THE WAY OF WITCHES., Epstein, Perle.
121 Epstein, Perle. THE WAY OF WITCHES.
Doubleday, Garden City, New York, 1972, first edition.
175 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0385078773 B&w illustrations. "Witchcraft is believed to have originated as far back as the paleolithic period. People have always held witches in awe and feared them at the same tim e. From their earliest beginnings and through the Biblical period, the Middle Ages, and the early history of the United States, witches were isolated from the community by their extraordinary powers for good and evil. The earliest witch trials t o o k place in southern France around 1245, and the Salem witch trials are a notorious chapter in our country's history. Witches were the first doctors and the first spiritual advisers and still maintain these roles in primitive societies. (The au th or ) has written a fascinating history of witches. Emphasizing the practical procedures of witchcraft, she describes their paraphernalia, rites, spells, and recipes; their habits and appearance; and the contrasting practices of witches from d iff ere nt parts of the world, from the Middle Ages to the present. And she writes of famous witches such as Zoroaster, Bluebeard, and Hartley, the kissing magician. This is a book for all those young readers who delight in the supernatural." 122 Erickson, Carolly. ROYAL PANOPLY: BRIEF LIVES OF THE ENGLISH MONARCHS.
New York St. Martin's Press, New York, 2006. 2006 0312316437 / 9780312316433 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
351 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Colour and b&w plates. "(This book) replaces the stereotypic images with true multifaceted portraits, bringing each of England's rulers to fully fleshed life. Here is the puny Charles I, nervous, tense, and socially awkward; the frail, slight Richard II, melancholic and sad; the homosexual James I with his handsome favorites; the stuttering William II and the stammering George VI. Here also is the choleric, violent William I (William the Conqueror), bred among the chaos of constant warfare in his native Normandy, ceaselessly embattled once he became King of England. The unkingly Henry III, mild and charitable, despised by his barons for his weakness. And the well-meaning, deeply affectionate Queen Anne, whose many children all died before they could reach adulthood and who was so heavy and gout-ridden that she had to be carried to her coronation. Each ruler's life has a unique story, and 'Royal Panoply' tells that story with award-winning historian Carolly Erickson's characteristic blend of scholarly authenticity, engaging prose, and psychological insight. The focus is not merely on the tale of each reign, but on each king's or queen's entire life, for some rulers did not come to the throne until middle age, and had already led full lives before their accession. Here they are in full panoply: feudal warriors, Renaissance icons, Regency dandies, and modern constitutional monarchs, fascinating characters all." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

"(This is) a survey of the uniforms worn by officers and men in the three combatant navies - Britain, France and S pain. John Fabb and Jack Cassin-Scott first set the uniforms in the context of life aboard a fighting ship during the Napoleonic wars - a severely disciplined, often brutal existence punctuated by battles, like Trafalgar, of terrifying blood i n e s s . They go on to describe the uniforms, rank by rank and nation by nation, from the splendour of the admiral in full dress, through each rank in full dress and undress versions until, at the bottom of the scale we find the starkly functio na l cl ot hi ng of the ordinary seaman. Particular care has been taken to present uniforms from original sources and Dress Regulations and, where appropriate, to show back views - so often neglected yet of much interest to, for example, modellers . In ad dit ion th e re is information on swords and decorations. In all cases the illustrations have been taken from contemporary sources." Brigadier Farrar-Hockely's skillful account of this decisive encounter, which includes a brilliant use of contemporary sources, not least among them the dramatic diaries of British soldiers, caused the 'Oxford Times' to comment: 'his book is not only a fine piece of military history; it is as exciting as a thriller'." Recruited in the kingdom of Nepal since the early ninetee nth century, these short, wiry hillmen have served the kings and queens of Britain with such loyalty, tenacity, and incredible bravery that often the sound of their battle cry 'Ayo Gurkhali!' The Gurkhas fought beside the British in the Indian Mutiny, in France and Mesopotamia during World War I, and in every theater during World War II. They have fought as well in countless small wars - 'the sav ag e w ar s of p eace' - including the Northwestern Frontier of India, Malaya, Borneo, and most recently the Falkland Islands. Their courage is legendary. Since 1911, when they first became eligible, thirteen Gurkhas have been awarded the Victori a C ro ss , a n unm atc hed record. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
130 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I., Ferguson, Niall.
132 Ferguson, Niall. THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I.
Basic Books, New York, 1999, book club edition.
563 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, tables, graphs. "More than four million Americans were mobilized in 1917-18, of whom more than 100,000 were killed - double the number who died in Vietnam. This was the fir st, bloody step on the road to globalism which would characterize our foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. Even American literature was transformed by the impact of the war on writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Internat i o n a l l y , more than any other event, the First World War made the twentieth century what it was: It toppled the four great empires of the Old World and left a fifth - the British - mortgaged to the hilt. More than nine million men lost their li ve s, y et n on e of its stated objectives were met. Rather, it spawned seven decades of Communist rule in Russia, the rise of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich, and the horror of the Holocaust. Now, as the century draws to a close, the time is righ t f or a r adi cal re ass essment of the 'Great War'. In (this book, the author) explodes the myths of 1914-18. He argues that the fatal conflict between Britain and Germany was far from inevitable. It was Britain's declaration of war that needl essl y t urne d a cont inen tal conflict into a world war, and it was Britain's economic mismanagement and military inferiority that necessitated American involvement, forever altering the global balance of power. Ferguson vividly brings back to li fe on e of the semi nal c atast roph es of the century, not through a dry citation of chronological chapter and verse, but through a series of brilliant chapters that answer the key questions: Why did the war start? Why did it continue? And why did it st op? How d id th e Germ ans ma nage to kill more soldiers than they lost but still end up defeated in November 1918? Above all, why did men fight?" 318 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0395353149 B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "(A) lively and authoritative account of the United States Navy from Independence throught the War of 1812. During this turbulent period the new American republic fought three wars - declared and undeclared - against the Barbary States, France, and Great Britain. The first two were entirely naval affairs; the third, a combination of military action on land and sea. In each the s u r v i v a l of the young nation was due in large part to the efforts of the navy and the exploits of such men as Stephen Decatur, Isaac Hull, Thomas Truxtun, and Oliver Hazard Perry. William Fowler is a historian with the capacity to convert me ti cu lo us r es ea rch into flowing narrative. Here he fuses political and naval history, looking at political forces in the rapidly expanding U.S. society as well as at naval ordnance, operations, and the fateful and exciting battles at sea. He de als to o w ith th e o ften neglected human aspects of life aboard ship, focusing on those who served in the forecastle as well as the great men on the quarterdeck." "The success of the First Crusade, and its capture of Jerusalem in 1099, has been conventionally explained by its ideological and political motivation. This book looks at the Fi rst Crusade primarily as a military campaign and asks why it was so successful. Modern writing about the Crusade has tended to emphasise the moral dimension and the development of the idea of the crusade but its fate was ultimately decide d o n t h e f ield of battle. This book looks at the nature of war at the end of the eleventh century and the military experience of all the contending parties in order to explain its extraordinary success.
