ARMISTICE 1918., Barclay, C.N., Brigadier.
2 Barclay, C.N., Brigadier. ARMISTICE 1918.
A.S. Barnes, New York, (1969).
155 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "After more than four years of the most fearful war in the world's history, the end came almost unexpectedly, with dramatic suddenness. At five o'clock on the morning of November 11, 1918, Marshal Foch and Admiral Wemyss, representing the Allies, concluded an armistice with German civil and military representatives. There had been a general expectation that the war would last well into 1919. The author...examines the various factors that led to the earlier conclusion of the war. He analyzes conditions in the summer of 1918 following Ludendorff's massive offensive in March...also probes the plans of the Central Powers, the Allies, and the American Expeditionary Forces, emphasizing the range of disagreements on the methods by which German could be defeated. He then goes on to consider the first and second phases of the Allied offensives of August 1918, which at last cracked German resistance. Finally the Armistice itself is studied in detail. The penultimate chapter, which comments on military operations, includes the bizarre account of the Kaiser's unheralded arrival in Holland..." Tiny marks and faint ghost marks on endpapers from old tape (removed), thin ink line smudge on page 117, a few pages with soft or full corner creases, slight bubbling to front pastedown. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, some faint writing indentations on front panel, two small closed tears. VG-/VG

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ROYAL FLYING CORPS IN WORLD WAR I., Barker, Ralph.
3 Barker, Ralph. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ROYAL FLYING CORPS IN WORLD WAR I.
Robinson, London, (2002), reprint.
507 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), soft cover. B&w photos. ISBN 1841194700 "...the compelling story of the vital role played by the pioneer pilots and observers of the Royal Flying Corps who served their apprenticeships in the unforgiving skies of Wor ld War I. The RFC took part in all the major battles from Mons to the Somme, from Bloody April 1917, when the airmen suffered enormous casualties, through Third Ypres and Passchendaele, up to the chaotic retreat from Ludendorff's offensive and o n t o the threshold of victory. Drawing from letters and diaries of the men who took part, Ralph Barker successfully recreates an overview of the battlegrounds from the menacing skies above France and brings fresh off the pages the exhilaration of a e ri al combat in the little open-cockpit biplanes. Risking their lives for their country, suffering the strain of low-level flying, the debility of the 'shakes', and the ever-present fear that they would not return from a mission, these brave y oun g men nevertheless enjoyed comradeship and a true sense of bonding, between pilots and ground mechanics, observers and gunners." IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918., Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett.
4 Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett. IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918.
Leo Cooper, London, 1994, revised edition.
159 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850523184 B&w photographs, diagram, map. "Philip Bartlett's account is a unique and fascinating record of a pilot's life in the dawn of aerial warfare and, as a history, of the first use of the bomber in war, strangely, by the Navy's aircraft. Flying by day and night alone, without navigational aids, the author moves from attacks on the U-boat bases to bombing the German Gothas as they prepared to raid London, and then to the s upport of Haig's drive to the coast which ended in the mud of Passchendaele. The climax in March, 1918, is reached when the author's squadron finds itself directly in the path of Ludendorff's massive thrust, which broke the British Vth Ar m y a n d n e a rly decided the War. Attacked by Richthofen's aces, No 5 Squadron RNAS flew continuous desperate missions against the advancing troops from aerodromes which were over-run time after time. At a time when the life of a pilot was re ck on e d in w e ek s, t he author flew 101 missions, enduring the rigours of flying without heat or oxygen, with hesitant engines, no parachutes and the attention of German fighters. Yet there is continual evidence of the pure joy of flying and won der a t the sh ee r b eau ty of the sky." Light browning to top edge of textblock, slight waviness to top/bottom edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top edge. Very Good+/Very Good

