CHATEAUX OF THE LOIRE., Dunlop, Ian. Preface by the Duc de Brissac.
108 Dunlop, Ian. Preface by the Duc de Brissac. CHATEAUX OF THE LOIRE.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1969, first edition.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, color frontispiece, b&w plates, plans. "Travellers of every age have extolled the beauties of the chateaux of the Loire....By making use of their descriptions Mr. Dunlop shows us the chateaux as they were in their prime. He resurrects the vanished glories of Le Verger, Bury, Richelieu and Chanteloup, and assigns them their proper place in the mosaic. What was it that caused the King and his Courtiers to build s o l a v i s h ly in this region? By way of an answer, the reader is taken kite-hawking and stag hunting. What purpose did the immense size of the chateaux serve? The author takes us below stairs for a look at the great hierarchy of servants w h o ma i nt ai ne d a no ble household. These castles and palaces were the background to crucial historical events. Mr. Dunlop allows eye-witnesses to speak for themselves. We watch the Conspiracy of Amboise through the eyes of the English Ambass ad or ; w e ove rhe ar th e mur der of the duc de Guise with those who were in the next room. Thre Revolution is chronicled through the windows of Cheverny. Starting with Chinon in the days of Joan of Arc and ending with the restorations of the ni net een th c en tury , th is boo k give s the most comprehensive, and certainly the most original, picture of the Chateaux of the Loire. It is not an omnibus guide book - though it would be a very useful companion on a tour of the Loire Valley. It is not a tre ati se on styl e - but t he ar chitectural student may learn a lot from it. What it is is a book for the reader who wishes to take an intelligent interest in the buildings of one of the most beautiful and historic areas of France." Li ght wrinkl ing at top /botto m of spin e. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, very light wear along top edge. Very Good+/Very Good

109 Dunn, Laurence. MERCHANT SHIPS OF THE WORLD 1910-1929 IN COLOR.
New York Macmillan 1975 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Laurence Dunn.
215 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). "The period covered by (this) volume was one of spectacular development and dramatic contrast. The First World War brought to an end a period of intense competition - competition reflected in a rapid increase in the size of individual liners. Later, during the twenties, a more restrained style emerged, less lavishly appointed and more suited to a less-affluent world. The styles of these two eras, separated by the anonymous, camouflage-conscious years of the war, were quite distinct, the post-war years bringing in a range of new shapes and profiles in funnels and sterns." "A special feature is the 80 pages of color plates by the author, which supply a unique coverage of details such as liveries, funnel marks, and houseflags." Light waviness to edges of text block, light browning to edges of text pages. Dust jacket has light browning at edges, some very light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing, a few tiny dints on panels, two tiny perforations on front flap-fold, several small light liquid marks on bottom inside edge of front panel.

THE BOYNE WATER: THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE, 1690., Ellis, Peter Berresford.
116 Ellis, Peter Berresford. THE BOYNE WATER: THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE, 1690.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1976, first edition.
163 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, map. "In the year 1690 Ireland was the pivot of the European crisis. Louis XIV had sent over the deposed king James II with French money, troops and generals in order to secure Irelan d and eventually England as allies. William III, together with other members of the League of Augsburg, sought to prevent a Jacobite restoration in England and the consequent domination of Europe by France. On 1 July 1690, the decisive da y o f t h e battle of the Boyne, the presence of troops from the continent on both sides of the river emphasized the international issues at stake. But the battle was fought for other reasons which are still remembered today. The Cromwellian la nd o wn er s a nd t h e English and Scottish Protestants in Ulster wanted to defend their property and power; the Old English Catholics and the native Irish fought to regain their confiscated lands and to drive out the alien English conquerors. H ow fa r, in fa ct, di d W il liam and James represent these respective interests and what happened after such bitter fighting? Peter Berresford Ellis describes the movements of both armies prior to the battle and the scene of the battlefield itsel f. Wi th his ch arac teri stic im partiality he assesses the personalities and strategy of the various leaders - the Earl of Tyrconnell, the young Duke of Berwick and Patrick Sarsfield on the Jacobite side and the old Duke of Shomberg, the Count of Solm s-B raun fels and Gusta vus H amil ton on the Williamite side. For it was the foresight, skills or mistakes of such men which were to determine the outcome of the battle. Vivid eye-witness accounts of soldiers captured in both camps add f eel ing t o th is st ory o f hat red, h ope an d cou rage which captured the imagination of the generations to come. But the author does not merely ascertain the military significance of William's victory. He outlines the consequences of Williamit e ru le for both Catho lics a nd Pro testant s alike , in b oth Ulster and the South, and in so doing destroys - in surprising ways - some of the myths surrounding the battle of the Boyne."
