of extravagance and imposing military spectacle, in the setting of a vast Tented City complete with its own farms, railway, telegraph and post offices, Lilah Wingfield meets many of the most remarkable colonial characters of the day, including some of the foremost Indian Princes, vying to stage the most lavish display to prove their devotion to the Raj. As the tents are dismantled, Lilah travels through India - to the dangerous Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, to Rajasthan, to the gory sites of the Mutiny and to stay with India's only female ruler, the Begum of Bhopal. Her diary shows her deepening awareness of the ambivalence of certain maharajahs towards British Rule even while she is being entertained royally in their lakeside palaces. Her Irish upbringing gives her an instictive feeling for the mixture of their longing for independence and an affection for the mother country." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. THE ARROW., Dow, James.
133 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1997 1550285548 / 9781550285543 Soft Cover Fine
166 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Here is the fascinating story of the rise and fall of the Arrow, the legendary interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe Canada in the fifties. The Arrow was an unprecedented success story for Canada's fledgling aviation industry. It was conceived by its builders as the culmination of an impressive string of world firsts. Faster than any previous aircraft, it represented the leading edge of technology and an achievement of the highest calibre. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time and which remains hard to fathom even today. The Diefenbaker government cancelled the Arrow, and everything was destroyed, including the planes themselves. Nothing was to remain. Working from official documents, archives, interviews and a wide range of unofficial sources, James Dow presents the authoritative story of A.V. Roe Canada and its projects. He describes how the Arrow was developed and why it was killed. Dow takes us behind the scenes to the real dynamics and rivalries which were a part of the Arrow from the beginning and which explain its fate. This edition of the definitive books on the subject has been updated with a new introduction."

THE ARROW., Dow, James.
134 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1979 0888622811 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter, which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer, built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success." Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, several small tears with creases at top edge, light edge wear, one small edge chip, protectedin a mylar sleeve.

Hamish Hamilton, London, 1969, first edition.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, color frontispiece, b&w plates, plans. "Travellers of every age have extolled the beauties of the chateaux of the Loire....By making use of their descriptions Mr. Dunlop shows us the chateaux as they were in their prime. He resurrects the vanished glories of Le Verger, Bury, Richelieu and Chanteloup, and assigns them their proper place in the mosaic. What was it that caused the King and his Courtiers to build s o l a v i s h ly in this region? By way of an answer, the reader is taken kite-hawking and stag hunting. What purpose did the immense size of the chateaux serve? The author takes us below stairs for a look at the great hierarchy of servants w h o ma i nt ai ne d a no ble household. These castles and palaces were the background to crucial historical events. Mr. Dunlop allows eye-witnesses to speak for themselves. We watch the Conspiracy of Amboise through the eyes of the English Ambass ad or ; w e ove rhe ar th e mur der of the duc de Guise with those who were in the next room. Thre Revolution is chronicled through the windows of Cheverny. Starting with Chinon in the days of Joan of Arc and ending with the restorations of the ni net een th c en tury , th is boo k give s the most comprehensive, and certainly the most original, picture of the Chateaux of the Loire. It is not an omnibus guide book - though it would be a very useful companion on a tour of the Loire Valley. It is not a tre ati se on styl e - but t he ar chitectural student may learn a lot from it. What it is is a book for the reader who wishes to take an intelligent interest in the buildings of one of the most beautiful and historic areas of France."
