THE CONSTANTINE AFFLICTION. A PIMM AND SKYE ADVENTURE., Payton, T. Aaron.
121 Payton, T. Aaron. THE CONSTANTINE AFFLICTION. A PIMM AND SKYE ADVENTURE.
San Francisco Night Shade Books 2012 1597804002 / 9781597804004 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ Jacket art by Mark Nelson.
279 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "1864. London is a city in transition. The Constantine Affliction - a strange malady that kills some of its victims and physically transforms others into the opposite sex - has spread scandal and upheaval through society. Scientific marvels and disasters, such as clockwork courtesans, the alchemical fires of Whitechapel, electric carriages, and acidic monsters lurking in the Thames, have forever altered the face of the city. Pembroke 'Pimm' Halliday is an aristocrat with an interest in criminology, who uses his keen powers of observation to assist the police or private individuals - at least when he's sober enough to do so. Ellie Skyler, who hides her gender behind the byline 'E. Skye', is an intrepid journalist driven by both passion and necessity to uncover the truth, no matter where it lies. When Pimm and Skye stumble onto a dark plot that links the city's most notorious criminal overlord with the Queen's new consort, famed scientist Sir Bertram Oswald, they soon find the forces of both high and low society arrayed against them. Can they save the city from the arcane machinations of one of history's most infamous monsters - and uncover the shocking origins of 'The Constantine Affliction'?" Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, soft wrinkle at top of rear panel, minor rubbing.

THE STORY OF BUCKINGHAM PALACE: THE ROYAL HOME THROUGH SEVEN REIGNS., Peacocke, Marguerite D.
122 Peacocke, Marguerite D. THE STORY OF BUCKINGHAM PALACE: THE ROYAL HOME THROUGH SEVEN REIGNS.
Odhams, London, (1951).
288 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, plans. "...tells the story of Buckingham Palace through the reigns of seven British monarchs, describing how and why it was built and the purposes for which it has been used since its foundation. It traces the history of the Palace from its earliest origins as the private home of Sir William Blake, erected in 1623 on a site that was formerly the scene of a rowdy, disreputable pleasure-garden. And it reacalls three centuries of replanning and rebuilding from which emerged the Palace that today is the premier residence of the British Royal Family...this is not the impersonal history of a building...it is the warm, human story of all the people who, through the years, have helped to make the Palace what it is today - from architects to ambassadors, from statemen to stonemasons, from kings and queens to kitchen maids and cabinet-makers..." 1 1/2" split to paper on inside front hinge, some very light browning to endpapers, slight small bump to corners, light foxing marks on edges of textblock, very light browning to edges of spine and boards. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, several small tears and one small chip, slight darkening to spine and flap-folds, small crease on front flap and rear panel. 144 pp, oblong 8vo (8 1/2" H x 10 5/8" D). "Mary Biggar Peck has selected over 160 black and white photos from 1885 to 1955, dividing them into nine sections under headings such as, 'Rural Life', 'War and Disaster', and 'Ceremony and Celebration'. Each section is arranged, when possible, in chronological order. Fishermen and steelworkers, farmers and firemen, sailors and students, parents and children are captured at work, at school, and at play. Towns, bridges, buildings, parades, and picnics illuminate this glimpse of a vanished way of life. These, of course, are photographs of life in New Brunswick and, as such, they present a living history of that province and its people."

HEROES & AEROPLANES OF THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918., Phelan, Joseph A. Foreword by Sir Thomas Sopwith.
124 Phelan, Joseph A. Foreword by Sir Thomas Sopwith. HEROES & AEROPLANES OF THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918.
New York Grosset & Dunlap 1970 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Joseph A. Phelan.
128 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w drawings. "(A) vivid pictorial presentation of (aerial) warfare from the first use of aircraft in war - Italian reconnaissance against the Ottoman Empire in 1912 - to the Armistice in 1918. In striking color the great individual battles of the aces come alive: Immelman, von Richthofen, Voss and Boelcke; Bishop, Collishaw, McCudden, Ball and Beauchamp-Proctor; Rickenbacker; Guynemer, Nungesser and Garros. And the dogfights and sorties; Bloody April and the Fokker Scourge; the Lafayette Escadrille, the Storks, the Flying Circuses; the bombing raids; the balloon busters. The trials of combat and endurance and the men and aero-planes that made it all possible, changing the world's thinking about the methods of war. J.A. Phelan has created more than 400 superb paintings and drawings - executed with the drama and the meticu-lous detail of the artist who takes delight in his subject - for this richly illustrated book. The various aircraft of the Allies and Central Powers are shown in detail (top and side views, camouflage, national markings and pilots' decorations, engines, armament and structure) and in combat as they were flown by the aces. This volume presents an unduplicated view of the 1914-1918 war in the air, when man first captured control of the sky in order to control the ground." A few tiny tape marks from previous protective sleeve at corners of endpapers, scattered tiny light foxing marks on top of text block, one slight corner bump. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge.

