THE WRETCHED OF CANADA: LETTERS TO R.B. BENNETT 1930-1935., Grayson, L.M. And Bliss, Michael, editors.
122 Grayson, L.M. And Bliss, Michael, editors. THE WRETCHED OF CANADA: LETTERS TO R.B. BENNETT 1930-1935.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1971 0802018254 / 9780802018250 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
199 pp, 8 3/4" H. "These are the voices of the people who suffered most in the Great Depression of the 1930s - the prairie farmers, the unemployed workers, the old, the sick, and the very young. They lived in shacks, patched their clothes, and went to bed hungry. Their lives were bleak and still. Even the ordinary escape-hatches of the radio, the newspaper, and liquor were closed for many of them. Theirs was life at the bottom, a single-minded struggle for survival, monontonous and dreary. The editors have carefully culled 168 of the most interesting letters of the many thousands Prime Minister Bennett received during his term of office. The collection is unique in that it allows the poor to speak for themselves, bypassing the middle-class spokesmen - union leaders, social workers, radical politicians - who too often sketched the poor in their own image. These letters strip away the tawdry glamour and stupid nostalgia that somehow clouds the 1930s retrospect. They reveal how bad the thirties were for some people in Canada: worse perhaps than most of the history texts and even the survivors remember. In a vivid and very personal way this collection gives both those who lived throught the depression and those who know only the prosperity of the last few decades an inisght into the human casualties of economic upheaval." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor soiling/rubbing on rear panel, a few tiny edge chips/tears, very slight darkening to spine.

STANDING NAKED IN THE WINGS: ANECDOTES FROM CANADIAN ACTORS., Green, Lynda Mason and Moore, Tedde, compilers/editors.
123 Green, Lynda Mason and Moore, Tedde, compilers/editors. STANDING NAKED IN THE WINGS: ANECDOTES FROM CANADIAN ACTORS.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1997 0195411951 / 9780195411959 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
362 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "(G)limpses the world of actors as experienced by Canadian performers. In their own words, more than two hundred actors share shocking, funny, terrifying, sometimes poignant stories of adventures, mishaps, gaffes, disasters, and moments of joy they have known in the course of their working lives on and off stage. The collection of over 450 stories begins with tales of 'The Audition' and early performing experiences of some familiers faces, such as Wayne and Schuster, William Shatner, Robert Goulet, and Martin Short. It chronicles life on tour from Russia to the Ozarks to above the Arctic circle. It elucidates the trials of props, sets, and wardrobe that refuse to function as intended, the agonies of surviving the unexpected, whether it be a four-legged cast member going into labour, an actor who has somehow forgotten an entrance, a sudden on-stage bout with very real food poisoning, or the often hilarious contributions from members of the audience." Tiny bumps to bottom of spine, light waviness on spine. Minor edge wrinkling on dust jacket.

THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS., Guillet, Edwin C.
128 Guillet, Edwin C. THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1968 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
246 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps, drawings. "From portage trails snaking their way through the wilderness to superhighways carrying the raw materials and produce of an industrial nation, Canada's roads have had a romantic but long-neglected history. The problems which Canada has faced in seeking to connect two oceans by road would have been formidable even in a land more densely populated. Early builders found their way blocked by forest and swamp, rivers, rocks, vast areas of grassland, mountains, and muskeg. Their gradual success is recounted from the woodland trail cleared by Champlain in Acadia on through the early construction by corvee in New France; the Temiscouta Trail between the Atlantic Provinces and the Canadas; the infamous corduroy roads and bridges which jolted passengers unmercifully and lamed their horses; the plank roads, Canada's first contribution to road-building science; the cart tracks cut into the virgin prairies by Metis buffalo hunters; the Cariboo Road, build through sheer canyons and over mountain passes to the gold fields fo the Upper Fraser; and the vehicles which travelled these routes - the wonderul assortment of sleighs, caleches, buckboards, Red River carts, wagons, and stage-coaches of the nineteenth century. Then came the automobile, and with it an unprecedented personal mobility. Today Canada's roads are one of her principal resources. The Trans-Canada Highway, a dream for most of a century, has forged a new tie of asphalt and concrete, unifying the country." Dust jacket has very light edge wear, tiny dent on front hinge.