London Hodder & Stoughton 1988 0340263792 / 9780340263792 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
277 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs. "(T)he story of air operations during the First World War, 1914-1918, mainly on the Western Front. It was only eleven years after the Wright Brothers' first flight that the Royal Flying Corps set off for France and every aspect of air-fighting had to be discovered for the first time. Richard Townshend Bickers gives a fresh and challenging view of the men involved, their aircraft and the conditions of war. The pilots and observers of all the combatant nations tended to be young courageous individuals, filled with a love of flying and of adventure. Their aircraft were fragile and unreliable and casualties were appallingly heavy. It was a period of great technical advances when aerial warfare and tactical teamwork were transformed. (The author gives an account of) Lieutenant General Sir David Henderson's leading role in the formation and development of the Royal Flying Corps (and while not neglecting the 'aces', he) also gives due recognition to the less famous pilots, to the usually overlooked air observers and gunners who flew in two-seater fighters, and to the crews who carried out the less glamorous but equally important reconnaissance and bombing sorties." 12 Bowyer, Chaz. BOMBER BARONS.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.

392 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0330376721 B&w plates. "1918 was probably the most dramatic and decisive year in British military history. In the spring there was a fear that Britain might have to evacuate her troops from the continent and lo se the war. In the summer came the great turnaround, and by autumn the German armies began to retreat. In November 1918 the First World War was over. This book tells the story of an amazing year through the authentic voice of the British s o l d i e r , a year in which, remarkably, the casualty rates were even higher than those of 1916 and 1917, the years of the Somme and Passchendaele." University of Florida, Gainesville, 1975.
152 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0813003520 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Until the Second Seminole War the United States Navy had generally employed the Federalist doctrine (cruiser-commerce-raiding), but the un iqueness of this Indian conflict caused the navy to adopt a new offensive strategy. For the first time in history the American Navy was pitted against a nonmaritime foe. There were no single merchantmen to attack; there were no cruisers t o e n g a g e in single-ship combat; there were no enemy fleets to be repelled from the nation's harbors. Instead, there were Indians practicing guerilla tactics in a watery environment - the Everglades of Florida. Athough it was not apparent at t h e be gi nn in g o f the war, the navy's only hope for victory lay in the development of a strategy for riverine warfare. It was a kind of warfare that demanded specially trained combat groups, organized for sustained land/sea operations. I t r equ ir ed jo int ac tio n wi th the army. It called for a naval command familiar with setting up and directing complex operations and diverse forces to achieve an overall objective. In developing a strategy of riverine warfare, United States Nav y po lic y e volv ed f rom a de fe nsi ve to an offensive position, from a society of highly individualistic and inflexible sea captains into a well-meshed cooperative unit capable of working not only alone but also with the army. Between 1835 and 1842, the nav y cam e of age. Her e i s a dramatic account of that vital time, enhanced by an awesome setting, which will engage and enlighten both the scholar of naval history and the armchair sailor." Jim is the designer of the functional buoys and master of the course". "Into the Water Barrier" is "the personal story of Donald Campbell, only son of the late Sir Malcolm Campbell. It tells how Donald suddenly determined to try to improve his father's world water speed record of 141.74 m.p.h. for Britain when he heard of an American challenge. Dundurn, Toronto, 2004, first edition.
318 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550025120 "This is (the story of Deward Barnes, a Canadian soldier of WWI), in his words, written as the events of the Great War were unfolding. Illustrated with Deward's sketches and contemporary photos, (it) takes us into the mind of this ordinary Canadian soldier, trapped in a world in which he had to pay a terrible price in order to survive. In 1917, Deward was assigned to the firing squad that was to take the life of Pr i v a te Harold Lodge, who had been convicted of desertion by a court martial. Lodge was one of 23 Canadians executed during the war by their own brothers at arms. It was an experience that changed Deward forever. Bruce Cane has provided valuable i ns ig hts into Deward's words by juxtaposing (them) with the official accounts of these events, along with other first-hand accounts from the period, in order to capture the nuance of each of his entries. Deward Barnes' diary takes us into the t ren che s a nd firing lines of the Western Front like no other first-hand Canadian account before. Deward's is the voice of the Canadian soldier, Everyman in khaki, the men who today lie in their graves in the fields of Flanders and Picardy." Chri stma s no tati on, place, date and signature in pencil on free front endpaper; light wrinkling at bottom of spine.
