123 Halliday, Hugh A. MURDER AMONG GENTLEMEN: A HISTORY OF DUELLING IN CANADA.
Toronto Robin Brass 1999 1896941095 / 9781896941097 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
198 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. "The formal duel, with its elaborate ritual and code of conduct, was once considered the 'honourable' way for self-styled gentlemen to settle disputes involving character and integrity. The law made no special provisions for duelling - the winner in a fatal contest was a murderer. But the prevailling sentiment that a duel was 'fair', and the fact that upper-crust combatants in the thinly populated 19th-century Canada were well-connected with the judiciary, meant that duellists usually escaped with little or no punishment. What is surprising is that so many came from the ranks of those whose job it was to uphold the law - lawyers, judges and politicians, including at least two future Fathers of Confederation and several chief justices. Hugh Halliday not only describes some of the most interesting duels that took place in Canada but looks at duelling in light of our human tendency to ritualize conflicts with codes of acceptable and unacceptable practice. He also examines the steps that often led to a duel, including the public 'posting' of allegations, or insults, that was frequently a part of the process." Appendix: The Irish Duelling Code. Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

130 Holmes, John W. THE SHAPING OF PEACE: CANADA AND THE SEARCH FOR WORLD ORDER, 1943-1957. VOLUME 2.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1982 0802055419 / 9780802055415 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The establishment of the United Nations system at the conclusion of the Second World War was followed by a period of disillusion in the late 40s about the prospects of world order. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 there came a regrouping of forces and revised calculations of what was possible. The first volume of 'The Shaping of Peace' described Canadian attitudes and policies towards international institutions as the Second World War ended. This volume is concerned with the developments in the decade after the war, with the changing Canadian concepts as they were shaped by events and challenges. Although principal attention is paid to the organs of the United Nations, other themes such as the establishment of NATO, the progress of the new Commonwealth, and the changing concepts of the North American relationship are analysed as essential elements in the Canadian search for equilibrium." Minor wrinkling at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, very light browning.

Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
312 pp, 9 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "Shocking, tragic, almost unbelievable, is this account of the strange sect and its fanatic leaders who have defied the laws of Canada for over fifty years. (Uses) the records of the RCMP, the courts, and the government, (and) also the statements of the Doukhobors themselves to complete this history of the sect from its origin in Russia to the present day. It is a story of fanatical terrorism let loose in the name of religious freedom; of a Mafia-like organization growing more sophisticated in its criminal activities with each passing year - an organization which has killed twenty-three Canadians, destroyed almost twenty million dollars' worth of property, and warped the lives of successive generations of Doukhobor children." Copp, Clark 1972 Soft Cover Good+
728 pp, 8 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "How did people live through the Depression of the 1930s? (T)he Depression irrevocably altered the attitudes of those who endured it, and consequently has subtly shaped the life styles of their children. This fascinating collection contains accounts from various classes - farmers, fishermen, industrial and extractive workers, white collar workers, members of the professions, independent proprietors, rentiers, managers - and those who belonged only to the vast mass of unemployed. Personal histories are nicely balanced by comments from academic writers, from journalists, social workers, policemen, the clergy, and from politicians and others who offered a bewildering selection of 'cures'. The final section of the book presents the reminiscences of several well-known Canadians." Interior - light toning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. AMPLE MANSIONS: THE VICEREGAL RESIDENCES OF THE CANADIAN PROVINCES., Hubbard, R.H. Foreword by Her Excellency, Jeanne Sauve.
134 Hubbard, R.H. Foreword by Her Excellency, Jeanne Sauve. AMPLE MANSIONS: THE VICEREGAL RESIDENCES OF THE CANADIAN PROVINCES.
Ottawa University of Ottawa Pres 1989 0776602772 / 9780776602776 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
237 pp, oblong (9 1/4" H x 12 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, repro-ductions. "The viceregal residences of the Canadian provinces mirror the idiosyncrasies of their inhabitants, and the tastes and talents of the architects, builders, gardeners, furniture makers and decorators who created them. In 'Ample Mansions' you will see the finest - and sometimes the worst - of Canadian style. There's no shortage of pomp in our viceregal history, but Dr. Hubbard's scholarly and sprightly text goes behind the scenes too, where there's plenty of room for rot and mildew, plugged drains and erratic staff. There are ample mansions crumbling from neglect, ample mansions consumed in conflagrations, ample mansions falling victim to political spats - and ample mansions rising in new splendour." Fine book. Dust jacket has three small areas of minor rubbing on rear panel.

137 Jack, Donald. Forewords by Pierre Berton and Martin M. Hoffman, M.D. ROGUES, REBELS, AND GENIUSES: THE STORY OF CANADIAN MEDICINE.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1981 0385155751 / 9780385155755 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
662 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(A) lively and absorbing account of more than 400 years of medicine in Canada, from the Indian shamans to the present day. Canadian doctors have made an enormous contribution to world medicine - their achievements range from the discovery of insulin to the development of the cobalt bomb. And the famouse names are here: Grenfell, Archibald, Osler, Bethune, Penfield, Selye, Banting. But, as Pierre Berton points out in his foreword, (this) is 'more than a history of Canadian medicine: in a curious way it is also a history of the Canadian nation. In his monumental examination of the place of doctors in our history, Donald Jack makes it clear that since Cartier's day medical men have been bound up in the development of the country - not only as practitioners but also as politicians, explorers, gadflies, soldiers, community leaders.' The author brings to his subject not only a depth of research but a novelist's eye for the dramatic, the humorous, and the eccentric. The medical men and women who appear in these pages, 'in their furs and shirtsleeves, bloodstained frock coats and sterilzed gowns, tell an intensely personal story of triumphant response to challenge; triumphant not least because their lives affirm the supreme value of the individual ego'." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing, slight browning to top/bottom edges.

140 Jameson, Sheilagh S. With Nola B. Erickson. CHAUTAUQUA IN CANADA.
Calgary, Alberta Glenbow-Alberta Institute 1979 0919224075 / 9780919224070 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
161 pp, 9 3/8" H x 10 3/16" D. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Chautauqua brought education, inspiration, and entertainment to the people of Canada. They flocked to the brown tents - symbols of the movement - to hear noted lecturers, listen to good music, and see live theatre. To many in small towns across the prairies and in isolated areas it brought their only opportunity for a cultural experience; it brightened their lives by bringing a touch of drama, a glimpse of far away places and a sense of magic, and thus filled an important need in their lives. This book traces the history of its phenomenon in Canada. It touches on its beginnings in the United States and on the lives of its Canadian founders, John M. and Nola B. Erickson. The work of the Ericksons in developing Chautauqua, the activities of the many young people who assisted in operating the circuits, and the experiences of the talent who appeared on the platforms, are all a part of the story." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few tiny edge tears archivally taped.
