New York Barnes & Noble 1993 0880295198 / 9780880295192 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
628 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Here in one volume, is a classic of Western literature - the complete fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. These magnificent tales, which date back to the dawn of storytelling among the people of Northern Europe, was first compiled by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and were published in Germany in 1812 and 1815. Since then, selections from these stories have appeared and reappeared in countless translations throughout the world. It is a rare event, however, to offer 'Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales' in a large, one volume edition, complete, unabridged and unexpurgated. (Over 200 tales, with all the) old favorites - The Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and others - and many little-known treasures such as The Juniper Tree, Clever Gretel, King Thrushbeard, and The Singing, Soaring Lark." THE BANTAMS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF WORLD WAR I., Allinson, Sidney.
2 Allinson, Sidney. THE BANTAMS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF WORLD WAR I.
Mosaic, (Oakville, 1982).
287 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. B&w photos. "At the outset of the 1914-18 War, no recruiting officer would look at any young man who was in less than the prime and peak of physical condition...Any volunteer who was less than the regulation five feet three inches in height got very short shrift...But the war was not very old before the official reaction to undersized volunteers had to change dramatically. Britain's Regular Army, the Expeditionary Force, was virtually wiped out in the first months of fighting...This book relates the history of the Bantam Battalions from beginning to bloody end - one might almost say 'out of nowhere, back into obscurity', for it is suprising how many official histories of the Great War have ignored the very real part these little men played..." Exterior - light browning to edges of textblock, tiny stain of fore-edge of textblock, light browning to edges of covers, very light wear at top of spine, slight curling to fore-edge of covers. VG-

54 pp + b&w plates and "Notes on the Prints", 11" H. "Washington Irving's two tales, 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' and 'Rip Van Winkle' have remained a permanent feature on the American literary landscape long after the bulk of his twenty-four volume work has faded into scholarly obscurity. Present-day readers can be grateful that Irving forsook the study of law for literature on the basis of these two works alone. Edgar Allen Poe called him 'the most deservedly eminent among all the pioneers of American literature', and he was accepted as a peer by contemporaries Sir Walter Scott and Lord Byron. Irving kept a sketchbook of his travels, and his painter's eye has attracted such master illustrators as Barry Moser, whose wood engravings were created especially for this volume and who also designed the text." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, small ghost sticker mark on fornt panel, tiny scuff and a tiny white dot in title on front panel, minor soiling on rear panel.

THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE., Keightley, Thomas.

New York Avenel 1978 0517263130 / 9780517263136 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
560 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. First Avenel reprinting of the 1878 G. Bell edition. "Kelpies, Korrigans, Pixies and Peries, Deeves, Brownies, and Bugaboos - these are just a few of the fantastic figures you will encounter in this unique collection of fairy mythology. Gnomes, faries, and elves of every imaginable size, shape, color, and demeanor spring to life in this marvelously illustrated guide to the fairy realm. Just one glance at the extensive table of contents reveals the scope and variety of fairy folklore explored here - from Persian and Arabian romance to the mythology of Scandinavia, England, France, Germany, and Switzerland. In addition, the author includes sections dealing with the more obscure fairy folkore and tradition of Greece, Spain, Italy, Africa, and the Middle East. Indeed, (he) has left no stone unturned in accomplishing the task he set for himself: 'to collect, arrange and classify and give under one point of view the various ideas and legends respecting fairies and similar beings of the popular creed.' Taken from a variety of sources of popular myth and legend, (it) forms a rich compendium of the superstitions surrounding those enchanting lesser deities, 'the little people'. Not only does (he) explore every type and species, but he also traces resemblances and similarities among the fairy traditions of different countries. For instance, did you know that the Nis (Scandianavia), the Kobold (Germany), and the Goblin (England) are all names for one species, which appears in Scotland under the name of Brownie, and that the Brownie is a person of small stature and wrinkled visage, is covered with short and curly brown hair, and wears a brown mantle and hood? In addition, Keightley discusses the fairy tradition as it appears in major works of English literature, from the Middle Age epic of 'Beowulf' and Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' to Spencer's 'The Faerie Queene' and Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'." Light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two repaired small tears at top of spine. Dust jacket has several archivally taped tears - mainly at top of spine/hinges - one with creases, light browning at top inside of spine.
