101 Miquelon, Dale. DUGARD OF ROUEN: FRENCH TRADE TO CANADA AND THE WEST INDIES, 1729-1770.
Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1978 0773502998 / 9780773502994 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
282 pp, 9 1/4" H. Tables, map. "From the letters and fragmentary accounts of Robert Dugard of Rouen, Professor Miquelon has brought to life the history of an eighteenth-century trading company. Robert Dugard and his associates were men who came of age at the right moment to capitalize on the political and financial stability of France during the thirty years after Utrecht, and on the widening opportunities of colonial trade. Their Societe du Canada was founded in 1729 to handle the Quebec trade, but soon they were also testing the sugar island trade. By 1742 their business with the West Indies was more profitable than their Canadian trade. But catastrophe trod upon the heels of success: between 1744 and 1748 most of their fleet was lost to shipwreck and war. Of the three remaining ships one was broken up, another relegated to the fishery, and the third given over to sugar hauling. At Quebec, Dugard's factors, Havy and Lefebvre, had remained and prospered in the fur trade, Labrador sealing, and the trade with France. Professor Miquelon describes their activities, which continued until their business was completely destroyed by the Conquest of Canada." Bump to top of spine, three corners have tiny or small bump. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

104 Nish, Cameron; Waite, P.B.; Brown, R.C.; Prang, M.E., editors. CANADIAN HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS SERIES - 3 VOLUME SET. VOLUME I. THE FRENCH REGIME. VOLUME II. PRE-CONFEDERATION. VOLUME III. CONFEDERATION TO 1949.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1965 Very Good Good
Three volume set - volumes I & III are hard covers in dust jackets, volume II is soft cover. Volume I: The French Regime - 176 pp, hard cover in dust jacket, 9" H - "(C)ontains a fascinating collection of first-hand accounts by individuals involved in the founding and settling of Canada. Through their own words these men chronicle their ambitions, deeds, and frustrations, from the time of Jacques Cartier's first voyage of exploration in 1534 to the surrender of Montreal to the British in 1760. Consisting mostly of translations from the original French, this book of documents was compiled with the purpose of placing an emphasis on the social and economic aspects of life during the French Regime in Canada." Volume II: Pre-Confederation - 242 pp, soft cover, 8 3/4" H - "(C)overs the history of British North America from the end of the French regime to 1867. Thus the history of Nova Scotia begins with the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713; that of Canada with the Treaty of Paris in 1763. New-foundland I have commenced, a little arbitrarily, in 1713; for the Hudson's Bay Company and the West I have included the Charter of 1670. Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick begin with their official establishment as provinces carved out of the old Province of Nova Scotia, in 1769 and 1784 respect-ively. The basic element in the story illustrated in this book is preforce political and constitutional history (but) at the same time I have tried to present the way various societies in British North America lived and worked." Volume III: Confederation to 1949 - 334 pp, hard cover in dust jacket, 9" H - (A) fascinating collection of first-hand accounts by some of the individuals who were actively involved in the events that led from consolidation of Confederation to Canada in the era of Post World War II. (It) indicates how Confederation was consolidated between 1967 and 1896. The emergence of modern Canada up to 1914 is then discussed. The First World War and the new economy that followed it then leads into the depression, the Second World War and industrialism. In the last part, external affairs are traced from 1914 on and Canada's international position is evaluated." THE ALGERIAN INSURRECTION, 1954-62., O'Ballance, Edgar.
107 O'Ballance, Edgar. THE ALGERIAN INSURRECTION, 1954-62.
Faber and Faber, London, (1967), first edition.
