Toronto CANAV 1987 0969070381 / 9780969070382 1st Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
144 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The late 1930s was a time of restlessness for many young Canadians. For some, nothing short of a trip to England and a visit to the RAF recruiter could satisfy their urge for adventure. One who followed this path was Vernon C. Woodward, a British Columbian from Victoria. (This book traces Woodward's) flying career fromTiger Moths in Scotland, then on to advanced training and out to pre-war Egypt to his first posting. (When war breaks out) the young pilots are flung against a seemingly overwhelming enemy. They do their best, flying their little biplane Gladiators. Woody records his first kill as the pace of combat accelerates daily. Soon Woody's squadron is called to Greece to face even harsher odds with an onslaught of Messerschmitts and Junkers. Woody's tally of kills grows steadily, as does that of many of his mates, but one by one he is losing his friends as the unequal struggle continues. Inevitably the British must withdraw. They make their last stand on Crete, where the situtation is hopeless from the start. Soon there is not a single airworthy Hurricane and Woody and his fellow airmen must take rifle and Tommy gun in hand to fight rugged German parachutists at close quarters. In the end, the British forces made a humilitating retreat to Egypt, where Woody again faces the enemy and records his 20th and final kill, making him one of Canada's leading aces of either world war." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear to boards, large dog-ear corner crease on page leaf 19/20 and page leaf 99/100. JANE'S POCKET BOOK OF MILITARY TRANSPORT AND TRAINING AIRCRAFT., Taylor, Michael J.H. and Munson, Kenneth, compilers. Edited by John W.R. Taylor.
17 Taylor, Michael J.H. and Munson, Kenneth, compilers. Edited by John W.R. Taylor. JANE'S POCKET BOOK OF MILITARY TRANSPORT AND TRAINING AIRCRAFT.
Collier, New York, 1976, second printing.
262 pp, oblong 4 1/4" H x 7" D, soft cover. Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs and 3-view drawings. "Many times in the three decades that have followed the Second World War, military transport aircraft have demonstrated that they can pr event wars, or wage war, as effectively as the more aggressive categories of combat aircraft. As long ago as 1948-9, the freight-carrying transports of America, Britain and France averted a third World War by keeping West Berlin alive in the f i r s t great confrontation of the 'cold war' which we remember as the Berlin Air Lift. At Suez and in Vietnam, the transports flew wingtip-to-wingtip with the fighters and bombers, air-dropping men and supplies, and performing entirely new tas k s wh en f it t ed with electronic counter-measures equipment or heavy gunship armament. In Czechoslovakia in 1968, transport squadrons of the Soviet Air Force sent a shudder down the spines of Western strategists by demonstrating how quickly and e ff ici ent ly the y could set down an army of occupation, to smother a threatened rebellion, by night. There is little need to emphasise the part that sound training plays in such operations. But training aircraft no less than transport aircraf t a nd heli copt ers , ar e often adapted for more militant duties nowadays. Such a concept dates back at least as far as the Battle of Britain, when Tiger Moths and Harvards suddenly sprouted small bombs in defence of the United Kingdom. Today, s ome jet trai ners can lift a weight of bombs, rockets, guns and other weapons that would not have disgraced a first-line bomber of 1940. These are the kind of aircraft found in (this book)." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership m arks . E xterio r - v ery minor e dge wear. Very Good+

Boston Houghton Mifflin 1998 0395898714 / 9780395898710 Book Club Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good J.R.R. Tolkien.
106 pp, 8 3/4" H. Five illustrations by Tolkien (3 colour, 2 b&w). "To console and distract (his young son who had lost his favorite toy dog), J.R.R. Tolkien improvised a story - the story of Rover, a real dog magically transformed into a toy, who, after many fantastic adventures in search of the wizard who wronged him, at last wins back his doggy life. This charming tale, peopled by a terrible dragon and a wise old whale, by the king of the sea and the Man-in-the-Moon, was a Tolkien family favorite and went through several typewritten drafts over the years. Now, more than seventy years after it was written, the story of Rover - or, as the Man-in-the-Moon fondly called him, Roverandom - is published at last. Rich in wit and wordplay, crowded with thrilling and humorous incident, (it) will delight not only Tolkien's countless admirers but anyone who loves a rollicking yarn well told." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny wrinkle at top of spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling and a tiny chip at bottom of rear flap-fold - minor edge wrinkling elsewhere, soft crease at top of front flap.
