THE FLIGHT OF THE MEW GULL., Henshaw, Alex.
121 Henshaw, Alex. THE FLIGHT OF THE MEW GULL.
London John Murray 1980 0719537401 / 9780719537400 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
310 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. "(Alex Henshaw) had the luck to grow up in the '20s and '30s during the golden age of flying and thanks to his father's generous encouragement it was not long before he had his own Gipsy Moth. From that moment there was no looking back. The Blue Riband of flying in the British Isles between the two World Wars was the King's Cup: Henshaw set his heart on it, developing a technique of racing which extracted the very maximum from his aircraft: first the Comper Swift and then the DH Leopard Moth. Parallel with his search for speed was an obsession with making accurate landfalls, and he developed this blind-flying talent deliberately in a flying partnership with his father on many carefully planned long-distance survey flights. His exciting apprenticeship in these two skills was crowned by the acquisition of the Percival Mew Gull G-AEXF in 1937. After many initial successes with the machine Henshaw became associated with Jack Cross of Essex Aero Ltd at Gravesend who became primarily responsible for the racing and long distance preparations. First fruits of this partnerships was victory in the King's Cup of 1938 at a speed that was the fastest of any winning aircraft at any time. This was closely followed by an amazing solo flight to Cape Town and back in February 1939 establishing several solo records that still stand today, over forty years later. This feat of navigation and airmanship must surely be one of man's greatest flights - 12,754 miles over desert, sea and jungle in a single-engined light aircraft. Alex Henshaw tells his story in a vivid style that puts you at the heart of all his battles and adventures." Small light bump at top of rear hinge, slight waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of rear hinge and rear flap-fold.

MEMOIRS OF WILHELMINE, MARGRAVINE OF BAIREUTH., Her Royal Highness Princess Christian of Schleswig Holstein, translator & editor. (Frederica Sophie Wilhelmine of Brandenburg-Baireuth.)
123 Her Royal Highness Princess Christian of Schleswig Holstein, translator & editor. (Frederica Sophie Wilhelmine of Brandenburg-Baireuth.) MEMOIRS OF WILHELMINE, MARGRAVINE OF BAIREUTH.
London David Stott 1887 Hard Cover Good- Inscribed by editor.
458 pp + (1) pp publisher's advertising, 9" H. Tissue-covered sepiatone frontispiece. Inscribed on half title page: "For dearest Louisechen / from her devoted Sister / Helena (underlined with a flourish) / July. 1887. (underlined)". Helena Augusta Victoria was Queen Victoria's 5th child and married Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, becoming Princess Christian. The British Royal family were fond of German diminutives and the 'Louisechen' of the inscription could have been her younger sister, Louise Caroline Alberta, or her Prussian sister-in-law, wife of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, who was referred to as 'Louisechen' in family papers. The Duke served as Governor General of Canada in 1911 and 'Duchess of Connaught' has been pencilled above 'Louisechen' at some time. An interesting association copy. Some small splits to paper on inside hinges, a few pages with soft wrinkling at top corner, scattered light foxing marks on preliminary pages and on two rear pages, book is lightly cocked, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, small slight bump at board corners, age/dust darkening to edges of text block - especially to the top, rubbing and soiling to boards.

Edmonton M.G. Hurtig 1971 0888300360 / 9780888300362 First Hurtig Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ George Heriot.
602 pp, 10 1/2" H. Red cloth covered boards, black title block with gilt lettering/decoration on spine. Original publisher's cardboard slipcase with titling on spine and one side. Black, white & cream illustrations (several fold-out) plus colour fold-out map (collated). Title continues: "To which is sub-joined a comparative view of the manners and customs of several of the Indian nations of North and South America." "Heriot went to Quebec in 1792 as a civil servant and became deputy postmaster general of Canada in 1799. Until 1816 he remained in Canada, travelling at least as far west as Niagara Falls, perhaps Detroit, and to some extent in the United States, sketching along the way. His legacy - his water-colors and this book, an unsurpassed intimate history of 'the lakes, the rivers, and cataracts, the villages, farm-houses, and townships of Canada'. Although British reviewers of the day were unimpressed by richly detailed descriptions of a mere colony, the extent and precision of Heriot's account is a virtue one hundred and sixty years later. He wrote at length of each of the major waterways in Upper and Lower Canada which were, as James Talman points out in his introduction, 'of first importance in the life of the people as a means of travel and a source of water power'. And his sketches of buildings, particularly in Quebec, are invaluable since many of those buildings were already falling into ruin when Heriot saw them." Very minor wrinkling at top og spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing. Slipcase has very light edge wear/rubbing, tiny slight puncture on one side, slight bump at top of spine.

