Mrs. Candy and her pets: the cat, the dog, the cow and the chickens are entranced with all the new stories. There are green-clad dancers who vanish at cockcrow. A strange feathered child hatches from a speckled egg. A baby is fished out of the sea. Ordinary-seeming children make snowmen who can talk, and have a friend who is a witch. 3 Arnup, John D. MIDDLETON: THE BELOVED JUDGE.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1988 0771007959 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
202 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of Ontario's and Canada's greatest judges, William Edward Middleton (1860-1948), who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario for thirty-three years, twenty-two of them as an appellate judge. At a time when a number of Supreme Court justices were belligerent to counsel and irascible toward their brother judges, Mr. Justice Middleton set a high standard of courtesy and civility that has carried on to the present day. Because (he) never sought attention or encouraged controversy, his contributions have been known heretofore only in legal circles. Yet here is a man whose written judgments are still cited fifty, sixty, even seventy years later, the judge who sat on 'the Great Stork Derby' case of the 1930s, and who decided which of the two litigious Kellogg brothers could sell his corn flakes in Canada. In addition, Middleton was a renowned botanist and legal scholar. The prison inmates of his Bible class knew him better and appreciated his exemplary character far more than the average citizen. (This book) is rich with anecdotage and presents important legal cases in a manner the general reader can understand and appreciate." Minor old tape residue at top/bottom edges of free endpapers, small corner crease on page 7, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small ink mark on bottomm edge of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one or two very tiny edge tears, minor rubbing.

"From its modest importance in the late 1960s, Toronto has developed into one of the world's greatest financial and communications capitals. 'Toronto' chronicles the city's rise to corporate power by outlining the large-scale development of the downtown core, which spawned Bay Street as Canada's answer to Wall Street. Tracing Toronto's history from its humble beginnings as a fur-trading post in the 1600s, the following pages detail the construction of Toronto's important rapid-transit system, which features one of the world's most extensive subway lines, and looks at the city's exciting Harbourfront development. From the world-renowned Canadian National Exhibition and the Roy Thomson Hall to the man-made islands of Ontario Place and the SkyDome, stunning colour photography and an authoritative text portray Toronto as the ever-growing metropolis it truly is. OUR INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS / 'ENGLISH-CANADIAN LITERATURE' / 'FRENCH-CANADIAN LITERATURE., Bourinot, John George; Marquis, Thomas Guthrie; Roy, Camille. Introduction by Clara Thomas.
12 Bourinot, John George; Marquis, Thomas Guthrie; Roy, Camille. Introduction by Clara Thomas. OUR INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS / 'ENGLISH-CANADIAN LITERATURE' / 'FRENCH-CANADIAN LITERATURE.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1973.
489 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), soft cover. "These three works, displaying marked differences in purpose, tone, and effect, are all classics of Canadian literary and cultural criticism. John George Bourinot was a man of letters, an Imperialist, and a bic ulturalist, who was confident of his knowledge of the Canadian identity and felt it to be his public mission to align reality with his own personal vision. Writing in 1893 to the elite represented by the members of the Royal Society, he d e s c r i b e d h is work as 'a monograph on the intellectual development of the Dominion', describing 'the progress of culture in a country still struggling with the difficulties of the material development of half a continent'. Two decades later , Th om as G ut hr ie Ma rquis and Camille Roy wrote what were, in contrast, specialized assignments, contributions to the compendium history, 'Canada and Its Provinces' (1913). Addressing a far larger audience, and treating a vastly enlarged bod y of Can adi an lit era tur e , t heir work comes much closer to contemporary scholarship, with greater clarity, organization, and sheer bulk of information, but with the loss of some of the charm and assurance of Bourinot's wide sweep. In further co ntr ast to B our inot 's d eter mi ned biculturalism and will to unity, Roy and Marquis' essays display vivid differences in the emotional allegiances and convictions of the founding cultures. Marquis starts by asking the question, 'Has Canada a vo ice of h er ow n in lite ratur e dis tin ct f rom that of England?'; Roy treats French-Canadian literature in its Roman Catholic contexts." Interior - one small dog-ear crease, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - l ight to m oderat e bro wning, light brown ing on sp ine and on rear cover, light browning on top of textblock. Very Good-

