GHOSTS OF OLD EUROPE., Holzer, Hans.
101 Holzer, Hans. GHOSTS OF OLD EUROPE.
New York Dorset 1992 0880297182 / 9780880297189 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
352 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(O)ffers a very different kind of tour to the armchair traveler. Wander through the haunted castles and cottages of Europe with Hans Holzer, the world's most famous psychic investigator, and explore a full range of psychic phenomena from the spirits of the British Isles to the haunts of Imperial Vienna. In England, Anne Boleyn's legendary ghost walks headless within the Tower of London; a procession of transparent monks appears in the Cathedral of Winchester, where no monks have trod since the sixteenth century; and Bloody Queen Mary still visits the four-poster bed where she slept in the dark days of 1553. At Kilkea Castle in Kildare, it is said that the Wizard Earl and his companions ride at night and will return someday from the beyond to 'put things right in Ireland'. Room No. 2 in the Hotel de l'Europe in Avignon holds a shocking surprise for the unwary guest; and in Paris, No. 3 avenue Montaigne offers a special concert of ghostly piano music from a spectral grand. Ghost occur wherever great tragedy has left an unfortunate person stranded between the next world and this one, someone who has not yet been freed from their emotional turmoil. The true accounts presented in this book are based on Dr. Holzer's personal investigations." One page leaf with two very small scollops at fore-edge. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor browning to inside edges.

781 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w map. "Under the ruthless leadership of Henbane of Whern, the grikes have taken over moledom and soon, under Lucerne, her son by Tryfan, their ascendancy is to be consol-idated and the last followers of the Stone rooted out and killed. Duncton Wood has been sealed off and made a colony for aging and diseased mole outcasts whose sterile feuding and self-hatred the grikes believe will destroy forever the legendary system's spiritual power. Yet it is here, in the shadow of hopelessness and death, that the Stone Mole has been born. His name is Beechen, and the aging Tryfan is entrusted with preparing him for his great task of showing all moles how the Stone's Silence may finally be known. As young Beechen sets forth from Duncton Wood, he finds that all the dark forces of the evil Word have been unleashed against him - and that he will need the courage and faith of other moles, young and old - the much-loved Mayweed, intelligent Sleekit, strong Alder, nervous Bailey and grubby Holm - if hope is to survive." Toronto HarperCollins 1996 0002245493 / 9780002245494 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
148 pp, 8 5/8" H. "Britain has just declared war on Germany and (Maureen's) father has been sent to the Front, where casualties are heavy. Her mother is trooping off eagerly - too eagerly, (she) thinks - to London 'to help with the war effort'. And Maureen is being shipped off to the stuffy-sounding Logan Academy for Young Ladies, a remote but supposedly safe boarding school in the Scottish Highlands. The girls at the school are just as Maureen expects: cold and cliquish, completely cowed by their cruel ringleader, Kathleen. But there's also something weird about these girls, something sinister. Why do they slip away in the middle of the night, one by one, to visit the woods surrounding the school? What's their secret society, called the Seven Magpies, all about - and why does it make them seem so nervous? It isn't until Maureen herself falls under the spell of a strange stone, a stone that compels her to leave it offerings of food, that she begins to understand what's making her schoolmates seem so strange. And then she discovers what the real danger is - - . A realistic yet magical story of what happens when a group of teenagers tampers with the ancient power of the Celts." Both book and dust jacket are clean and bright.

163 pp, small 4to (10 15/16" H). Profusely illustrated with photographs, reproductions. " 'The Wipers Times' was the 'Private Eye' of the Ypres Salient during World War One. Edited, while under bombardment, by a battalion commander in the Sherwood Foresters, written by soldiers actually in the trenches and distributed by ration-wagon and ammunition-mule, the paper bears vivid witness to the shocking realities of trench warfare. Yet for all the occasional horror of its content 'The Wipers Times' was a gentle, humour-filled and satirical paper which, once its codes are cracked and its riddles solved, tells an interested reader much about the characters and personalities of the men in the British Army of the First World War. Interpretation of regular features such as the bogus music-hall advertisements that feature in every issue, columns like 'Answers to our Many Correspondents' and 'Things We Want to Know' and careful study of some of the remarkable poetry published in the paper explain to readers what it was like to be there. The mud, the gas, the shells; the fear, the courage, the humour and the bitterness; much is revealed about these and many other things in this remarkable book that unravels the eighty-year-old Riddles of Wipers." 114 Judd, Denis. THE ROYAL VICTORIANS: A PICTORIAL BIOGRAPHY.
St. Martin's, New York, 1975.
