Twayne, New York, 1993.
136 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0805770216 "Born into a privileged family in Kent in 1886, Sassoon spent a largely unremarkable childhood. Upon completing his last year at the distinguished secondary school Marlborough Col lege, a schoolmaster wrote of him: 'shows no particular intelligence or aptitude for any branch of his work; seems unlikely to adopt any special career'. After two years at Cambridge and a few more pursuing gentlemanly pastimes, Sassoon d e c i d e d t o concentrate on his poetry, which remained mediocre. This was to change with his entry into the army, just a few days before Britain entered the (First World War), and the inspiration the horrors of trench warfare provided him. Hi s wa r po em s w er e t o have an immediacy and vibrancy unmatched by any he had written before. In this study, Sanford Sternlicht examines not only this poetry but Sassoon's other literary endeavours, including the widely acclaimed 'The Complete M em oir s of Geo rg e She rs to n', to create the most comprehensive study of him to date. The first book to profit from the publication of the Sassoon diaries in the 1980s, (it) is an authroitative and well-balanced introduction to the life and wor k o f a fa sci nati ng wr iter . It also provides strong evidence against the popular view that Sassoon was a purely Georgian poet, placing his combat poetry squarely in the modernist tradition. Sassoon' copious post-World War I satirical and relig ious poe try is fully ex pli cated a nd evaluated." Fine/Fine

134 Sutherland, John. THE LONGMAN COMPANION TO VICTORIAN FICTION.
Harlow, Essex Longman 1988 0582490405 / 9780582490406 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
696 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Over 900 biographical entries, more than 600 novels synopsized, and a wealth of background material on the publishers, reviewers and readers of the age make (this) the fullest account of the period's fiction ever attempted. The information is arranged alphabetically; and while concise, the 'Companion' nonetheless, meets the high standards of factual reference demanded by modern scholarship. This does not, however, diminish the human and literary interest which is such a rewarding factor in such guides. A principal use of (the) book will be as a ready source of information on familiar titles and writers. Perhaps its major achievement, though, lies in the way it redraws the map of Victorian fiction. The Victorian novel, and those who wrote, produced, reviewed and bought it are presented to reveal not just a period comprising a tired collection of 'set authors' and reprinted 'classics', but one of richness and variety. While providing an unprecedented quantity of pure fact the 'Companion' is written in an entertaining and lively style." Also includes: Appendix A: Proper Names and Pseudonyms, and Appendix B: Maiden and Married Names. Very light browning to pastedowns under dust jacket flaps. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, light fading to spine color - lettering very legible.

London Unwin Hyman 1989 0044403968 / 9780044403968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
504 pp, 9" H. Dust jacket has 17.95 at bottom corner of front flap. Colour frontispiece in tones of yellowish green and black, b&w maps, drawings, reproductions, runes. "(T)he seventh volume in Christopher Tolkien's 'History of Middle-earth' and the second in his account of the evolution of 'The Lord of the Rings'. (Traces) the great expansion of the tale into new lands and new peoples south and east of the Misty Mountains: the emergence of Lothlorien, of Ents, of the Riders of Rohan, and of Saruman the White in the fortress of Isengard. In brief outlines and pencilled drafts dashed down on scraps of paper are seen the first entry of Galadriel, the earliest ideas of the history of Gondor, the original meeting of Aragorn and Eowyn, its significance destined to wholly transformed. Conceptions of what lay ahead are seen dissolving as the story took its own path, as in the account of the capture of Frodo and his rescue by Sam Gamgee from Minas Morgul, written long before J.R.R. Tolkien actually came to the point in the writing of 'The Lord of the Rings'. A chief feature of the book is a full account of the original Map, with re-drawings of successive phases, which was long the basis and accompani-ment of the emerging geography of Middle-earth. An appendix describes the Runic alphabets as they were at that time, with illustrations of the forms and an analysis of the Runes used in the Book of Mazarbul found beside Balin's tomb in Moria." There is a black remainder mark on bottom edge of the textblock, positioned against the spine, so not as noticeable as in many cases, two tiny dents and one small shallow dent on rear board, very small dent on top edge at corner, tiny bump at top of hinges. Dust jacket has corresponding dents on back panel, tiny dent on rear hinge, minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.