130 Holmes, John W. THE SHAPING OF PEACE: CANADA AND THE SEARCH FOR WORLD ORDER, 1943-1957. VOLUME 2.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1982 0802055419 / 9780802055415 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The establishment of the United Nations system at the conclusion of the Second World War was followed by a period of disillusion in the late 40s about the prospects of world order. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 there came a regrouping of forces and revised calculations of what was possible. The first volume of 'The Shaping of Peace' described Canadian attitudes and policies towards international institutions as the Second World War ended. This volume is concerned with the developments in the decade after the war, with the changing Canadian concepts as they were shaped by events and challenges. Although principal attention is paid to the organs of the United Nations, other themes such as the establishment of NATO, the progress of the new Commonwealth, and the changing concepts of the North American relationship are analysed as essential elements in the Canadian search for equilibrium." Minor wrinkling at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, very light browning.

MOUNTAINS AND A MONASTERY., Holmes, Peter.
131 Holmes, Peter. MOUNTAINS AND A MONASTERY.
Geoffrey Bles, London, 1958, first edition.
191 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, 2 fold-out maps. "Spiti is a mountainous desert province, on the borders of Tibet, inhabited by a backward hill-folk whose way of life has not changed in a thousand years. It was there, in the village of Ranrik, that Peter Holmes, his wife Judy and their party met Shiring Dawa, the twelve-year-old boy who by his determination had escaped the fate of younger sons in Spiti - to be shut up in the Buddhist monastery at t h e a g e of eight and to remain there for the rest of their lives. The author was struck with Shiring's exceptional intelligence and his ability to grasp facts which were beyond the imagination of most of the villagers, and through him was able to l e ar n a g reat deal about village life and the influence exerted by the monastery. Spiti, however, was only one stage on their journey, and Peter Holmes goes on to describe some hair-raising adventures in the Himalayas. They succeeded in sc ali ng se ver al f or midable mountains not before attempted and Peter Holmes' photographic record of the expedition has provided many unusual illustrations for this delightful book about the Himalayas and the people who live in them." Minor wrink ling at to p/bo tto m o f s pine, one very small corner bump, tiny soiling mark on bottom edge of rear board, very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has several small chips and tears, two tiny dints on spine, light edge wear, are as of lig ht b rowni ng - now in a mylar sleeve. Very Good/Good

352 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(O)ffers a very different kind of tour to the armchair traveler. Wander through the haunted castles and cottages of Europe with Hans Holzer, the world's most famous psychic investigator, and explore a full range of psychic phenomena from the spirits of the British Isles to the haunts of Imperial Vienna. In England, Anne Boleyn's legendary ghost walks headless within the Tower of London; a procession of transparent monks appears in the Cathedral of Winchester, where no monks have trod since the sixteenth century; and Bloody Queen Mary still visits the four-poster bed where she slept in the dark days of 1553. At Kilkea Castle in Kildare, it is said that the Wizard Earl and his companions ride at night and will return someday from the beyond to 'put things right in Ireland'. Room No. 2 in the Hotel de l'Europe in Avignon holds a shocking surprise for the unwary guest; and in Paris, No. 3 avenue Montaigne offers a special concert of ghostly piano music from a spectral grand. Ghost occur wherever great tragedy has left an unfortunate person stranded between the next world and this one, someone who has not yet been freed from their emotional turmoil. The true accounts presented in this book are based on Dr. Holzer's personal investigations." One page leaf with two very small scollops at fore-edge. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor browning to inside edges.

