From the dust jacket of 'The Bombay Marines': "Newly returned from a successful assignment to rid the Arabian Se a of pirates, Captain Adam Horne of the frigate 'Eclipse' is summoned to the presence of his commading officer, Commodore Watson, head of the East India Company's private fighting unit, the much derided Bombay Marines. It is 1761, and Pond i c h e r r y , last stronghold of the French in the Indian subcontinent, has just fallen to the British. Now Captain Horne is given a strange and secret mission: to capture the defeated French commander Thomas Lally, from his prison at Fort St. G eo rg e in M ad ra s - or the unit will be disbanded for failure. Due to the deployment of most of the Marines on the east coast of India, Horne's force is seriously undermanned. He is left with only one choice: to take his pick of the motley co lle cti on of th iev es, r ap ists and murderers held in the prisons of Bombay Castle and subject them to intensive training for the most closely guarded campaign of the Seven Years' War. Drawing on a wealth of historical characters and events, and on l itt le-s tudi ed d ocum ent s o f the East India Company's early history, the action moves from sea to land, from the colourful waterfront of Bombay to the sadistic penal colony of Bull Island and the final, cataclysmic denouement within th e wa lls o f Fo rt St . Geo rge. In C apta in A dam Horne Porter Hill has created a character as vivid as Hornblower and Ramage, a man who has rejected the prestige of service in the Royal Navy or the East India Company's Maritime Service for the d ashin g, dar e-dev il lif e of h istor y's fi rst c omman do-style unit, operating amid the exotic dangers of Britain's most coveted oriental territories...." THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE., Keightley, Thomas.
6 Keightley, Thomas. THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE.
New York Avenel 1978 0517263130 / 9780517263136 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
560 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. First Avenel reprinting of the 1878 G. Bell edition. "Kelpies, Korrigans, Pixies and Peries, Deeves, Brownies, and Bugaboos - these are just a few of the fantastic figures you will encounter in this unique collection of fairy mythology. Gnomes, faries, and elves of every imaginable size, shape, color, and demeanor spring to life in this marvelously illustrated guide to the fairy realm. Just one glance at the extensive table of contents reveals the scope and variety of fairy folklore explored here - from Persian and Arabian romance to the mythology of Scandinavia, England, France, Germany, and Switzerland. In addition, the author includes sections dealing with the more obscure fairy folkore and tradition of Greece, Spain, Italy, Africa, and the Middle East. Indeed, (he) has left no stone unturned in accomplishing the task he set for himself: 'to collect, arrange and classify and give under one point of view the various ideas and legends respecting fairies and similar beings of the popular creed.' Taken from a variety of sources of popular myth and legend, (it) forms a rich compendium of the superstitions surrounding those enchanting lesser deities, 'the little people'. Not only does (he) explore every type and species, but he also traces resemblances and similarities among the fairy traditions of different countries. For instance, did you know that the Nis (Scandianavia), the Kobold (Germany), and the Goblin (England) are all names for one species, which appears in Scotland under the name of Brownie, and that the Brownie is a person of small stature and wrinkled visage, is covered with short and curly brown hair, and wears a brown mantle and hood? In addition, Keightley discusses the fairy tradition as it appears in major works of English literature, from the Middle Age epic of 'Beowulf' and Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' to Spencer's 'The Faerie Queene' and Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'." Light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two repaired small tears at top of spine. Dust jacket has several archivally taped tears - mainly at top of spine/hinges - one with creases, light browning at top inside of spine.

REMEMBER WITH ADVANTAGES: A HISTORY OF THE TENTH, ELEVENTH AND ROYAL HUSSARS, 1945-1992., Keown-Boyd, Henry.
7 Keown-Boyd, Henry. REMEMBER WITH ADVANTAGES: A HISTORY OF THE TENTH, ELEVENTH AND ROYAL HUSSARS, 1945-1992.
Leo Cooper, London, (1994), first edition.
296 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps, color plates. "The 10th Royal Hussars (PWO) and the 11th Hussars (PAO) were both raised in 1715 as regiments of Light Dragoons to deal with troubles north of the Scottish border. Both went on to win huge acclaim until, and indeed after, their amalgamation in 1969 as The Royal Hussars (PWO). Now they have had to face up to yet another amalgamation to form with the 14th/20th Hussars, The King's Royal Hussars. This book, written by a former officer of the 11th Hussars (PAO), traces the history of the two regiments from 1945 until the first amalgamation and then details the sadly short-lived history of The Royal Hussars (PWO) up to the time of the second amalgamation in 1992. Depressing as all that may sound, Henry Keown-Boyd shows that, in spite of all, the regimental spirit, the traditional loyalties, the time-honoured customs and the determination to succeed, survive and flourish. Both regiments have had numerous periods of active service since the Second World War and in this book descriptions of duties in Malaya, Arabia and Northern Ireland, among others, are much enhanced by recollections of those who took part . All of the four original regiments now brought together have their roots deeply planted in the history of the British Army and none are likely to dispute the fact that the new King's Royal Hussars will add further laurels to the wreath. Certainly, this is a most worthy tribute to one half of the newly formed regiment." Very faint cigarette odor, bump to top of rear hinge/spine. Dust jacket has light rubbing, creasing at top of spine. VG/VG