207 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "(T)ells the public and private story of an unusual 'rake's progress'. For the first sixty years of his life Edward had fought against respectability and - in so doing - confirmed the low opinion of him held by his mother, Queen Victoria. Yet, by the time of his death in 1910 only nine years after succeeding to the throne, he had become the symbol of security to a society which was uncertain and deeply divided within itself. Kept i n ignorance of State affairs by his mother, Edward spent his life as Prince of Wales pursuing pleasure and freely indulging his passions for the chase. Horses, yachts, cars and spas were among his favorite pastimes, while scandalous liaisons with ' professional beauties' nearly proved his undoing. Succinctly and entertainingly, with the aid of 250 photographs, prints and drawings, (the author) describes the life and reign of one of England's most flamboyant kings. In private life Edward VI I was a devoted husband to Alexandra and an excellent father to their children (the future George V called him 'my best friend and the best of fathers'), and once he was in office his conviviality and natural gift for diplomacy proved invaluable in en ding Britain's policy of 'splendid isolation'. It was only fitting that he should give his name to an era." Stein and Day, New York, 1974, first edition.
226 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0812816250 "....sheds new light on the origins of the Cold War. (Kaiser) brings into the debate factors that others have ignored, most notably the influence on foreign policy of domes tic political and economic conditions in 1946 and 1947 in the United States and Great Britain. 'The Truman Doctrine - the beginning of the Cold War - was closely tied to the events of its time, events largely forgotten now, but crucially i m p o r t a n t then', writes Kaiser. 'Who recalls the fuel crisis of February, 1947, when Britain appeared for a moment on the verge of utter collapse? Yet without the crisis, there would have been no Truman Doctrine and no Marshall Plan in 1947 . W ho r ec al ls t h e strength of the anti-British feeling in the American Congress after the War? Yet it was that emotion, and President Truman's fear of its influence, that was largely responsible for the strident tone of the Truman Doctrine s pee ch. ' (Th is boo k) is more than a reassessment. It is based in part on the author's personal interviews with world leaders who played important parts in the events discussed - Dean Acheson, Clark Clifford, Averell Harriman, Clement Atlee, and Ric hard H .S. Cro ssma n, amo ng others." SIDEWAYS ON A SCOOTER: LIFE AND LOVE IN INDIA., Kennedy, Miranda.
116 Kennedy, Miranda. SIDEWAYS ON A SCOOTER: LIFE AND LOVE IN INDIA.
New York Random House 2011 1400067863 / 9781400067862 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
342 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "When twentysomething reporter Miranda Kennedy leaves her job in New York City and travels to India with no employment prospects, she longs to immerse herself in the turmoil and excitement of a rapidly developing country. What she quickly learns in Delhi about renting an apartment as a single woman - it's next to impossible - and the proper way for a woman in India to ride scooters - perched sideways - are early signs that life here is less Westernized than she'd counted on. Living in Delhi for more than five years, and finding a city pulsing with possiblity and hope, Kennedy experiences friendships, love affairs, and losses that open a window onto the opaque world of Indian politics and culture - and alter her own attitudes about everything from food and clothes to marriage and family. Along the way, she is drawn into the lives of several Indian women, including her charismatic friend Geeta, a self-described 'modern girl' who attempts to squeeze herself into the traditional role of wife and mother; Radha, a proud Brahmin widow who denies herself simple pleasures in order to live by high-caste Hindu principles; and Parvati, who defiantly chain-smokes and drinks whiskey, yet feels compelled to keep her boyfriend a secret from her family. In her effort to understand the hopes and dreams that motivate her new friends, Kennedy peels back India's globalized image as a land of call centers and fast-food chains and finds an ancient place where, in many ways, women's lives have scarcely changed for centuries. Incisive, witty, and written with a keen eye for the lush vibrancy of the country that Kennedy comes to love, (this) is both a remarkable memoir and a cultural revelation." REMEMBER WITH ADVANTAGES: A HISTORY OF THE TENTH, ELEVENTH AND ROYAL HUSSARS, 1945-1992., Keown-Boyd, Henry.
117 Keown-Boyd, Henry. REMEMBER WITH ADVANTAGES: A HISTORY OF THE TENTH, ELEVENTH AND ROYAL HUSSARS, 1945-1992.
Leo Cooper, London, (1994), first edition.