MURDER AMONG GENTLEMEN: A HISTORY OF DUELLING IN CANADA., Halliday, Hugh A.
131 Halliday, Hugh A. MURDER AMONG GENTLEMEN: A HISTORY OF DUELLING IN CANADA.
Toronto Robin Brass 1999 1896941095 / 9781896941097 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
198 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. "The formal duel, with its elaborate ritual and code of conduct, was once considered the 'honourable' way for self-styled gentlemen to settle disputes involving character and integrity. The law made no special provisions for duelling - the winner in a fatal contest was a murderer. But the prevailling sentiment that a duel was 'fair', and the fact that upper-crust combatants in the thinly populated 19th-century Canada were well-connected with the judiciary, meant that duellists usually escaped with little or no punishment. What is surprising is that so many came from the ranks of those whose job it was to uphold the law - lawyers, judges and politicians, including at least two future Fathers of Confederation and several chief justices. Hugh Halliday not only describes some of the most interesting duels that took place in Canada but looks at duelling in light of our human tendency to ritualize conflicts with codes of acceptable and unacceptable practice. He also examines the steps that often led to a duel, including the public 'posting' of allegations, or insults, that was frequently a part of the process." Appendix: The Irish Duelling Code. Bilingual French/English Introduction / Location of Documents / List of Persons / Captions to Illustrations / Indexes. Main text English only. This volume "deals with the evolution of Canadian policy during the middle years of the war, from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, until the end of 1943. During those years, attention shifted from working out the bases of Canada's participation, as 'a belligerent second only to Britain as a Commonwealth military power', to an attempt to define this country's place in an Allied war effort dominated by much larger nations. That effort was important not only because Canadians were concerned about the conduct of the war itself but also because precedents were being established which would profoundly affect their interests once peace returned. It was a time of testing Canada's sovereignty and for determining the recognition which the country might expect for its contribution to victory." Chapter headings: Conduct of External Relations; Conduct of War; Post-War Planning; United Nations Organizations and Conferences; Other International Organizations and Conferences; Commonwealth Relations; Relations with the United States; Relations with France; Bilateral Relations; Appendices. 139 Holmes, John W. THE SHAPING OF PEACE: CANADA AND THE SEARCH FOR WORLD ORDER, 1943-1957. VOLUME 2.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1982 0802055419 / 9780802055415 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The establishment of the United Nations system at the conclusion of the Second World War was followed by a period of disillusion in the late 40s about the prospects of world order. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 there came a regrouping of forces and revised calculations of what was possible. The first volume of 'The Shaping of Peace' described Canadian attitudes and policies towards international institutions as the Second World War ended. This volume is concerned with the developments in the decade after the war, with the changing Canadian concepts as they were shaped by events and challenges. Although principal attention is paid to the organs of the United Nations, other themes such as the establishment of NATO, the progress of the new Commonwealth, and the changing concepts of the North American relationship are analysed as essential elements in the Canadian search for equilibrium." Minor wrinkling at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, very light browning.

140 Holt, Simma. TERROR IN THE NAME OF GOD: THE STORY OF THE SONS OF FREEDOM DOUKHOBORS.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
312 pp, 9 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "Shocking, tragic, almost unbelievable, is this account of the strange sect and its fanatic leaders who have defied the laws of Canada for over fifty years. (Uses) the records of the RCMP, the courts, and the government, (and) also the statements of the Doukhobors themselves to complete this history of the sect from its origin in Russia to the present day. It is a story of fanatical terrorism let loose in the name of religious freedom; of a Mafia-like organization growing more sophisticated in its criminal activities with each passing year - an organization which has killed twenty-three Canadians, destroyed almost twenty million dollars' worth of property, and warped the lives of successive generations of Doukhobor children." Very light browning to edges of text block, very small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds; toning to flap-folds, hinges and edges; several very small edge tears and chips; light rubbing; a few tiny scuffs on spine; crease down rear flap; now protected in a mylar sleeve.
