SKY GODS: THE SUN AND MOON IN ART AND MYTH., Komaroff, Katherine.
103 Komaroff, Katherine. SKY GODS: THE SUN AND MOON IN ART AND MYTH.
New York Universe Books 1974 0876631871 / 9780876631874 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
86 pp, 11 5/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "Ever since the beginning of time, man has wondered about the meaning and behavior of the sun and moon. He has carefully observed their cycles and realized their importance for his own survival. The close contact with nature that ancient man enjoyed made him more conscious of their presence, whether he lived in a place constantly warmed by the sun or in a bitter cold world where the sun seemed far away. Ancient men tried to explain the meaning of this mysterious phenomenon in stories closely related to their own lives and religious beliefs. The Hindu people of India thought that the sun was a red man with four arms in a golden chariot. For the Egyptians, the sun was a great watchful eye. The North American Indians said that the moon was a great ball of light tossed into the sky by a clever creature called Raven. The Eskimos believed that the moon was a powerful hunter who often stood in front of his igloo. These stories, called myths, are handed down from generation to generation, and celebrate the great mystery of life. They are loved because of their beauty and power and also for what they tell us about people of other cultures. In 'Sky Gods', myths from India, Egypt, Africa, Japan, China, the Eskimos, and the Indians of North and South America are lucidly retold and illustrated with stunning photographs of art and artifacts from the various cultures. There is a common message behind all these stories. Although the masks, paintings, statues, and other works of art also vary - some are relatively simple, others are highly sophisticated - yet they all contain clues to a deeper understanding of the beauty and mysteriousness of the universe." Two large diagonal creases on free rear endpaper, light stain along bottom edge of rear board, very small light stain on top edge of front board, one soft corner crease. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing and two light scuff lines on rear panel, small stain at inside bottom edge of rear panel, one small edge tear.

108 Lancourt, Saul. (Alexander Pushkin.) THE BUMBLE BEE PRINCE. A JUNIOR PROGRAMS BOOK.
New York Garden City Publishing 1940 Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Sheilah Beckett.
Unpaginated (approx. 36 pp), 9 1/2" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w and colour illustrations throughout, some musical notation. "This is a story of old Russia, when that faraway land was ruled by the jolly Tzar Saltan. It is the story of lovely young Militrissa who became the Tzar's bride and of Nastasia, her jealous sister, who plotted against her with their wicked nurse, Barbarischa. For a time their schemes were successful, and poor Militrissa and her little son, Prince Guidon, were tossed on the sea for many days and nights with only a barrel as their boat. How they were finally saved and how the young Prince was magically transformed into a bumble bee is all told in this exciting book. Based on an original poem by Alexander Pushkin, this bright, fanciful fairy tale has been brought joyously to life by the Junior Programs opera, 'The Bumble Bee Prince'. The opera, with its beautiful Rimsky-Korsakov music, is a favorite of children everywhere. This book follows its action closely and includes many of the principal musical themes." While, across the vast sea, bloody war shattered a peace that had flourished for two thousand years in the doomed kingdom of Atlantis. It is the remarkable adventure of Charis - the courageous princess from Atlantis who escapes the terrible devastation of her land - and of the fabled seer and druid prince Taliesin, singer at the dawn of the age. A story of an incomparable love that joins two astonishing worlds amid the fires of chaos, and spawns the miracles of Merlin - and Arthur the king!". 2. Merlin - 447 pp, 1990, 4th printing, ISBN 0380708892 - "He was born to greatness, the son of a druid bard and a princess of lost Atlantis. A trained warrior, blessed with the gifts of prophecy and song, he grew to manhood in a Britain abandoned by its Roman conquerors - a land ravaged by the brutual greed of petty chieftains and barbarian invaders. Respected, feared and hated by many, he was to have a higher destiny: to prepare the way for the momentous event that would unite the Island of the Mighty - the coming of Arthur Pendragon, Lord of the Kingdom of Summer." 3. Arthur - 446 pp, 1990, 2nd printing, ISBN 0380708906 - "They called him unfit to rule - a lowborn, callow boy, Uther's bastard. But his coming had been foretold in the songs of the bard Taliesin. He had learned powerful secrets at the knee of the mysical sage Merlin. He was Arthur, Pendragon of the Island of the Mighty - who would rise to legendary greatness in a Britain torn by violence, greed, and war - who would usher in a glorious reign of peace and prosperity - and who would fall at the treacherous hands of the one he loved more than life." 4. Pendragon - 436 pp, 1995, 4th printing, ISBN 0380717573 - "Arthur is King - but darkest evil has descended upon Britain's shores in many guises. Fragile alliances fray and tear, threatening all the noble liege has won with this wisdom and his blood. In this black time of plague and pestilence, Arthur's most trusted counselor Myrddin - the warrior, bard, and kingmaker whom legend will name Merlin - is himself to be tested on a mystical journey through his own extraordinary past. So Arthur must stand alone against a great and terrible adversary. For only thus can he truly win immortality - and the name he will treasure above all others: Pendragon." 5. Grail - 385 pp, 1998, 4th printing, ISBN 0380781042 - "Drought, plague, and war have left the Isle of the Mighty battered and its heart, the beloved Arthur, grievously injured - until a secret relic is brought before the dying King; a Holy Grail that heals his wounds and restores his vigor. But soon evil enters the royal court in the guise of a beautiful maiden; a soulless, malevolent force capable of seducing the King's loyal champion, confounding the sage whom some call Merlin, and carrying the sacred Grail - and Arthur's adored Queen - off into the dark unknown. And now Arthur faces the greatest challenge of his sovereignty: a quest of recovery that must lead the noble liege through realms of magic and the undead, on a trail that winds inexorably toward a grim confrontation with his most foul nemesis - and his destiny." "When they went into battle they wore no costly armor, just birchbark wrapped around their legs, and so they were called 'Birkebeiners', which means 'Birchleggers'. It is the year 1206, and deep in the snow-covered mountains and valleys of Norway, the fiercest warriors in the land struggle to ski a baby to safety. Here is an untold story of both bravery and tenderness. 'The Sea-Maiden' is a story with many twists and turns, in which the young man Cathal undergoes strange adventures and has to kill a three-headed monster before he can win the princess. These are very old stories, but Ruth Marris tells them as if they were new, writing with such freshness and vividness that we can almost see the green hills in which they are set. Miles Thistlethwaite's (20) beautiful drawings add to the power of the stories." Small light waterstain at top edge of free front endpaper, two very small dints on rear board, wrinkling at bottom of spine, very light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has two very small dints on rear panel, light edge wear/wrinkling, a few very tiny chips/tears, light rubbing, light waterstain at top of front flap. VG/VG
