VERSATILE YANKEE: THE ART OF JONATHAN FISHER, 1768-1847., Winchester, Alice.
107 Winchester, Alice. VERSATILE YANKEE: THE ART OF JONATHAN FISHER, 1768-1847.
Princeton Pyne Press 1973 878610510 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Jonathan Fisher.
29 pp + 40 plates (printed on one side of leaf, captions facing), + (9) pp List of Works, 12 1/4" H. Colour plates plus additional b&w illustrations. The Reverend Jonathan Fisher of Blue Hill, Maine "was a universal man - inventor, farmer, architect and builder, surveyor, linguist, naturalist. Above all he was an artist, translating his vision of the goodness and orderliness of God's creation into paintings and woodcuts. Made for his own enjoyment and that of his family and a few friends, Fisher's paintings have largely been preserved in the small community where he lived and worked for forty years. This book, while it reveals Fisher's many-sided personality, is basically devoted to illustrating his work. The majority of his paintings are published here for the first time - the water colors from his notebooks, begun when he was an undergraduate at Harvard, and lovingly bound with his own hands; a selection of his most important paintings in oil; and many of the woodcuts with which he illustrated his books. Here, carefully recorded, with straight-forward and painstaking realism, are Fisher's college and his village, the fruits of his garden, and the animals and birds of field and forest. No subject is too small to engage his interest, none too dry to be transformed by his imagination. The common house fly and a wondrous carrot are fully detailed; garlands of fruits and flowers run riot through his mathematical exercises." Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, three edge tears archivally taped, very light rubbing, several light scratches on rear panel.

JOHN WORSLEY'S WAR. AN OFFICIAL WAR ARTIST IN WORLD WAR II., Worsley, John and Giggal, Kenneth.
108 Worsley, John and Giggal, Kenneth. JOHN WORSLEY'S WAR. AN OFFICIAL WAR ARTIST IN WORLD WAR II.
Shrewsbury Air Life 1993 1853102571 / 9781853102578 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- John Worsley.
116 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour reproductions of the author/artist's work. "John Worsley was one of the very few active service artists of the Second World War, and in this book he recalls his experiences both in active sea warfare and later as a prisoner of war. At the outbreak of war the twenty-year-old John Worsley joined up as a Midshipman and during off duty moments sketched his fellow sailors and incidental scenes of life at sea. Having survived the sinking of his first ship, HMS Laurentic, destroyer service on Atlantic convoys and, during 1942, troop convoys from the Red Sea to Australia in the cruiser HMS Devonshire, in 1943 he was made an Official Naval War Artist on the Commander-in-Chief's staff, Malta. After covering the first Italian landing in the Straits of Messina at Reggio and later the landing at Salerno, he moved on to cover some of the nefarious activities opening up the Naval front in the Adriatic and there was captured by the Germans. As a prisoner he continued depicting the PoW life around him and helped to produce forged identity papers and, most ingenious of all, he created 'Albert', the successful dummy Naval Officer escape device used both for the initial escape of one prisoner, and also as his stand-in on three roll calls a day for four days after. The celebrated film 'Albert RN' is based on this episode. (This book) captures the sense of immediacy and intimacy that comes from an on-the-spot artist depicting his own world." Slight 2" line indentation and faint rub line on front board. Dust jacket has minor wear at top/bottom of spine, several light scratches on front panel - no colour loss, very small sticker pull on front panel, light rubbing.