224 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The flight of the German airplane 'Bremen' from Europe to North America in 1928 was one of the milestones of aviation history. No one had flown the Atlantic in that direction and the risks were high - seven people had died in the attempt. When two Germans and an Irishman left Ireland in the 'Bremen' for New York, there were predictions of a similar fate, and when nothing was heard after 40 hours, the newspapers began preparing obituaries for the gallant crew. Suddenly a message was relayed from a remote Canadian radio station: the aircraft had force-landed on an ice-bound island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence - and the race was on to reach the stranded flyers. The 'Bremen' story is an exciting drama of courage, humour and tragedy. All sorts of people found themselves drawn to the event, from the lighthouse keeper and his family, who watched in amazement as the aircraft landed almost at their front door, to presidents and prime ministers. There were the bush pilots who were first to reach the flyers, the mechanics who tried to repair the 'Bremen', ruthless reporters competing for a scoop, and Lindbergh making a mercy flight in an attempt to save the life of pilot Floyd Bennett. Small wonder an enthusiastic journalist of those aviation-mad day called the 'Bremen' episode, 'the greatest news story of all time'." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. SOUTH OF LISBON: WINTER TRAVELS IN SOUTHERN PORTUGAL., Huggett, Frank E.
137 Huggett, Frank E. SOUTH OF LISBON: WINTER TRAVELS IN SOUTHERN PORTUGAL.
Victor Gollancz, London, 1960, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "Frank Hugget went to Portugal to see, to understand, and to interpret. He went first to the capital, Lisbon, and then journeyed down through the country to its most southerly province, Algarve....For several months he settled in the small town of Albufeira, and here, living with and getting to know the inhabitants, he explored and sought to isolate the national characteristics of the Portuguese....(From the beginning he became) conscious of the very endearing, if sometimes maddening, qualities of the Portuguese people - their politeness and charm, and a great kindness that comes before their own comfort, customs and conventions....He sees Portugal (in 1960) as a de sperately backward and impoverished land....He sees a society in which, as a corollary to poverty and caste, there is a fearful rigidity in the relationship between men and women. The frustrated lover, he says, might be the symbol of the P o r t u g u e s e - and since the passion of men is frustrated and can find its outlet only in marriage (which is manoeuvred and controlled by the matriarch and therefore conditioned by an older generation), the relationship between the sexes is ov er -i de al is ed , an d finally disappoints, sending the man back to his dreams and imprisoning the woman in the home. It is, he suggests, this frustrated idealism which lies at the root of that most national emotion, 'saudade', and inspires th e ' fad os' of Li sbo n a nd Co im bra....recalling the era of Portugal's greatness - when her seamen voyaged round the Cape (not then of 'good hope'), on to the far Indies and around the world, pioneering into the unknown with fantastic courage - Mr . Hu gget t fi nds the same gr eatn ess of spirit very much alive today: in, for instance, that unique complex of Portuguese feelings and attitudes known as 'loucura', which is 'more than vanity, more than bravery, more than recklessness, mor e tha n mad ness, alth ough it conta ins all t hese elements. It is a needlessly mad courage which tempts fate to destroy and introduces into some simple action a complicated danger'. Mr. Huggett analyses, in detail and with penetration, the na ture o f the Salaza r dict ators hip. ...the pro spect of an y revolutionary change of regime remains, in (the author's) opinion, remote. In addition to its value as a portrait of a little-known country and a really thoughful interpretation of its people , the book is also a very vivid and pe rsuas ive pi ece of writing: there are splendid descriptions of town and country, shore and sea." Very light browning on free endpapers, small foxing mark on front endpapers, small bookstore label on front paste down, ti ny soili ng mar k on c ontents page, light b rowning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has light foxing marks on inside surface, very light edge wear, two tiny closed tears with creases - archivally taped, light rubbing a nd soilin g on re ar panel, faint fo xing ma rks on panels - mainl y rear p anel. OUT OF SEASON: A TRAVELLER'S TALE OF A WINTER JOURNEY., Hughes, Spike.
138 Hughes, Spike. OUT OF SEASON: A TRAVELLER'S TALE OF A WINTER JOURNEY.
London Robert Hale 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
156 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "The term 'out of season' is purely relative, of course. The winter's journey which took Spike Hughes and his wife to Sicily and back, by way of Germany and Austria, was made at a time of year which, so far from being out of season, was at the very height of the seaons for their purpose: the study of famous Italian opera houses in full operatic cry, as it were. In the course of a journey of some 4,000 miles (they) found many things to delight them, not the least important being an atmosphere of leisure and an opportunity to stand and stare which can be achieved only out of season. So it was that by visiting in winter places which normally thrive as summer resorts he found time to learn many things which would 'come in useful' to anybody willing to profit from his experiences and likely to spend holidays in those places at a more conventional time of year. In the end, the difference between visiting Italy in winter was the difference between being fussed over and spoiled as a guest and being allowed to live one's own life without having to distinguish one day from another. And that, Spike Hughes believes, is the greatest luxury any form of travel can take." Scattered foxing marks on edges of textblock, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light browning on endpapers. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny tears, light rubbing, light soiling on rear panel, foxing on inside surface.

139 Hunter, Martin. STILL HUNTING: A MEMOIR.
Toronto ECW Press 2013 1770411267 / 9781770411265 First Edition Soft Cover Fine Richard Williams, cover art. Inscribed By Author
260 pp, 8 3/4" H. Inscribed on title page: "To L___ / Martin June 18, 2013". "Picking up where 'Young Hunting' left off, Martin Hunter's second memoir explores Toronto in the 1960s as he marries his high school sweetheart, goes to work for the family paper company, fathers three children, and settles into a bourgeois lifestyle. But things don't stay settled for long. His flamboyant brother-in-law moves in with his gay lover, and peace, love, and experimentation arrive in Rosedale with wild parties. Hunter writes a play about Toronto's changing social dynamic that's considered racy but wins an award. The University of Toronto offers him a position as playwright-in-residence, and there he consorts with the likes of Robertson Davies and Marshall McLuhan. 'Still Hunting' takes readers on Hunter's adventures in Europe and the Middle East, reveals his stories of working in the theatre, and shares tales of his spirited friends, colleagues, and loved ones. From Greek shipping tycoons to up-and-coming actors to the Maharaja of Jaipur and filmmaker James Ivory, this memoir of a life well lived is full of unforgettable characters - chief among them Martin Hunter."