231 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w maps. "Even today there is widespread misunderstanding of the nature of the long-drawn-out and bitter struggle between the French and the Algerian nationalists. Understandable horror and dism ay at the acts of terrorism and the memory of times such as that when Paris prepared herself for an invasion by French paratroops have made detached judgement difficult. This book provides a lucid and straightforward account of the progres s o f t h e insurrection, while at the same time making clear the reasons, political as well as military, why events followed the pattern they did. (Major O'Ballance is well qualified to)....assess authoritatively the use made by the ALN - the A rm y o f N at io na l Liberation - of 'classic' guerilla strategy and techniques and the effectiveness (which was greater than is often supposed) of such French counter-measures as the Challe Plan. The often bewildering series of events which led to d e G au ll e's re tur n to power, and the background to the European insurrection of 1960 and the Generals' revolt of 1961 are set in perspective. A distinguishing feature of the Algerian revolutionary campaign is that its success depended more th an m ost on pol itic al a dr oitness and a capacity to mobilize world opinion." "....provides a historical context for prostitution in the modern Western world, and explores the sexual politics of the oldest profession. ( Philip) calls on testimony from prostitutes, clients and reformers from the last three centuries, in Britain, America and continental Europe, to build a revealing account of this complex and many-sided phenomenon. The emphasis is on the hu m a n s t o r y behind the bare commercial transaction. The author's non-judgemental stance allows us to see prostitutes as they see themselves: as working girls. The text is amplified and illuminated by over sixty illustrations, many in colour, i nc lu d in g wo rk s by artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Picasso, Grosz and Kitaj, and master photographers such as Brassai and E.J. Doubleday Canada 2012 0385670907 / 9780385670906 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). "An intricate and graceful story of the beginnings of an unlikely romance between an illiterate Parisian baker and a woman hiding in a world of books and art. Octavio Notre-Dame comes from a long line of bakers. Working the ovens of the eighth-district establishment known throughout the neighbourhood as the cake-slice, he produces baguettes and brioches with timeless perfection. Nutured by his father, Octavio discovers his imagination in stories, but like generations of Notre-Dame men before him, Octavio bears the shame of being unable to read. Isabeau Normande is born to parents devoted to appearance, to the beauty that shimmers on the surface of things. As a child she suffers a disfiguring accident. As a young woman she finds solace in the basement of the Louvre, restoring great works of art to their original glory. She loses herself in the faces of others while covering the scars that mark her own. But Isabeau's deepest comfort comes from books. Set in motion by an endearing cast of misfits - an impoverished painter, a near-blind watchmaker, a jazz-playing veteran of the trenches of World War I and a lonely bookseller - this is a story of the happenstance and fateful twists that can propel two would-be lovers into each other's paths."

"At breakfast on the morning of the battle of Waterloo, the Emperor Napoleon declared that the Duke of Wellington was a bad general, the British were bad soldiers and that France could not fail to win an easy victory. Forever afterwards, historians have accused him of gross overconfidence and massively underestimating the calibre of the British commander opposed to him. Andrew Roberts presents an original, highly revisionist view of the relationship between the two greatest captains of their age. The fascinating, constantly changing relationship between these two historical giants forms the basis of (his) compelling study in pride, rivalry, propaganda, nostalgia and posthumous revenge." When critics challenged her, she answered simply, 'Why don't you read the way I write?' Another time she said, 'I have been the creative literary mind of the century.' The amazing thing is, she was right. Gertrude Stein was perhaps the most powerful liberating force in twentieth-century literature. In her hands words took on fresh vitality; the novel, an exciting new dimension. Her books - 'Three Lives', 'Tender Buttons', 'The Making of Americans' - influenced a whole generation of writers, most famous among them Ernest Hemingway. An inspired collector, she was both friend and patron of Picasso, Matisse, Bracque. Together she and the composer Virgil Thomson made the world-famous opera 'Four Saints in Three Acts'. W.G. Rogers, a friend of many years, has written a wise and affectionate account of this extraordinary American woman, capturing the flavor of the literary and artistic world of France in the early years of the century, and - more importantly - the excitement of her own lively and inquiring mind." 120 Rosenfeld, Sophia. COMMON SENSE: A POLITICAL HISTORY.
Cambridge, Massachusetts Harvard University Press 2011 0674057813 / 9780674057814 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
337 pp, 9 1/2" H. "Common sense has always been a cornerstone of American politics. In 1776, Tom Paine's vital pamphlet with that title sparked the American Revolution. And today, common sense - the wisdom of ordinary people, knowledge so self-evident that it is beyond debate - remains a powerful political ideal, utilitzed alike by George W. Bush's aw-shucks articulations and Barack Obama's down-to-earth reasonableness. But far from self-evident is where our faith in common sense comes from and how its populist logic has shaped modern democracy. (This) is the first book to explore this essential political phenomenon. The story begins in the aftermath of England's Glorious Revoluton, when common sense first became a political ideal worth struggling over. Sophia Rosenfeld's accessible and insightful account then wends its way across two continents and multiple centuries, revealing the remarkable individuals who appropriated the old, seemingly universal idea of common sense and the new strategic uses they made of it. Paine may have boasted that common sense is always on the side of the people and opposed to the rule of kings, but Rosenfeld demonstrates that common sense has been used to foster damagoguery and exclusivity as well as popular sovereignty." Dust jacket has some very light wrinkling at top edge.