F-15 EAGLE., Braybrook, Roy.
13 Braybrook, Roy. F-15 EAGLE.
Osprey, London, 1991, first edition.
128 pp, 11 7/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1855321491 Profuesly illustrated with colour photographs. "Built to counter the seemingly invincible Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat, the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle has proven to be more than a match for any 'red' fighter interceptor for over 15 years. Carrying the all-seeing Hughes AN/APG-63 radar inside its massive radome, the interception capabilities of the Eagle have been matched only by its US Navy rival, the F-14 Tomcat. Although a large ae roplane, the Eagle is incredibly agile, with plenty of power from its twin afterburning Pratt & Whitney F-100 tubrofans. These allow a pilot to exploit the F-15 Eagle's suberb in-flight characteristics to the fullest extent. Entering frontline s q u adron service with the USAF's Tactical Air Command in late 1974, the F-15 has gone on to equip no less than six tactical fighter wings based in the USA, and one apiece in Germany and Japan. Five Air National Guard units also bolster the fron t li ne r anks with earlier version of the mighty Eagle. All USAF operators of the potent F-15 are graphically featured in this stunning volume. A chapter on the rarely illustrated Japanese Air Self-Defence Force complements the star-spangled F-1 5s ." Mi nor edge wear, small faint erasure mark at top of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, some areas of light wrinkling at top edge. Very Good-/Very Good

F/A-18 HORNET., Braybrook, Roy.
14 Braybrook, Roy. F/A-18 HORNET.
Osprey, London, 1991, first edition.
128 pp, 11 7/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1855321513 Profuesly illustrated with colour photographs. "The 'son' of the Northrop YF-17 Cobra, the Hornet grew both in weight and capability after being ordered by the Navy to replace the vene rable Vought A-7 Corsair II. Now an integral part of the modern carrier air wing, the F/A-18 has dramatically increased the capabilities of fighter and attack squadrons already embarked aboard the Navy's 15-strong carrier fleet. Not all Hornet s s p otted in American skies are Navy property though, the 'flying leathernecks' of the US Marine Corps having received their first F/A-18s at virtually the same time as the 'blue water' force. Over a dozen USMC squadrons are now equipped with th e v er sa tile Hornet. Travelling further afield, Canada, Australia, Spain and South Korea have all chosen the F/A-18 to fulfill the fighter/attack requirements of their respective air forces past the year 2000. (This book) takes you aboard ship w it h a f ron tline Navy squadron as they patrol the barren expanses of the Atlantic, or takes you on a scrub skimming attack sortie over the parched wastelands of the 'outback' with the Royal Australian Air Force." Book slightly cocked, very light edg e wear , sm all faint erasure mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor edge wrinkling. Very Good/Very Good

"In 1928, the year in which Alcan began its own journey, the fledgling company's prospects were not bright, and within four years they had dimmed still further thanks to the Great Depression's deadly stranglehold. Alcan had, however, some gilt-edged assets: its employees, men and women of talent, loyalty and above all industry, led by a team cast from the same mold and headed by that brilliant entrepreneur-scholar, Edward K. Davis. (This) is the story of these people and their company. Through a blend of skill, far sightedness, luck and plain hard work they made Alcan what it is today: a world leader in the aluminum industry. From its modest birth through its precarious infancy they nurtured its growth into the giant Canadian multinational enterprise now recognized around the world, thereby realizing that dream of a a global mission which had inspired its founders." London Turnstone 1973 0855000058 / 9780855000059 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Good- Jacket design by Roy Tunnicliffe. Inscribed By Author
256 pp, 8 3/4" H. Inscribed on half title page: "To Suzanne / with best wishes from / Marion Campbell". "The old man knows death is near. He has travelled a long road since he was simply Drost, son of no man, the only child of Malda, the Middle Priestess. From the warmth of the consecrated Hearth he was taken with the King's son to undergo the cruel schooling of the priests of the New Way. From childhood his life had been ruled by his duty as the Dark Twin to share with the treacherous Ailill the onerous burden of kingship. He had been sustained by the wisdom of the Old Way during his trials at the hands of the priests, in the combat and dancing by which he proved his manhood, and through the web of intrigue pervading the lives of his people. But when the bitter time came for commitment to a princely marriage he felt only the pang of loss. For always, breaking through his dreams, there was someone for whom his whole being yearned - someone who was his other half from past time and for all time. Yssa. 'You'll wed young and widow young and it will be more of her making than yours,' said the Old One. And so it happened. Now Drost is about to die and urgency grips him. He must forge the chain of memory to link his spirit with the lost sould of Yssa. Each link must ring true if they are to find their way. Marion Campbell has woven the strands of this complex and moving saga with consummate skill. It is all there: the lore of ancient Britain, the layers of symbolic meaning, the experience of strength struggling against evil and secret knowledge. This love story as old as time will strike a resposive chord in everyone alive to the pervading reality of eternal myth." Some scattered tiny marks of silver ink from spine title on exterior of book - mainly on spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling with a few tiny chips and tears with creases, light scuffing and rubbing marks - mainly on spine and rear panel, light browning at top edge.
