"Credited with seventy-two victories, Canadian ace Billy Bishop ranked fourth among Allied and German aces of World War I. Long out of prin t, this aviation classic has been expanded with new photographs and updated by supplementary material on First World War planes and pilots....(Bishop, who received every British decoration of valor, including the Victoria Cross) was also a sk i l l f u l writer and 'Winged Warfare' vividly recreates those early days - both comic and tragic - when the deadly 'airborne jalopy' was getting its trial run. He describes the dank, slimy and boggy mud that soured him on land combat. And the w ri ti ng c ra ck l es when (he) relives flying his Nieuport Scout, armed with a single Lewis gun. It was in this tiny plane that he dodged the 'Archies' (German anti-aircraft batteries and outfought and outmaneuvered the scarlet-winged Fokkers flo wn by Bar on von Ri ch thofen's formidable squadron. Here, too, are the joys and terrors of daily dogfights, a life of extraordinary contrasts. Complete with a chronology of World War I, Bishop's confirmed victories, airplanes flown by Bishop in Wor ld War I, list s by co untry of Allied and enemy aces, and aircraft specifications and data." STORMS OF CONTROVERSY: THE SECRET AVRO ARROW FILES REVEALED. FOURTH EDITION, REVISED., Campagna, Palmiro. Foreword by Major-General (Retired) Richard Rohmer.

Toronto Dundurn 2010 1554886988 / 9781554886982 4th Edition, Revised. Soft Cover Near Fine
284 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "The development of the Avro Arrow supersonic fighter was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation in February 1959 prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the Central Intelligence Agency play in the scrapping of the project? Who in Canada's government was involved in that decision? What, if anything, did Canada get in return? Who ordered the blowtorching of all the prototypes? And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program? When (this book) was first published in 1992, its answers to these questions sent shock waves across the country. Using never-before-released documents, (it) exploded the myth that design flaws, cost overruns, or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow. Now, in this fully revised fourth edition, complete with two new appendices, the bestselling book bring readers up-to-date on the CF- 105 Arrow, the most innovative, sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s." 177 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(R)econstructs America's first era of manned flight and brings back to life the famous and less-known aviators who became the nation's heroes: Charles Lindberg, whose achievement was the great event of the 1920s - Amelia Earhart, one of the many women 'aces' (the aviation industry encouraged women because, as pilot Louise Thaden put it, 'If a woman can handle a plane, the public thinks it must be 'duck soup' for men.') - Calbraith P. Rogers, who made the first transcontinental flight, surviving a dozen crashes, a broken arm and collarbone, and a score of wounds caused by the metal fragments of an exploded engine - and many others. The book provides a vivid picture of America in the first half of the century - its aspirations and concerns - as expressed in the exuberant and often utopian response to a major new technology." Motorbooks, Osceola, WI, 1988, first edition.
128 pp, small 4to (10 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0879382864 "The enemies were numerous. The jungle heat and the broad sea, the North Vietnamese Air Force and their arch ace Colonel Tomb, the MiG-17s and MiG-21s. Points on the Ameri can side were our elite pilots, aircraft and weapons: the Thunderchiefs, Crusaders and, of course, Phantoms. The air battles of the Vietnam War were fierce; the victors earned their wings and the kill markings emblazoned on their planes. (Th i s b o o k) spotlights the duels between America's pilots and the MiGs in the skies over Southeast Asia. Most of all, this is a book about airplanes. Here are the Phantoms Colonel Robin Olds piloted to score four kills. The intrepid Skyhawk whi ch d o wn ed a MiG-17 with an unguided air-to-ground missile. And F-4 number 155880 which finally blew Hanoi's Colonel Tomb out of the sky, earning its pilot ace status. Here are the men and machines that flew Rolling Thunder and Linebacker I a nd II. Mil ita ry expert Robert F. Dorr has collected a superb gallery of glowing color photos - many of the contemporary - and written a detailed history, chock full of anecdotes." THE ARROW., Dow, James.
16 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1997 1550285548 / 9781550285543 Soft Cover Fine
166 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Here is the fascinating story of the rise and fall of the Arrow, the legendary interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe Canada in the fifties. The Arrow was an unprecedented success story for Canada's fledgling aviation industry. It was conceived by its builders as the culmination of an impressive string of world firsts. Faster than any previous aircraft, it represented the leading edge of technology and an achievement of the highest calibre. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time and which remains hard to fathom even today. The Diefenbaker government cancelled the Arrow, and everything was destroyed, including the planes themselves. Nothing was to remain. Working from official documents, archives, interviews and a wide range of unofficial sources, James Dow presents the authoritative story of A.V. Roe Canada and its projects. He describes how the Arrow was developed and why it was killed. Dow takes us behind the scenes to the real dynamics and rivalries which were a part of the Arrow from the beginning and which explain its fate. This edition of the definitive books on the subject has been updated with a new introduction."

THE ARROW., Dow, James.
17 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1979 0888622811 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter, which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer, built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success." Previous owner's place, date and signature in ink on front free endpaper; some light toning to endpapers and to edges of text block, very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, several small tears with creases at top edge, light edge wear, one small edge chip, protectedin a mylar sleeve.

Arms and Armour Press, (London, 1985).
72 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photos. "Valiant, Victor, Vulcan - names which conjure up visions of strange and graceful white shapes wheeling in the skies over Farnborough or thundering in groups of four from airfields in the east of England. They are listed here in alphabetical order, for, like the nation which ordered, built and operated them, I cannot decide quite which of them was the best. What is clear, with the hindsight bestowed after nearly thirty years of consistent service in the Royal Air Force, is that all three v-bombers were truly multi-role aircraft, capable of adaptation either in initial design or by subsequent reworking..." 20 Gillcrist, Paul T., Rear Admiral, USN (Ret.) FEET WET: REFLECTIONS OF A CARRIER PILOT.
Novato, CA Presidio 1990 Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
348 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, drawings/diagrams. "Paul Gillcrist was a navy carrier pilot for almost thirty years, from the early days of flying propeller planes from straight-deck carriers, to the days of hig h-tech, lethal 'teen' jets and supercarriers. In his remarkable career - from 'nugget', to competent jet aviatior, to test pilot, to Vietnam fighter pilot, to air wing commander, to head of 'Fightertown USA', Gillcrist flew the F-8 Crusader, F-4 Phantom, F-14 Tomcat, and a myriad of other carrier aircraft. He took part in the Navy's transition to jet aircraft, when accident rates were high and many feared that jets would not be able to operate in the harsh, demanding environment of 'blue water ops'. (He) saw the introduction of critical innovations - the angled deck, steam catapult, optical landing system - that saved carrier jet aviation from extinction. Few aviatiors have had such varied and fascinating experiences; and few could write about them with such eloquence." Two tiny corner bumps, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny/small foxing marks on endpapers - mainly rear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few minor scuffs,an area of foxing on inside of rear panel.