They were more often abroad than not: in the Flanders of Marlborough and the Spain of Peterborough (who turned them into dragoons), in Gibraltar and the West Indies, in Burma and Afghanistan and Africa. Above all, in India. It was fitting that th eir 1st Battalion should have been the last British troops to leave the country which they had loved and hated for so long...." 130 Ream, Peter T. THE FORT ON THE SASKATCHEWAN: A RESCOURCE BOOK ON FORT SASKATCHEWAN AND DISTRICT.
Fort Saskatchewan Self-published 1974 Second Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
591 pp, 9 1/4" H. Inscribed on half title page: "With best wishes, Peter T. Ream". Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/plans. "Starting with the area's first industry and ending with the great industrial boom of the mid-twentieth century, Peter Ream brings alive the history of one of the oldest settled areas of Alberta. (He) narrates the early Indian and fur trade activity near the mouth of the Sturgeon River - then known as Birch Hills - where the plentiful supplies of spruce and birch bark made possible the building of canoes for the long trip down the North Saskatchewan River to the Hudson Bay. It was here in the spring of 1755 that Anthony Henday camped - the first white man to penetrate into what is now the Province of Alberta. Forty years later, in 1795, a trading fort, known as Fort Augustus was established by the North-West Company and in the same year the Hudson's Bay Company built Edmonton House close by. The first settlement took place in 1872 with the arrival of Francois and Joseph Lamoureux followed in 1891 by a group of settlers from Austria and still later by the Parry Sound Colony from Ontario. The book continues through the events of early settlement and development to (the early 1970s). This is a resource book - fully documented and appendixed. The material has been thoroughly researched from such sources as the national and provincial archives, municipal records and the early records of the Oblate Fathers of St. Albert." Slight bump to top corner of pages, light edge wear, small bump to top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light rubbing, one small and one or two tiny tears archivally taped, light edge wear/wrinkling, minor soiling on rear panel.

424 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps, genealogical chart. The first volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' "takes her to 1910, the year before her marriage, when she left Prince Edward Island. It recounts her schooldays in Cavendish, redolent with incidents, impressions, and romantic 'crushes' that found their way into her fiction; a year spent in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, with her father and stepmother; a year of study at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, where she trained to be a teacher, and another at Dalhousie University; her teaching years; a powerful infatuation with the son of a family she lived with; a long and mostly unhappy period of keeping house for her grandmother; and the publication of 'Anne of Green Gables'. The autobiographical content will fasciant every devoted reader of the Anne books. But the Montgomery journals are especially interesting because they provide a unique social history and the privilege of viewing closely the life of a remarkable woman. Comprising perhaps the most vivid and detailed memoir in Canadian letters, the journals will join 'Anne of Green Gables' in ensuring Montgomery's lasting place in Canadian liter-ature." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor soiling, light wrinkling and a few tiny tears at top of spine, some waviness on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

134 Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.) THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME III: 1921-1929.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1992 0195409361 / 9780195409369 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. The third volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' reveals "Montgomery in mature mid-life, (as) her personal and professional lives are becoming even more complex. (She) juggles the demands of motherhood, parish obligations, indifferent household help, grief at the loss of older friends and family, appeals by her PEI clan for advice and assistance - everyday struggles to balance a woman's social and domestic duties. There are also triumphs and trials more closely related to her position as a best-selling author: growing fame, the successful midwifery of her new heroines 'Emily' and 'Marigold' and a more adult novel, 'The Blue Castle'; the struggle to allocate time for correspondence with publishers, fans, pen-friends - and actually to 'write'. We trace the happy conclusion of her lawsuits against an unscrupulous publisher, and the disappointing outcome of the tempest-in-a-teapot suit arising from a minor automobile accident. There are more personal worries: the Rev. Ewan Macdonald's envy of his wife's publishing and social success; the dark shadow cast by his recurrent attacks of religious melancholia; her concern lest their sons evince similar tendencies. In mid-decade, Ewan Macdonald accepts a call to Norval, Ontario and Montgomery leaves 'dear Leaskdale' with mixed feelings. In these years, LMM turns more and more to her journal to record insights and opinions not voiceable by 'the angel of the house', as well as the brief epiphanies of delight in nature's beauty that have always sustained her. Her journal is an important example of life-writing - writing in the autobiographical mode - by a complex, sensitive, successful, and suprisingly contemporary writer." Minor bumping/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, scattered very tiny foxing marks on edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing.

THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME IV: 1929-1935., Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.)
135 Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.) THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME IV: 1929-1935.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1998 0195413814 / 9780195413816 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
439 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. The fourth volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' "covers a tumultuous period in the writer's life. By 1929 she was 54 years old and known world-wide as the author of 'Anne of Green Gables' and many other books, yet this was also a time of numerous setbacks: the stock market crash, a drop in royalties from her many books, the need to provide her two sons with a university education while her husband's modest church salary was often in arrears, and the fact that many loans she made to friends and family were not repaid. She faced personal crises in relations with her sons and her husband and there was furious controvery in her husband's parish, Norval Presbyterian Church. She also felt concerns over her own mental state and she became the unwilling object of a young woman's declarations of passionate love. Yet this was not a period without joy: the volume opens with happy travels to Prince Edward Island and western Canada and ends with her looking forward with great excitement to a new life in Toronto. Besides providing an intimate look into the daily life of one of the world's best-loved authors, these journals can also be read as a fascinating social history of the early twentieth century. For example, Montgomery's health concerns provide intriguing insights into the state of medical practices. Readers may shudder slightly when a bout of asthma is treated with strychnine tablets or a 'bad chill' brings out a compound of arsenic." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine.

136 Rutherford, Ward. HITLER'S PROPAGANDA MACHINE
New York Grosset & Dunlap 1978 0448146274 / 9780448146270 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
192 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Paul Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's Minister of Propaganda and Public Entertainment, refined the use of what he called the Big Lie to a fine art. Democracy was portrayed as evil, dictatorship as good. Books which did not conform with Nazi ideology were burned; radio broadcasts were made with the intention of cowing the German populace and frightening the peoples of the world. Mass rallies were staged in Berlin, Nuremberg and elsewhere to whip up enthusiasm for the military expansion of Germany and hysteria for the Third Reich and the Fuhrer. Magazines and newspapers played their role in a more subtle way, emphasizing Nazi triumphs and minimizing or obliterating criticism of the regime and its failures. Colorful posters were put up throughout Germany. Later the Nazis enlisted the support of other Europeans in the pan-German cause. All of these propaganda techniques were master-minded by Goebbels, whose genius in orchestrating propaganda in the mass media was acknowledged even by his enemies. In films, magazines, posters, rallies and speeches by Hitler and his followers, Goebbels developed a propaganda mechanism that has been copied by dozens of dictators since but never equalled in its cynicism and fury." Book is slightly cocked, has light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning to edges of text block, light cigarette odor. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, browning at edges, light edge wrinkling, creasing at top 4" of front hinge, light rubbing.

138 Schall, James V. DOES CATHOLICISM STILL EXIST?
New York Alba House 1994 0818906944 / 9780818906947 First Edition Soft Cover
265 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). "The focus of this book is Catholicism as it understands itself. If it is 'against' anything, it is against those priests, bishops, theologians, professors, laymen and yes, non Catholics and non believers, who explain what Catholicism says about itself falsely or wrongly or incompletely. Catholicism may or may not be inherently credible, but it should rise and fall on what it says of itself alone, not on an explanation of itself that is not what it really holds about itself. Jean Danielou in his book 'The Salvation of Nations' sought to state the essence of the problem of the Church today in the light of the famous sin against the Holy Spirit which could not be forgiven: 'Many see only the human side of the Church and reject it because of that: their sin is not the sin against the Spirit, and we can believe that they will be forgiven. The sin against the Spirit - would be the sin of those who are cognizant of the divine nature of the Church and yet refuse through pride to acknowledge it.' The issue of the existence of Catholicism, even at times for Catholics themselves, is increasingly at this level. Schall sheds light on the relevance of the Church today by pointing to its revolutionary stance vis-a-vis a culture with which it more and more often finds itself at odds." Very slight edgewear, slight wrinkling at top and bottom of spine, one small area of color loss at bottom of spine. VG

THE BATTLE FOR MOSCOW., Seaton, Albert, Col.
140 Seaton, Albert, Col. THE BATTLE FOR MOSCOW.
Sarpedon, New York, 1993, reprint.
294 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 096276132X B&w photographs, maps. "When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, it seemed as though the hopes and fears of both dictators were correct. Entire Soviet armies disintegrated before the military skill of the Germans. Three million prisoners were taken in the first six weeks. By early October, the Germans were on open roads to Moscow and the Soviet government had already begun to evacuate the interior.
