Toronto University of Toronto Press 1968 802015301 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
344 pp, square (8 7/8" H x 8 7/8" D). B&w photographs, reproductions. "The nineteenth century opened in the flicker of tallow candles. It closed in the glare of Edison's electric lamp. Between those two events inventors and manufacturers developed a wonderful assortment of progressively more efficient lighting devices, burning a variety of fuels. Dr. Russell records with scientific attention to detail - backed up with more than 200 illustrations - how these lamps were made and used. His text is interspersed with accounts of his own experiments with the fuels and mechanisms of earlier generations. The discovery of kerosene is related in full, as is the invention of successively improved kerosene burners, lamps, and chimneys - a field up to now neglected by technological historians. Separate chapters deal with rushlights and candles; firelighting tools; pan lamps; and lamps fuelled with whale oil, lard, burning fluid, gas, and electricity. There is an extensive glossary." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny chip at bottom of front flap-fold, light rubbing to colour at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds

JESSIE WILLCOX SMITH., Schnessel, S. Michael.
108 Schnessel, S. Michael. JESSIE WILLCOX SMITH.
New York Thomas Y. Crowell 1977 0690014937 / 9780690014938 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Jessie Willcox Smith
224 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "In over 40 illustrated books and in hundreds of magazine illustrations and covers Jessie Willcox Smith pictured a child that was without equal in reality - innocent, unblemished, never naughty, always perfect. Smith's touching, sensitive portraits of children at play won her the hearts of millions of Americans in the early part of (the 20th century), just as her works are once againt captivating collectors today. From 1918 to 1932 her illustrations decorated the covers of 'Good Housekeeping' magazine. Her charming illustrations for Charles Kingsley's 'The Water Babies', published in 1916, are a high point in American illustration, representative of the finest illustrative work of the decade. One of the most prolific students of Howard Pyle, the dean of American illustration, Smith was so financially successful during her career that her friends affectionately called her 'The Mint'. This volume looks carefully at the woman and her art, illustrating some of her most delightful pictures for such works as 'The Princess and the Goblin', 'A Child's Garden of Verses', 'The Water Babies', 'The Book of the Child', and others. A study of her cover and illustrative art for American magazines features her illustrations for 'The Ladies' Home Journal', 'Good Housekeeping', 'Scribner's Magazine', 'Century', 'Woman's Home Companion' and other important turn of the century publications. Her delightful ads for Proctor and Gamble and other firms, her charming portraits of Philadelphia's children, and her posters, Christmas cards, and other works help to round out this detailed study of her career. As an aid to collectors of Smith's work, this volume features four important appendixes which give detailed listings of her illustrated books, magazine covers, illustrations, and posters." Previous owner's book plate on free front endpaper, small soft bump at top corner of front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, minor edge wear, minor rubbing.
