Oxford University Press / Institute of Race Relations, London, 1967, first edition.
338 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "As a result of the dramatic Unilateral Declaration of Independence by Ian Smith and his Cabinet in November 1965, Rhodesia is now the centre of an international crisis, a focal point in a rapidly changing scene. But the act should not be seen as an isolated incident; it is part of a political and constitutional pattern which has developed gradually, and of which the outstanding feature is the division between Europeans and Africans. In thi s careful and thorough study Mr. Barber traces the various strands which make up this pattern, analysing the origins of this tragically divided society and its relations with the rest of Southern Africa, and giving a detailed account of the politi c a l developments since 1960 which culminated in the U.D.I." LAKONIA., Bond, Geoffrey.
5 Bond, Geoffrey. LAKONIA.
Oldbourne, London, 1966, first edition.
200 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, frontispiece. "During the evening of 19 December 1963 the twin-screw Motor Ship 'Lakonia' slid through the grey waters of the Solent, bound for sunshine and warmer seas. Her hull and superstructure gleamed like 'a newly iced Christmas cake, for she had been recently overhauled and completely redecorated'. (651) passengers were aboard the liner for her Christmas cruise --- The 'Lakonia' began to burn on Sunday, 22 Decem b e r . Four days later she was a pitiful, smoke-grimed wreck, wallowing at the mercy of the waves. On Sunday, 29 December - just a week after the initial diaster - she slid beneath the waters of the North Atlantic to her last resting-place. (Th is ) is t he story of unfortunate, originally minor circumstances, slowly building up until they finally overwhelmed the ship, her crew and passengers. But the pattern of crew and passenger heroism is at least as great as that of any perhaps more dra ma tic di saster. Reluctant to leave the ship, the crew - and many passengers - tried desperately to overcome events and save her. There was no panic - from first to last. Air-sea-rescue, radio, telephone, and computers went into action to s ave tho se i n pe ril on the sea - and it was the first time that the system of A.M.V.E.R. (Atlantic Merchant Vessel Emergency Report), had been used in any major shipping disaster. Ships of all nationalities sped towards the stricken liner. The B riti sh f reigh ter ' Montcalm', the Argentine 'Salta', the Pakistani 'Mehi' - and then there was the ship that passed 'Lakonia' by in her hour of need ---. (This) is a graphic account of the strength and bravery of ordinary persons under threat of deat h. I t is a n open , objective and factual reconstruction of what happened." Wrinkling at bottom of spine, light browning on top of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny edge tears, ver y ligh t rubb ing. 12 Damrosch, Leopold, Jr. GOD'S PLOT & MAN'S STORIES: STUDIES IN THE FICTIONAL IMAGINATION FROM MILTON TO FIELDING.
University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1985, first edition.
343 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0226135799 "Combining literary criticsm with psychology, sociology, and the history of ideas, (this book) offers a fresh approach to the often-asserted connection between Puritanism and the rise of the English novel. Its premise is that the Christian myth, far from serving as a simple, unified background to fiction, was paradoxical and full of potential conflicts, and that these were particularly vivid in the Puritan ima g i n a t i o n . The extraordinary power of Puritan psychology rests in the control it granted Providence over the individual. Yet as a basis for fiction, Puritanism confronted a paradox that is the central theme of Damrosch's study - the tensio n be tw ee n fi ct io ns that confess themselves to be fictional and the Puritan faith in human life as a narrative invented by God....Damrosch holds that the eighteenth-century novel was preeminently a novel of ideas, not simply illustrating or al lu din g t o i de as but te sti ng them and fighting with them. As such, individual masterpieces found unique solutions to shared cultural problems. They demand to be understood from within, even while an attempt is made to trace their historical de velo pmen t. Acc ord ingl y, D amro sch examines a series of major works in detail. After surveying Puritan ideas about the self, time, and language, he considers two very different modes of Puritan narrative: Milton's 'Paradise Lost' and Bunya n's autob iogra phy and all egori es. Damro sch then explores the transition to secular narrative in eloquent discussions of Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe', Richardson's 'Clarissa', and Fielding's 'Tom Jones'. A glance at Sterne's 'Tristram Shandy' co nclu des th e book , wi th re flect ions o n th e futu re of the novel in an age when providential pattern could no longer be asserted as synonymous with literary design." 1" faint line indentation on fore-edge of textblock. The majority of the eighteen poets represented in th is anthology were natives of the state of Shu, in what is now Szechuan Province, during this turbulent period. 'Among the Flowers' marks the emergence of a new and subsequently very influential genre in Chinese poetry, the lyric tz'u. For m a l l y , t h e tz'u is a text set to a musical compostion; thematically, the tz'u is a poetry of sensuous appeal. The 'flowers' of the title are the courtesans and singing girls who are the center of interest in this poetic world. THE BIG PUSH: A PORTRAIT OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME., Gardner, Brian.
20 Gardner, Brian. THE BIG PUSH: A PORTRAIT OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME.
Cassell, London, 1961, first edition.
177 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "At half past seven on the morning of the first of July 1916, along a front extending for eighteen miles in the valley of the Somme, an intensive bombardment which had conti nued since dawn lifted, and fourteen divisions of British troops stumbled out of their trenches to attack the enemy. This was the climax of Sir Douglas Haig's carefully conceived plan to break the interminable deadlock of trench warfare on th e W e s t ern Front, and score a resounding and dramatic victory over the German forces. Haig's design foundered within a few hours among the defences of Fricourt, La Boisells, and Thiepval, at the appalling cost of twenty thousand British soldier s k il le d an d thirty-five thousand wounded. - But the official dates for The Battle of the Somme are from 1st July to 18th, November 1916. The 'Big Push' went on, the preliminary bombardments, the attacks, the horrifying slaughter - every single c as ual ty be ing measured in terms of individual pain, misery, and sacrifice. Belief in the High Command that prolonged shelling must reduce an entrenched enemy to inertia and impotence, easy prey for advancing infantry, died hard. It persiste d t hro ugho ut the aut umn and into the following year, when the same ghastly pattern was repeated at Passchendaele. It was not fully discredited till the full potential of armoured vehicles was realized and military concepts, bred in minor theat res of w ar be for e th e tur n of the century, were rejected. - (This book) provides a critical, and immensely readable analysis of the policy, planning, and action of the British and French armies at the Battle of the Somme, a battle in which the cas ualti es of the Briti sh arm y alone exceeded those suffered by it during the whole of the Second World War. An important historical account of a great military blunder, it is also a vivid portrait of the tragedy, the unspeakable horror, and t he co urage, which are commo n to an y war at any time, but which were peculiarly intensified in France and Flanders from 1914 to 1918." Book is lightly cocked, has light edge wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners, light wrinkling at top/bo ttom o f spine , light brow ning on edges o f text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has moderate edge wear, tiny chips/tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light soiling at top/bottom edges, two scuffs on rear panel, old tape on inside of top/ bottom o f spin e.