SAND DANCE: BY CAMEL ACROSS ARABIA'S GREAT SOUTHERN DESERT., Kirkby, Bruce. Foreword by Sir Wilfred Thesiger.
8 Kirkby, Bruce. Foreword by Sir Wilfred Thesiger. SAND DANCE: BY CAMEL ACROSS ARABIA'S GREAT SOUTHERN DESERT.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 2000 0771095643 / 9780771095641 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
219 pp + glossary, selected bibliography& acknowledgements, 10" H. B&w map, colour photographs. "For forty days and forty nights during the winter of 1999, three Canadians along with three Omani Bedu, travelled by camel across Arabia's great southern desert - the legendary Empty Quarter. Journeying from Salala in Oman on the Arabian Sea, they headed north and east for 1,200 kilometres across remote and largely unexplored desert wilderness, where ranges of sand dunes tower to over three hundred metres in height. When they finally reached Abu Dhabi on the Persian Gulf, they were received as heroes. Theirs was the first camel crossing of the Empty Quarter in over fifty years. During the desert crossing the team was determined to travel and live as authentically as possible, on camels, taking Arabic names and wearing traditional clothing, drinking their water from rank goatskins and eating mainly unleavened bread and dried camel meat. The cultural insights they were afforded are constantly fascinating - but so are the cultural clashes, since the party was often followed by Land Cruisers full of well-meaning supporters who threatened to destroy the spirit of the journey. Now Bruce Kirkby has written a thoughtful and deeply felt account of this challenging expedition - and has illustrated it with twenty-four pages of his stunning colour photographs." Very slight small bump on fore-edge of rear board, very slight lean to spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

T.E. LAWRENCE TO HIS BIOGRAPHERS, ROBERT GRAVES AND LIDDELL HART., Lawrence, T.E.
9 Lawrence, T.E. T.E. LAWRENCE TO HIS BIOGRAPHERS, ROBERT GRAVES AND LIDDELL HART.
London Cassell 1963 Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
260 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w frontispiece. "Robert Graves and Basil Liddell Hart wrote the only two authorized biographies of T.E. Lawrence during his lifetime. Both knew the man well and at the time of his death on May 11th, 1935, their association with him had grown into understanding based on sympathetic knowledge and respect Yet the two had never met; Lawrence kept his friendships sealed off from one another as far as he was able. While engaged on their biographies, both wrote frequent letters asking him for elucidation of particular events and sent typescripts for his comments and corrections. Liddell Hart met him frequently for informal talks. After Lawrence's death, both made selections from the material in their possession which they thought best illustrated his character and qualities, and in 1939 published them in two companion volumes as a limited edition. Now, twenty-four years later, it is possible to republish these selections in a single volume. (T)hey throw a searching light upon a man who was twice a legend, once in his own lifetime, and now again after his death. Of particular interest is the way Lawrence showed different facets of his chameleon-like character to each of his friends. He said himself that he was more a legion than a man - an oblique reference to the demoniac of Gerasa in the Gospel - and here, placed side by side, is the evidence of two synonymous relationships of remarkably different character. His letters to Liddel Hart are businesslike, graphic, factual: to Graves they are more concerned with self-analysis, but cast a deliberate veil over the inner man, only rarely twitched aside. The total impression is a most persuasive defence against such as Adlington's attempts to explode the Arabian 'legend'. They build up a strong impression of Lawrence's particular talents, his remarkable achievements, his enigmatic personality." Previous owner's name stamp at top of both pastedown end papers, small store label at bottom of front pastedown, light patches of liquid staining on top of text block, minor soiling on bottom of text block, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at bottom of rear hinge, light rubbing, minor soiling.

Toronto Dundurn 2008 155002793X / 9781550027938 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
248 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "Steamboats carrying passengers from Hamilton to Montreal via the rapids of the St. Lawrence were a popular sight in the latter half of the nineteenth century. In 1855, the 'Kingston', an iron steamboat built for John Hamilton, appeared on the Great Lakes. When the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) toured British North America in 1860, the 'Kingston' became his floating palace for much of his time between Quebec and Toronto. While many steamboats claimed to be floating palaces, the 'Kingston' truly was one. The 'Kingston' was wrecked many times and survived spectacular fires in 1872 and 1873. Late in her career, she was converted into a salvage vessel and renamed the 'Cornwall'. In 1930 she was finally taken out and sunk near one of Kingston's ship graveyards. There she remained until diver Rick Neilson discovered her in 1989. Today, the once-palatial 'Kingston' is a popular dive site and tourist attraction." THE PERSIAN EXPEDITION., Xenophon. Translated by Rex Warner.
13 Xenophon. Translated by Rex Warner. THE PERSIAN EXPEDITION.
Penguin, Baltimore, Maryland, 1965, book club edition.
309 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map. "One of history's most remarkable military achievements - the march of the Ten Thousand Greeks - is detailed in this highly readable first-hand account by a dynamic leader. Cool, calculating and brilliant, Xenophon emerges as a fascinating military figure. In (this book) he reveals the character, training and strategy that made the Greek soldier so efficient. In the fourth century B.C. Cyrus the Younger, pretender to the Persian thron e, launched a fierce campaign against his brother the king. With the help of Greek troops, whom he recognized as the best infantrymen in the world, Cyrus believed he could surprise and defeat his brother's vastly superior force and seize the throne . Unfortunately Cyrus' own troops were not as effective as his Greek recruits, and the force as a whole was weak in cavalry. The campaign collapsed, Cyrus himself was killed and the Greeks were stranded in Persia. Surrounded by a hostile and bitt er foe, Xenophon and his fellow leaders faced the incredible task of leading ten thousand men back from Babylon to the Black Sea. The success of the five-month march - one of the most famous in history - was a triumph of discipline and improvisatio n in the face of overwhelming odds. For Xenophon not only managed to lead his men out of Persia but succeeded in keeping the army intact as a fighting force. (This) is both an absorbing tale of adventure and military skill and an unusual story of human character. It also presents a revealing account of the day-to-day life of the common soldier unique in classical writing."
