THE SMUG MINORITY., Berton, Pierre.
2 Berton, Pierre. THE SMUG MINORITY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
160 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This is a book about freedom - and the lack of it - in Canada: freedom from useless and often degrading toil; freedom from want and freedom from ignorance. It is Berton's thesis, documented by public statments made over the past generation, that a smug minority of business and political leaders has conspired to inhibit that freedom. The author indicts his fellow countrymen for failing to invest in human beings in the same way that they invest in power plants, highways, and gold mines. His researches into poverty in Canada and into the inequalities of the education system will shock a good many readers just as his theories on work and leisure will enrage others raised in the Calvinist ethic. The book ranges over a wide variety of topics: the hippie movement in Toronto's Yorkville village - the author's personal experiences in a Yukon mining camp - the future of educational television in Canada - and the Chamber of Commerce's abortive 'Operation Freedom' campaign. But always Berton hammers on his central theme - that the nation has been held back by an inbred power-elite: 'Selfish, narrow, short-sighted men unable to grasp the vision of the future, imprisoned by a bookkeeping attitude to life, creeping silently and blindly along at the tag end of the parade of progress'." Small stamp mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, light to moderate rubbing - mostly on rear panel, one small edge tear archivally taped.

291 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 077351757X "...argues that Catholics and Protestants shared very similar views of Christian womanhood. Both lauded the influence of the virtuous Christian woman, used the same female r ole models from the Bible, and saw the home as the locus of the construction of female piety. Yet each group castigated the other for having antifemale values. Protestants developed the slovenly, drunken 'Biddy' as a stereotype of Catholic women and Catholics portrayed Protestant devotional and family life as cold and arid. Observers of present-day Northern Ireland will find these historical contrasts of immediate relevance." McGill-Queen's University Press, Kingston, (1994), Ist printing.
309 pp, 8vo, HC in dust jacket. "...offers a new perspective on industrial capitalism and class formation in Canada. Using Brantford, Ontario, as a case study, he provides a cultural analysis of the business community during the mid-nineteenth cen tury and shows that, because self-employment was so pervasive, the impact of industrializatin was particularly striking. Self-employed businessmen were forced to try to locate themselves in an emerging class system that often contradic t e d t r a d i t i o n al Victorian social ideals of independence and manliness. Burley's exploration of the tensions behind the conflicting values - tension both between myth and reality and within the bourgois world view of itself - is an impor ta nt a d di ti on t o th e li te rature on business behaviour and Victorian cultural history." THE MYTHIC WORLD OF THE ZUNI., Cushing, Frank Hamilton. Edited by Barton Wright.
9 Cushing, Frank Hamilton. Edited by Barton Wright. THE MYTHIC WORLD OF THE ZUNI.
Albuquerque University of New Mexico Press 1994 0826313876 / 9780826313874 Second Printing Soft Cover Very Good - Barton Wright.
167 pp, 10" H. B&w illustrations. "First recorded over a hundred years ago by Frank Hamilton Cushing (the first participant observer of a native American Indian population), these tales have remained buried in an 1891 Bureau of American Ethnology report. Barton Wright has collected twenty-five of them, edited them, and provided extensive annotation. He shows how each myth compares to its parallel among other pueblos, glosses native terms, and illustrates each story with excellent scratchboard drawings. Within the Zuni world of myth and legends lies tales of adventure, epic journeys, and tragedy, which relate history, teach moral values, explain ceremonies, and offer amusement as well. Representing just a sampling of what is available in Zuni oral tradition, these twenty-five myths present Zuni thought on the origins of the cosmos, the deities, the earth, and the all important food, corn. They explain social organization, the Kach'ina Cult, and the early wanderings of the Zuni or A'shiwi around the Southwest." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - small bump to bottom corner of front cover - migrates into pages, small crease at top corner of front cover, minor wear at bottom of spine.

566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." Minor browning at top edge of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very small dent on front hinge.

318 pp, 9 1/4" H. "(T)he culmination of the writing career of a man who has struggled all his life against social injustice and irrelevant religious orthodoxies. This book is more than the ecumenical discuss-ion of sex-related issues from a minister's point of view; it is a candid commentary on our time - a time of sexual revolution and human turmoil when old values are questioned and new answers must be found. By analyzing the historical and social aspects of sex, sexuality and sexism and the role of the clergy within the framework of the Judeo-Christian tradition, the author has woven his thoughts into a colorful fabric; his wisdom, wit and candor, combined with his superb literary skills, shine through on every page. The autobiographical data and references are an added bonus, providing insight into the nature of this visionary philosopher and lover of humankind. 226 pp, 9 5/16" H. "As an introduction to modern myth, (this book) masterfully encompasses a wide circle of historical and literary materials. John Greenway examines first the nature of time in the mythic consciousness, then the role of the Nordic past as a myth of origins from the Renaissance through the romantics. Only in the various forms of myth can man find identity, the author argues, and he sees the varying images of the Viking past as unconscious attempts by northern nations to legitimize their own values. Central to (his) methodology is his discussion of the sacred in language not itself sacred and the failure of modern myth to make the primitive distinction between the sacred and the profane. The author establishes the theoretical base of his discussion by examining the nature of time in mythic consciousness in terms of Norse myth. After suggesting several ways in which the mythic apprehension of reality conditioned medieval Icelandic narrative, (he) elaborates on the dialectical relationship between myth and reason, using as an example the conversion of the Germanic tribes to Christianity. Maintaining that myth is neither true nor false but always either expressive or not, Greenway traces the origin, rise, and fall of two great modern myths of northern birth: Swedish Gothicism in the seventeenth century and the Ossianic craze of the eighteenth. Both myths, one social, the other literary, illustrate the singular tension in the modern mind between mythic imperatives and the impulse to de-mythologize. Finally, 'The Golden Horns' traces the romantic belief in a 'new mythology' which synthesizes myth and reason from its early acceptance through its eventual repudiation. In his conclusions about the state of myth in the modern world, Greenway postulates that we have inherited the romantic respect for myth as truth but lack the romantic faith in transcendence necessary to establish myth's reality. We are trapped in a physical and moral world which we, as romantics, recognize to be symbolic in its representations, but we lack a belief in the transcendental reality of these symbols." 163 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "In this comprehensive analysis of a woman hailed by her fellow Britons as a 'National Monument', Nancy Huse argures that Streatfeild's work challenges the status of 'girl's books', described in most criticism as ephemeral or constituting a category separate from 'great books'. Huse attributes the appeal of Streatfeild's books to their contemporary themes and traditional values and finds that in exploring the tensions of heredity and environment Streatfeild anticipates many contemporary questions about the role of women, the structure of the family, and the implications of the class system. In particular, Huse notes, Streatfeild (in both her children's and adult novels) used the poverty of women and their work in the domestic sphere to link the public with the private worlds shaping children. Streatfeild's conservative upbringing, rebellious youth, and complex life-long relationship with her family provided material for her novels, according to Huse. Streatfeild developed a conscious perspective on childhood that she used to defend child/adult boundaries while sharpening story forms. At the same time, Huse contends, her multifaceted talent admitted new subjects, character types, themes, and information into the children's book because she assumed competence and intelligent curiosity as the basis of children's contributions to the family and to society. In this vibrant portrait of the life and work of such an innovative children's writer, Huse suggests some meaningful ways to evaluate the family novel, the role of a children's novelist in preserving and constructing a historical record, and the implications of formulaic patterns that derive from female experience." Minor wrinkle at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, light creasing at top of rear panel near flap-fold, minor wear at top of rear flap-fold.