296 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps, color plates. "The 10th Royal Hussars (PWO) and the 11th Hussars (PAO) were both raised in 1715 as regiments of Light Dragoons to deal with troubles north of the Scottish border. Both went on to win huge acclaim until, and indeed after, their amalgamation in 1969 as The Royal Hussars (PWO). Now they have had to face up to yet another amalgamation to form with the 14th/20th Hussars, The King's Royal Hussars. This book, written by a former officer of the 11th Hussars (PAO), traces the history of the two regiments from 1945 until the first amalgamation and then details the sadly short-lived history of The Royal Hussars (PWO) up to the time of the second amalgamation in 1992. Depressing as all that may sound, Henry Keown-Boyd shows that, in spite of all, the regimental spirit, the traditional loyalties, the time-honoured customs and the determination to succeed, survive and flourish. Both regiments have had numerous periods of active service since the Second World War and in this book descriptions of duties in Malaya, Arabia and Northern Ireland, among others, are much enhanced by recollections of those who took part . All of the four original regiments now brought together have their roots deeply planted in the history of the British Army and none are likely to dispute the fact that the new King's Royal Hussars will add further laurels to the wreath. Certainly, this is a most worthy tribute to one half of the newly formed regiment." Very faint cigarette odor, bump to top of rear hinge/spine. Dust jacket has light rubbing, creasing at top of spine. VG/VG

118 Kersh, Gerald. A LONG COOL DAY IN HELL.
Heinemann, London, 1965, first edition.
163 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Lily Star Clarke is a veritable Little Snowdrop, as innocently sweet as can be. Yet it was she who ran down Louie Cagliaro and broke the story that killed him. And she it is who now sets out to crack the mystery of the reluctant millionaire, E. Vere Reeve. For years this enigmatic figure has lived as a recluse, protected from the Press and public by the most efficient security systems human ingenuity can devise. Nobody knows the secret of his millions; nobody knows anything about his personality or habits. Few have even seen him. Yet Lily Star Clarke has a limpid candour which tempts people to confide in her, and, armed with only this and her own transparent beauty, she takes up the millionaire's fantastic trail. This characteristic and nightmarish Kershian fable has all the snap and tang of his sardonic wit and brilliant invention." 119 Kimber, Stephen. LOYALISTS AND LAYABOUTS. THE RAPID RISE AND FASTER FALL OF SHELBURNE, NOVA SCOTIA: 1783-1792.
Doubleday Canada 2008 038566172X / 9780385661720 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
335 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The few hundred Loyalists who gathered at Roubalet's Tavern in New York one night in 1782 shared a nightmare of the past and a dream for the future. In the aftermath of the American Revolution, they found themselves abandoned by the king to whom they had promised their loyalty, and unwelcome in the land that had so recently been theirs. On the rocky shores of Roseway Bay on the south coast of Nova Scotia, beside one of the best harbours in the world, they would found a new and improved New York City. It would be cosmopolitan, but more refined, more royal, more loyal and certainly more exclusive than the place they were leaving forever. At first, all seemed to go according to plan. Shelburne, as it was called, quickly became the fourth-largest city in North America. At the time, Nova Scotia Governor John Parr grandly decribed it as 'the most considerable, most flourishing and most expeditious (city) ever -- built in so short a time --'. Within the decade, however, the Loyalists' dream city was well on its way to becoming a ghost town. What went wrong? This extraordinary and yet little-told episode from our nation's past is brought to exciting life. Combining painstaking research and a novelstic flair for narrative, (Kimber) charts Shelburne's 'rapid rise and faster fall' through the intertwined experiences of an eclectic collection of its early settlers, from aristocrats to freed slaves, colonial officers to local entrepreneurs." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny edge bumps to boards. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

In December 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated the throne to marry ' the woman I love,' Wallis Warfield Simpson, a twice-divorced American who quickly became one of the twentieth century's most famous personalities, a figure of intrigue and mystery, both admired and reviled. Wrongly blamed for the abdication crisis, Wallis suffered hostility from the Royal Family and much of the world . Yet interest in her story has remained constant, resulting in a small library of biographies that convey a thinly veiled animosity toward their subject. The truth, however, is infinitely more fascinating than the shallow, pathetic portrait t h a t has often been painted. Using previously untapped sources, (the author) presents a complete and, for the first time, sympathetic portrait of the Duchess that sifts the decades of rumor and accusation to reveal the woman behind the legend. F ro m he r birth in Pennsylvania during the Gilded Age to her death in Paris in 1986, King takes the reader through a world of privilege, palaces, high society, and love with the accompaniment of hatreds, feuds, conspiracies, and lies. The cast of cha ra cte rs is vast: politicians and presidents, dictators and socialites. Twenty-four pages of (b&w) photographs reveal the life of the Duchess in all its incomparable glamour and romance." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership mar ks. Ex ter ior - three light creases down a concave spine. Very Good
